Buffy Finished.

No actually, you are so wrong.

Buffy is the television show most studied in today's literary circles. No other literature in the last 20 years has been studied in so much depth by Universities. You can buy tomes, hundreds of pages long, analyising every aspect of the show and not without good reason.

I used to be like you. I watched a few, out of order, out of context, and thought it was rubbish. Buffy the Vampire Slayer? What a silly idea...

The irony is that yes, it is a silly idea starring a girl with a silly name, but it's also the most genre-trancending show of, well, ever, mixing up horror, comedy, tragedy and drama like no other show ever will. Its emotional depth is unmatched (I dare you to watch "The Body" and not be reduced to a distressed mess) the dialogue is among the best on any show ever and it has defied convention at every turn, doing things that no other show has ever dared to. The character development is believable and gripping, the relationships between the characters is as well, and the long term arc plotting is unmatched. The acting is some of the best on tv, the fights piss on most big budget action movies and the storyline is predictable? Yes, right. Mmmmhmmm. Don't think so.

So, either watch the first two seasons, in order, and come back with your ill-founded views, or otherwise get the hell off this board eh?

The body is still my favourite episode.. along with S4Ep22, I forget the name now. But the dream one, fantastically well done.

Oh, and I have a mate at uni who DESPISED buffy. "blahblah shit script, blah blah pretty girl/phallic stake, blah blah crap characters".

Of course he hadn't watched much of it. So I got him to watch some of my dvds. He is now as big a fan as I.

Buffy's not for everyone, but it's not shit.

Restless - never seen dreams portrayed that effectively before...and when Giles starts singing...genius!

And the cheese man never was explained was he?

I don't think there was anything to explain, it was probably just a bit of a joke.

It was written very well, the stuff they said often came completely out of the blue leaving you thinking "what the hell did he just say and why?" much like real dreams (well, mine anyway).

You really cant be serious...can you? I dont know where your facts are from about it being the most studied in Uni. I bet its none of the respectable Uni's. I certainly wouldnt classify it as literature! Also the stuff about character development....

You reallt cant be serious about the fight scenes either...which film would you say is worse than buffy iro fight scenes??

I watched the first 5 ep of ser 1. There is no way in hell I could bring myself to watch any more of that drivel.

I also then watched a few from the later series and it had gotten worse!

I dont find the idea of a girl fighting vampires silly I just find the entire program to be completely silly

Yes, we're all wrong, and you, funnily enough the one who hasn't watched it properly, is correct.

I HAVE SEEN dozens of fights on BTVS which are far better than any action movie. The fact that you haven't doesn't mean they're not there, just that you haven't watched it.

Go on, go and watch your Stargate SG1 or whatever pap on TV you think is good.

And the character development is unsurpassed. You can't comment. You don't know what I'm talking about. Therefore your opinion is irrelevent.

I'm just giving my opinion...how can that be "correct" or "wrong" for that matter?

Give me a film as an example....

I think Stargate SG1 is just as good as Buffy....no wait that should that be as bad as...

A few, we'll define as about 4, to be generous.

So you've watched about 9 episodes all told, and you can classify yourself an authority on a 7 year long series?

Excellent reasoning there Dys, and here was me thinking that you were beginning to show some semblance of a working brain recently with some posts.

So what would you class as some of the better shows on TV at the minute?

You can't give an opinion unless you know what you're talking about. Simple as that. I'm not going to come on here on a board where everyone's raving about the new Matrix film and say "ha ha you're all stupid, it's rubbish...but I haven't actually seen it."

You cannot watch Buffy out of context. You've seen half of season 1 (which admittedly was not that great - it didn't take off until halfway through Season 2) and some other eps. You cannot judge the show which is that dependent on character development, and long story arcs by doing that. What's so frustrating is that I used to be you, 2 years ago my views were the same as yours. Then someone I trusted implored me to give it a proper go and I've never looked back.

I've noticed a curious trait w/r Buffy. More than any other programme, those people that don't like it feel the need to tell the entire world how shit it is. And they often have seen very few/no episodes. Dunno what it is about it that makes people so opinionated.

Anyway, the first series isn't really a reflection of the programme as a whole. Would you rate The Simpsons based on the first few episodes? Because they were fucking dire, but it went on to be 'the greatest social satire ever written'.

I've got a mate who will not give it the benefit of the doubt and constantly ridicules me for liking, nay loving the show(s). He makes me so mad!

He summed it up as "Buffy is eye candy for boys, Angel is eye candy for gay boys, and that's all the shows are."

I nearly broke his nose...for some reason people saying that kinda stuff winds me up more than it should! :)

If he doesn't see the attraction of Darla, Cordelia and Faith, he's clearly homosexual. Tell him so next time he feels the need to berate you.

I never said I was an Authority on the show. I feel I have given it more than enough of a chance to become interested in it...and I have not

I think its crap...and thats my opinion. You enjoy it and that your opinion.

I would rather watch "24" , Smallville, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Cold Feet, The Simpsons, C.S.I., The Sopranos, ER, Friends
I think they are all far better than Buffy...imo of course...as you have said I'm not an authority.

I feel the same need to say how shit it is that you feel the need to say how good it is.

If it takes you 1 and 1/2 seasons to get into a show it couldnt have been very good can it? And by that time you've grown accustomed to tha crap that any slight improvement on the show will make you think its superb.

I enjoyed watching the Simpsons ever since it was first aired on the Tracy Ullman Show. And have enjoyed 90% of all the episodes I have watched.

I can give an opinion on the things I have seen...and I know about that!

You still have not given me an example of a film where the fight scenes are better in Buffy....you obviously dont have one.

Well I watch, or have seen most of those series, and would denounce none of them as "crap", even though half of them aren't my cup of tea (EG: Cold Feet, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, ER, The West Wing).

Although it looks like you basically listed all the top contemporary US series (Bar CF) in a bid to avoid the "well AB&C is shit because of XY&Z etc" retort...

I would rather not watch any of them. I watch the sopranos as the dark humour appeals to me and I am a fan of 24.

But tbh buffy is poor. It's humourless and the acting is worse than abysmal. I know the same can be said for the likes of Elisha Cuthbert in 24 but that's my view.

Angel on the other hand. I watched some of the first series and found it quite enjoyble despite it's roots.

I think all of those are. Simple as that....I didnt name them to avoid a retort...

Alias is far superior too but I dont watch that as it doesnt appeal to me.

I can accept the remark about the acting, because one man's Brando is another man's, well, Brando. But humourless?

EH? :)

TBH it was very very funny most of the time when it wasn't being dramatic. Spike & Willow particularly.

You're maybe right Sar, I honestly haven't given it a chance.

Was never my cup of tea as it were.

I always felt it never left much to the imagination. Everything was always handed to you on a silver platter. I like to wonder at the end of a series.

Take it you don't/didn't like the Star Trek series then?

;)

The only thing I genuinely didn't like about Buffy towards the end (and I do like the show) was how kitsch it became. The biggest danger when overdoing the comedy side of things is that you trivialise the horror/drama, and as soon as you do that - any suspense or sense of danger/impending doom just disappears.

The first few seasons, in contrast, you actually felt like the residents of Sunnydale and the main cast were actually - shock horror - afraid of the demon cognoscenti. In the latter seasons you just felt as if by making quips and one-liners in the face of "certain death", it just made the whole horror premise fall flat on its face.

Ditto.

DS9 was boring, as was Voyager until 7 turned up to make it worth watching.
