I don't think so tbh, most people will who care will have already heard about it and donated. It is described really badly by MJ so I doubt it will pick up many donations from people who have not played DAOC.

It might struggle!

It's single redeeming feature is that it is trying to be DAOC 2, there is a whole stack of reasons why it could be terrible, mostly described by MJ.

You'd love it if the game didn't hit it's goal wouldn't you?

Actually I would be interested to see what he can come up with. Whether he actually has changed like he says or whether he is still the clueless douchebag who doesn't know what to do when the talent leaves that he was in the DAOC, WAR days.

Well he's going the right way in my opinion with RVR only and no PVE that cuts the class balance issues down a lot, the guy doesn't actually have to do a lot, he know's what worked in DAOC and he knows what didn't.

I hope they can reach the $2m. I've got the feeling it will reach about $1.5m but will go ahead with it anyway. Can they actually do that? Or do they have to reach their target?

They said if it does not reach 2mill then it will not be developed.

This probably gives them an idea of how much of a playerbase they have, The people here who said it might not make it could be right, it's a very niche game.

sad thing is, regardless of how "good" this is, or could be, IF it fails, it will be held up as a warning "dont try to innovate, just make shit photopies of WoW and sell that instead"

thereby killing off MMOs

Or it could just mean, there is still plenty of room for a niche MMO, just don't make it so niche that nobody is interested.

Zero pve - fail
Random crit death "hilarity" - fail
Clichéd rock paper scissors class balance - fail
Mark "I'M NOT LISTENING NER NER NER" Jacobs being in charge - fail

A DAOC2 or similar could and should be great.

1 - no PvE - MMOs need plenty of people online plenty of the time, nobody wants empty servers. When people want a break from the PvP they will have to log off, there wont be anything else for them to do. No kicking back smacking a few mobs and having a laugh with guildies late into the night.

2 - Random crits - it's supposed to be hardcore, if I spend ages getting my toon ready for pvp I will be mighty pissed off if I lose because of some stupid crit system that causes me to fall on my own sword or some shit (he wants this to happen according to an interview)

3 - Its a shit way to balance classes and was one of the worst things about DAOC mage > tank > stealther > mage. utter crap.

4. Come on, with such successes as TOA (like it or not it was the death strike for DAOC) WAR (was awful from the start) and by his own admission he has made big mistakes. When someone has been making nothing but mistakes for 10+ years it says a lot. He also likes to take credit for other peoples work, from listening to him you would think he single handedly created DAOC.

If you add PVE to a game that means an item grind and it only gets worse as the game goes on if any expansions/updates are released you are forced to keep up with everyone else and PVE to get the next best item = people not rvring= people eventually get fed up ala TOA. The Shrouded Isles PVE was tolerable but i never liked it, i was forced to do it or /quit, when TOA came out and i saw the mammoth PVE grind i had in front of me /quit happened and to this day i would love to see raw numbers in the months after TOA just to see how many people they alienated from the game. If he can add PVE with no item grind and still focus on the crafted only stuff then fine i guess.

Random Crits is fine but falling on my own sword sounds rather silly.

Class balance was a major issue in DAOC. Infiltrator given a ridiculous amount of spec points to spend and dragonfang the 9 second stun off evade which was utterly retarded.

We all make mistakes and he made 2 big ones with TOA and WAR, surely he should be allowed a 3rd chance? if he hasn't learned from his last 2 mistakes then this game will fall on it's arse and he knows that and he alone carries the pressure of his past mistakes.

Out of all the future MMO's to come this is the one MMO that is different from all the others, back it even if it's just a dollar.

actually i loved that all the factions had different classes and the way they worked, think its quite dull that in most modern MMOs they are the same across the board

and i thought WAR was one of the better mmos i have played recently, they actually tried something a bit different with most of the classes and PvE, melee healers, they way shamans worked, melee + range off hand, group quests areas (considering how much spunking was done over the heart quests in GW2 i am suprised that lots of people forget it had been done before, perhaps not as prettily :) )

where it failed for me was the fact that once you got to the end, you needed lots of people to achieve anything, and having lots of people in the same place killed the servers, so people quit in droves as they couldn't play at all (not even the way the game was supposed to allow you to play)

MMOs dont get the same amount of time to convince people anymore, DAoC europe had many many failings and flops (server crashes, items dissapearing, characters dissapearing, a hackers jaunt around emain) - but people stuck with it because tbh there was not that many other good MMOs out there, that has changed to an extent with WoW and the legions of other MMOs (many now Free to Play or Pay To Win :) )

so errr, to end my ramble the three top fails you mention are actually all things i like and hope for more of ;)

Agree with your points, WAR failed mostly because of the engine they used other than that the game was pretty good.

Just heard about CU 15 minutes ago and instantly had to check good ol FH.

Graphically i really do hope this will look more like daoc. I also hope that "smaller" things will be implemented like when someone hit/cast something on you, you get interrupted and that there will be real (AoE)CC abilities to handle the inevitable zergs and all the other good stuff.

Roaming pvp was and still is the most satisfying pvp i've ever played, you just need some tools to kill, CC or be able to gtfo fast.

I'm all for the no PVE at release, maybe add something like DF a bit later and you're set for success.
I'm fine with no RAs aslong as you keep the titles.

Still have a lot to read up on this project.

I know nothing will come close to the feeling of daoc in the early days but i also know a chance like this don't come every day so I'm willing to gamble a bit.

As for the pledge I'm leaning towards the $ 110 - Young Hero with alpha access, i do wonder though why the cheaper Young Hero compared to the $ 120 - Hero gives alpha access (instead of Beta) and 7% discount (instead of 5%) and 55 FPs (instead of 50), seems a bit wierd but maybe its because it's limited and Hero is not?

Will read up some more on this and pledge at the end of this month, maybe i get the urge for the $ 180 - Internal Testing one instead.

first you say it's bad that it won't have pve and next you say DAoC failed with ToA when they added a shitload of PVE. some people just can't be pleased i guess.

They added a shit load of terribly designed pve (which you can thank Mark Jacobs for btw). Current DAOC pve is probably just about right.

Like i said, first days usually call the kickstarter success. Looking doubtful and an MMO with 2mil? Heh, not gonna happen anyway.
