This is my first experience of Steam.

I despise it. Actually, 'despise' isn't strong enough but right now I cannot think of anything stronger that wouldn't melt the FH server by posting it.

Its a bug ridden slug of a piece of programming. Amongst the many things it has failed at - 96GB free on installation drive... "There is not enough disk space for Steam to run".

I've got it to reluctantly install. Making it a requirement before you can install a game is insane-making if you don't intend to play online or if an internet connection is not available at the time of installation of the game.

For the first time ever I advocate people to get a pirate copy of a game and install it. Buy the shrink-wrapped version and leave it in the box unless you intend to play online.

Goddamn awful piece of programming.

I've heard that you cannot install the game without an internet connection, puts me off instantly.

Also, before I go Google, what DRM is present in the game?

I don't know about DRM but it does require you to have Games for Windows Live and Steam

I've played the game now for maybe 10 minutes. It seems rather good. However, I'm finding the whole Steam client thing so aggravating I may just uninstall it.

This is *the* worst game client install I've ever dealt with bar none. I've installed it on 2 machines now. One took maybe 6 hours to install, the other ran first time.

Steam tries to update every time you run it and you have to sit twiddling your thumbs waiting for it to time out if you are not currently running with an internet connection, say on a laptop with wireless disabled.

The wargear bonus stuff is painful but by entering yet more codes you can get it downloaded.

This is the kind of frustration that makes me very wary of any THQ games in future and I certainly won't have anything to do with Steam.

Note to the devs: The game was cracked and available for download 3 days before the full release of the game making a laughing stock of any security. Save yourselves the time and keep wank code like this away from people that buy it legitimately.]

EDIT: Oh and another thing - unless you store your ID and password locally you cannot play the game offline, which creates a security issue.

I have to second Roo really. The install process is a pain in the ass. You have to install Steam, then download the patch (which took ages), then sign up for Windows Live (which somehow seems to divert you to Xbox live leading you to enter redeem codes into Xbox live and have them not recognised) before you can even start playing the game! It's simply not acceptable that it takes an hour until you can start playing.

Regarding the game I'm not impressed so far. The graphics seem sub-Dawn of War rather than in any way superior. I like aspects of the experience system so far but it needs more play before I can comment further. One thing is certain it is not Dawn of War 2 - Rather it's another game which just happens to share some similarities with Dawn of War.

Loving DOW2 at the moment, not that far through it yet but loving the SP.

Looks like you are having major issues with Steam, I had those Issues when Steam first came out and was annoyed that I had to have it installed to play HL2 when it came out, but its pretty stable now and the community services it provides are brillant, but mind you if you don't play MP very often its not very useful, the Pricing of the games ranges from decent prices to 'how the hell can you justify that amount of money when the physical copy is cheaper' For games like TF2 and L4D its best service around.

You can't blame steam for Windows live being crap...

The game launches after a couple of seconds for me, unless there's a patch in which case it'll download it automatically - saving me the bother of having to trawl the net for patches.

Playing it co-op that last couple of days, really good fun! Allows you to micromanage your squads a lot more since you only get 2 each

I'm surprised there are people that have not used steam yet. Steam is a success, aand it works fine. Offline mode is there, people moaning about security issues is a bit silly. If it is your computer and others use it, then simply install it under your user account??

Steam does take a while to install and update, but its servers are very fast, and it works wonders when running. The majority of my games are bought and used via steam. Great community features, and very easy to use etc.

Roo, if you use it for a while you will see. The issue with DOW2 is that it tries to use Windows Live and Steam in conjucntion. This is the most retarted decision ever. Steam has all the features of windows live built in, it just complicates matters.

Aye this is a really odd choice. I like it, but I can see why it would annoy some people. I've played the first few missions now and I'm rather impressed how slick the gameplay generally is. It reminds me more of Icewind Dale or Dungeon Siege rather than DoW 1.

and playing it more wont make it any better. tbh its the worst piece of shit i've played in years. this game has fuck all to do with Dawn of war.

it doesent even feel like a natural evolution of the game.

By fuck all I take it you don't feel the backstory, setting or characters have got anything to do with DoW or that apart from the lack of base building the gameplay bears no resemblence to DoW?

I don't know if it was here or another forum but I agree with them that its closer to WH40k than DOW1 ever was, WH40K stories tend to be about a select few 'heroes' that you follow through the storyline, whilst the base-building aspect was good and at first I was put off by the fact relic removed it from the SP but after playing for a few mins I agree it is for the better. I also enjoy the MP side with Co-op and the base-building. The only downside is that the Story isn't as good as previous relic games such as Homeworld, COH or DOW1, but it still hits the mark. TBH I love anything that moves the WH40K fluff forward even a little bit.

dow 1 was a RTS with a warhammer paint job

dow 2 is much closer to what its based on. it is a much more tactical game in SP mode. its not majorly hard, until the end bits, but you cant just turtle/tech/spam/win like you could in DOW1 or most other RTS franchises.

the MP is good aswell and also different, you have to expand and fight, you cant hide/tech/spam/win as usual which is why a lot of poeple dont like it

if you dont like the way they made it, thats your perogative, but saying its shit is a bit subjective ;)

It's a marmite game.

What I find odd is that people are moaning it is not like dow 1. Usually we moan about sequels not being different, not breaking new ground. We had 3 expansions to dow 1, making dow 2 the same with shinier graphics would have been a piss take. While it may not appeal to everyone, it is a development and a move forward. The designers clearly said they wanted to move away from base building and focus on the combat and squad elements. Why it is a suprise to everyone now that is out is a mystery.

Aye, in many ways its a really brave thing to do.

None of my issues have been with the game itself, only with the software wrapped around it.

Has anyone played this for the 360? My PC is junk and won't run this, and I have my 360 sitting there. It pains me, it really does, to suggest playing an RTS of this caliber on a console - but nevertheless, has anyone?

but most of the fun for me where the massive battles you could have even in single player.

when i first heard of this game and read up about it it felt so massive, but now that i'm playing it it just feels like a 10 ton bazooka thats shooting peas.

So your main complaint is "it's different" ?

All the previews I've read for months prior to it's release were very clear that it was a smaller scale, more tactical game with RPG elements. The good news is if you want large scale strategy games you've got loads to choose from already.

<3 Supcom

P.S Finished the campaign on Coop last night, good fun :)
