It's the "Test to Release" scheme, where you can pay to take a private test in order to end your quarantine early. France is on the amber list but is currently extra special (because the UK government apparently doesn't understand that the island of Reunion is a region of France but one that's over 9000 km away from the French mainland), it's anticipated that it'll become a normal amber list country by the time he travels.

@Gwadien gambling and going abroad?

test in school were those lateral flow things not worth the plastic they made from. Tests for travel require lab checked samples.

@Tom @Bodhi any help dudes?
Where you going dude?

My sister's asked us to come out to Spain (she's got a place south of Malaga) but we gave it a miss. Got a couple of weeks off and there's no way we wanted to risk having to self-isolate in Spain for ten days. If we get covid and have to self isolate then being at home would feel like being on holiday anyway :)

Poland, for a wedding.

I'm not here to defend myself, I'm here to ask for advice :)

Wish I could chap but sadly haven't been abroad for about 15 months now - and yes, it is killing me. However the consensus I've heard from people who have is that yes, they are a rip off.

Don't the rules change in a couple of weeks so they aren't required? Or is that only travelling back from Amber List countries without quarantine?

So you don't have to quarantine if you're double vaccinated but you have to do a test on your second day back.

Poland; you don't have to do anything if you're double vaccinated.

Our approach also seems more... hostile than Poland - you have to fill out a form to travel pretty much everywhere, but the wording from our Government is 'You may be denied entry if you don't fill one out!' whereas the Polskis are like 'just do it on the plane'

If you're double-vaccinated you only need the day 2 test if returning from an amber country. Just buy the cheapest one there is. I'm not convinced the results are even reported back to the government. All you need to do is put an order number on the passenger locater form that you complete before you fly. That's it.

Polish girl who works for me describes covid in poland like this: "a shitshow".

Isn't their idiot right wing government one rung higher up than us in the "did a shit job" ladder?

They seem to be doing alright, but I guess they haven't had the delta variant.

Yeah, that's actually a bit of a concern, thankfully I've got accommodation pretty much sorted so even if they suddenly go red then it's only £180 down.

Those graphs mean nothing unless you have population and population density in to account. Also what the vaccination rate is.

Sorry but those charts do not need population for you to be able to see that in Poland there is very low transmission and in the UK it is a bit higher - in raw numbers... sure pop density matters when looking at how quickly something spreads but in this instance Gwad has a higher chance of spreading Covid to someone in Poland than vice versa...

What those graphs say to me is that they haven't had a delta outbreak yet which means they could and could go to a red list country, even though it's worse here.

Which makes 0 sense.

Case and point @Moriath COP26: Government defends Alok Sharma over quarantine-free travel

Plus I'd love to see how much the Tories have encouraged private jet travel throughout the pandemic.

Not just the Tories doing that in fairness.

Slightly concerned we're heading for a world where only the rich and powerful can get on a plane, which would be massively regressive imo. Not only does travel broaden the mind and give people some awesome experiences, but will also result in many separated families (considering how interconnected we all are, globally), and poverty in nations that relied on Tourism.

The EU facilitating tax cuts for the super rich and Amazon, who would have thunk it?

Difference is that the Tories have setup a system that doesn't make sense, that favours the rich during covid.

Are people using private jets having the follow the same rules as us plebs? Doubt it.

Government is by the rich, for the rich. But you're resistent on any action that would counteract that. So you kinda shoot yourself in the foot really.

Funnily enough I entirely disagree. In this particular example the increase in prices and widening inequality is being driven by Climate policy, which as you know I don't entirely agree with, and it will have far more wide ranging effects on the less well off - increased heating bills, more expensive transport, more expensive food etc etc. The "Ultra Rich" also creamed it in during lockdowns, whilst SME's were flattened and the working classes still had to go to work to keep the comfortably off in stock of food and Amazon deliveries - another policy I vehemently disagreed with.

In fact I think the only action I've been resistant to is increasing taxes on that bracket - which would be great in an ideal world. However in the real world we inhabit, we'd just be putting more taxes on the people most able to get round them, or pass them on to other people (their customers usually).

Pragmatism not idealism, as Radiohead once said in that song on OK Computer that most people skipped.

A mate of mine admitted a couple of weeks ago that he hadn't had his vaccine yet. I asked why, he stated that he'd already had COVID so didn't see the benefit.

My response?

"Ah OK then. You coming the pub?".

Amazing how you can make medical decisions without casting people out from society innit.
