Best tank in 1v1 fights? Hard to say, champs are pretty hard Mostly you move in grps where your job is more than just hitting people.
Sagba's guide to make a good tank
1. Dont gimp yourself by speccing to something stupid (like 50xbow, rest to slash, thrust and crush)
2. All Alb tanks should notice at least when they are exping at tanglers that you are not the one who win the fight. Keep casters alive.
This is enough to have good tank. No, this aint enough to be the best tank Here we go.
3. Find out what your enemy is like. Week in emain should be enough for this
Now you know that your most important job is to keep casters alive. When you have to attack, you know what enemys healers/casters look like(as those are your targets). Doing this you can say that you are the best
Hmmm... Did I forgot something? Hehe, skill... Well, I really dont think you need skill in this game. It wont take long when you can tell how fights will start and end and what your role will be in fights. Experience and skill is not the same thing. Just dont act like a idiot and you are fine. You can disagree on this, fine, I dont care really
Back to question, best tank in your realm. I will give you only one name and he will be person who do things I listed before(I think ). Here we go
1 word, slam. It cant be merc then(well, I dont know any shield specced mercs) And again, you play this game in grps. As there isnt anything that shield specced Arms can do better than shield specced pally, pally will win this with his chants. And the winner is: SoulFly Ok, I cant say that he is the best tank, more likely most active tank who do his job well(If you are a shield specced pally who protect casters, knows difference between warrior and healer and dont act like a idiot, you get my vote for the best tank)
Hard to name anyone from mids/hibs as I dont fight against tanks much and when I do, that tank have purged mess and heading to caster just to have taste of my shield and face the evul nukes from casters. Naming one by deathspam? Hehe, I think not
In few words, Armsman and Mercenary are the most useless classes in this game. Yes, both of them are good in 1v1 fights but they are not as grp friendly as pally is. Shield specced arms is OK, but what goes for merc and poler, well, they cant give same protection to caster that shield specceds can do and they dont do as much damage as caster can do(useless is wrong word, English isnt my main language, so sorry ). Now you can call me a n00b who dont know anything about this game. Well, I hope you do because I do think I'm a n00b who dont know anything about this game.
Mostly winner is the grp who mess first, and if that's not your grp, it dont really matter are you merc/pally/arms, you are dead anyway. If I'm the last one alive from my grp I have been A) afk B) very drunk or C) mids/hibs have played well, messed us and killed casters and healers first. If the caster I protect dies before me, I have failed in my job=I'm pissed
This all is just a thought by a stupid and fat shield specced Armsman. Maybe Albs would be better if they have more mercs/polers, I really dont know or care, I'm retired

damn Sagba posted before me, normally when in a defensive situation like a mg camp or keep defence I keep trying to tell saggy to go keel something or someit to keep him from getting bored but he always says he prefers blocking attacks from me even in positions where i am not going to get touched. Damn him for retiring

He's usually last to die in his group (he's a tank so lowest priority target usually..) and even tho all the clerics and friars are dead, a healthy supply of buffs typically drop from him.
However, please lets not turn this into a lame thread about buffbots, there's already one of those here:

we normaly group with clerics....
if theres a cleric in group hrod will probley be buffed well just like any other tank

Sure, I use my luvbunny to buffmyself when I have the second comp free. Better join them that get beaten by them. Buffbot users that is.
Hrodelbert does not use a buffbot of his own, but ofcourse he accepts buffs, who wouldn't.

yep I never said he shouldn't accept buffs, merely that a few times I've fought against his group he has had buffs drop at the end even tho all potential buffers were dead. And personnally I couldn't care less if people use buff bots or not, up to them really <shrug>

Seriously, does no one appreciate my efforts to charge full groups and kick one or two of them? Guess no one has seen my amazing deaths spams at early morning.. (okay okay some of those might come from me dying 10 times from alb zergs but still... once in a while.. once in a while... I own the place at 4am!)
