No excuses, 70 MPH is the speed limit and if someone breaks it then they deserve everything they get.

agree with speeders being losers.

I also think something should be done about the slow drivers.

You know the type - merge with the motorway at 47mph and move straight out into the middle lane.

Or (in my case) driving home through country roads and get stuck behind some cloth capped TWAT doing 30mph - you cant get passed them cos of the bends in the roads.

They cause a lot of the accidents cos they WILL NOT PULL OVER

Illegal things "most" of us have done at some point.

Had some kind of sex with a girl less than 16. (think back to when you were that age, if you need to)
Bought alcohol underage.
Bought cigarettes underage.
Taken some kind of street drug.
Can't be arsed thinking of more but there are lots more....

IF you can honestly say that you have NEVER broken the law in any way whatsoever I'll be very surprised.

Does goat-sex count if the goat is over 16 and consenting ? Maybe a little drunk tho...

I agree 100% with Scooba & Embattle etc - speed limits are there for a reason, you break them you don't deserve to drive. If you break the speed limit by more than 20mph I think that should be an automatic life ban.

Speed limits are based on 1 simple thing - stopping distances. Doesn't matter how good a driver you are, when you're in a residential area doing 50mph and some 5 yr old jumps out from behind a parked car then no force on earth will make your car stop faster than physically possible.

The excuses that really piss me off are:

"I'm a good driver, it's OK for me to break the speed limits". Fuck off and die before you kill someone else, thanks.

"I have to drive for my job, I do 1000's of miles a week, it's OK for me to break the speed limit cos it means I can get home to watch Buffy". Fuck off and die, it's part of your job, deal with it or change fucking job. I only drive a few miles but it's in rush hour traffic on over-full roads, if I drove over the fields and on the pavement I'd save hours.

Braking distances were calculated years ago though. Brakes have improved. Anyway, the argument about a 5 year old hardly applies in the places where I would speed, motorways and long straight-ish, country A-roads. I'm very careful in town/residential areas but I'll happily do 90 on a motorway if the conditions are right.

I have no qualms with someone speeding on the motorway. i pull in and let them past with a curt

"on you go you fuck wit"

only thing is, you dont normally here of these people hurt/killed all own there own. More often than not, they take someone else out too

"if the conditions are right"

I don't do 90 if everyone around me is doing 70. Not usless I have a clear lane between me and the next cars for a large dstance ahead so that noone can pull out without indicating when there id a large speed differential between us. In fact as a general rule, if the motorway is busy I'm pretty slow and calm. I'm not in a rush. If it's late at night and there are hardly any cars around then why the fuck would I do 70 though ? I really don't know anyone who would.

On a motorway, I think you should always drive at the same speed as everyone else.

If you drive a lot faster then you are a dangerous hazard and that also applies if you drive really slowly!

It's not my driving I fear, it's the mad cunts around me that really make me quite cautious. I've seen things on the road that nearly made me piss my pants: people speeding while the roads were iced over and I could feel my own car nearly losing it would be an example.

There's a difference between fast driving and aggressive driving. Even if I do feel someone is going too slow to have any business being in the outside lane I won't tailgate them or undertake them. I just shrug my shoulders and settle in behind them at a safe distance and hope they eventually realise that 65 is a bit of a piss-take.

Usually it's the queue of ppl tailgating ME that makes them realise though :/

An automatic life ban could possibly be the most stupidist thing to do.

How about this to reduce people hit by cars...

1. CROSS AT THE FUCKING CROSSINGS

The number of people I see who just jump into the road into on comming traffic then just casually walk across trying to display how l33t they are that they can standup against a car

2. THE ROAD IS NOT A PLAYGROUND

I'm always seing groups of people playing football in the road cos they think they can see when a car is coming or cricket is another popular middle of the road sport

While I agree its important for the driver to be aware of his surroundings and be a safe driver its also the job of Joe Public to be safe padestrians

I'm also surprised no ones mentioned the law Europe are trying to put through that if you are driving along and a cyclist pulls in front of you and you hit them its your fault no matter what, it was the drivers fault not the cyclist.

Goes back to work...

this is the case in holland. imo it's brilliant. of course I know that, as I live and drive here in holland, I'm very aware of cyclists and am used to dealing with them on the road.
The lions share of cycle paths here are clearly defined on, or are in fact laid off from the road.

This was news overhype, the actual proper context of this part of the 5th directive which is only being considered at the moment:

(i) Pedestrians and cyclists [Article 4(2)]

While pedestrians and cyclists may be the cause of some accidents, motor vehicles cause most accidents. Whoever is responsible for the accident, pedestrians and cyclists usually suffer more in accidents involving motor vehicles.

In case of an accident not caused by the driver, the situation of pedestrians and cyclists differs a good deal from one Member State to another. In some Member States no insurance cover is provided and the courts often try to establish driver liability in such a way as to permit inclusion of the victim within the motor
insurance cover. In other Member States the legislation provides that pedestrians and cyclists are covered by the insurance for the vehicle involved in the accident, irrespective of whether the driver is at fault, although the particular circumstances in which the civil liability of the pedestrian or cyclist is involved varies according to the national legislation.

As far as the Commission is aware, such inclusion of pedestrians and cyclists in some Member States’ legislation does not seem to have had a significant impact on the cost of the insurance.

The Fifth Directive will add a number of other things as well. Download the whole PDF(140KB) below

etc.

I think you demonstrate perfectly the root of the problem here PR - you and many other drivers view pedestrians/cyclists etc not as other human beings but as impediments to your right to drive as fast as you want. In actual fact they are simply other human beings who have just as much right to use the road as you do.

True fact: people will always do stupid things. Whether it's cross the road at a place other than a crossing without looking properly or sit in bathtubs full of baked beans for charity or let their children play near busy roads - it's always going to happen, nothing you can do about it. What you can do about it though is reduce traffic speeds so that when the inevitable happens the chances of death & injury are much much less. Doesn't take much of a reduction in speed to make a massive difference to death rates.

Same holds for motorways and non-residential areas - there will always be bad drivers, drivers who drive too slowly in the middle/outside lanes, drivers who don't use their mirrors before pulling out, drivers using mobile phones etc. Nothing you can do to change that. But you can do something to make the roads safer for everyone by slowing down yourself - traffic tends to all move at the same speed, if a few people slow down a little bit everyone else tends to slow down a bit too, it's a domino effect. And there's a big difference between a crash at 70mph and one at 90mph - at 70mph 2 or 3 cars might get involved, at 90mph the same crash could spill over the central reservation, into the oncoming fast lane, 10 or 20 cars could be involved - I'm just making those numbers up as an example, but you get my point I hope.

That's very very true and aggressive drivers are the worst, no question. But driving too fast does nothing except endanger otehrs and increase the risks of crashes and mutilations and deaths.

Jeez ladies get a grip.

If I'm doing 90 its because its safe to do so. If you knew the A50 you would understand. Inever tailgate, and always leave a good distance between me and the car in front. This distance varies depending on speed road conditions etc. I have no desire to run into the fuckwit doing 65 in the middle or outside lane. Surprisingly I have no desire to die, so I speed when it is safe. I prefer to call it "making progress", a police term.

There is currently an ad running on tele, kids runs out, guy locks up all brakes and splats aforementioned rugrat. It's Bollocks. First glaring error is he locks up the brakes, thus fucking up his braking distance. Secondly he takes forever to stop, on a dry road.

When I have been done for speeding its been on major A roads, never on a motorway, although stopped once and let off.

You plonkers that toodle to Safeways and back have no fucking clue how to drive on the motorways. We call you weekend drivers. Amongst other things. (I'm all in favour of a separate Mway driving test)

We each have skill sets, mine includes driving, both cars and bikes, without major incident for over 20 years. If you have a particular skill gained through training or experience I would respect that without question, even ask advice, as I often do in the Hardware forum. You should reciprocate and at least not have the arrogance to suggest that we are cap wearing Max Power sticker Corsa drivers.

I know the law is the law, and you don't hear me bitching about getting done. The law is due for a major overhaul though, as was pointed out earlier, cars have evolved, the law remains the same.

Rant over, time to skin up :)

Remembered this post by WPKenny. Perhaps makes more impact if you are a parent. It should make some form of impact if you are at least partially human

Jack took a long look at his speedo before slowing down: 55 in a 30 mph. The fourth time in as many months. How could he get caught so often?

When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the copper worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror.

The copper was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand. Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming speed ticket. A Christian copper, catching a bloke from his own church. A bloke who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at work. A bloke he was about to play golf with tomorrow. Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.

"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

"Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess so."

Bob seemed uncertain. Good. "I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit-just this once."

Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and yorkshires tonight. Know what I mean?"

"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in this area!!"

Ouch! This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics. "What'd you clock me at?"

"fifty five. Would you sit back in your car please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 40." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car."

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window.

The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license? Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand.

Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice. Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror.

Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Maybe even a ban!

Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jack,

Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it - a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters. All three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man.

A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left.

Bob
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.

Life is precious. Handle with care. This is an important message, please pass it along to your friends. Drive safely and carefully. Remember, cars are not the only things recalled by their maker.
