Oh yeah, you guys got stuck with that cos old 'Enry wanted a divorce. I was forgetting that bit.

Edit: I remember for the half a year or so I was in a UK school, I was always getting done cos I didn't know any of the hymns we did for thursday assembly. I also didn't know what assembly was, or what a prefect was. Only thing I did know was not to mess with a small blonde kid cos he went to judo classes and didn't hesitate to demonstrate what he'd learned :)

I think the separation of church and state is enshrined in the US constitution. I think the UK is supposed to be a secular state, but I'm not sure if there's many legal reasons for it.

However, Tony Blair converted to freaky-pope-loving-catholic after he stepped down as PM as there would have been legal impediment for him to do so whilst PM (and he should have declared his faith beforehand). Personally, I think it was a cynical ploy as he knew he was becoming middle east envoy and it was politically convenient...

...the cunt.

Aye. Funny how religious people don't look at this glaringly obvious bit of well-known history and give themselves pause. Maybe see this as some evidence pointing towards religion being bullshit?

What's even funnier is that I've heard CofE people complaining how stupid and wrong Catholics are :D

On the other hand though, judgements in the 19th and 20th centuries have meant that English law is effectively secular in the main.

yeah but anything that contains the word "effectively" is more or less meaningless and will be wiggled out of at crunch time. like a non-written promise of extra bonus cash.

Why do you think that is dangerous? The last thing we want is centralised government, thats a terrible thing, just look at the EU.

Do you want to live in America, where in many states it's ok to marry your cousins, or illegal to have alcohol sold on certain days?

Fuck that shit. State laws in America shows that even in huge countries (which ours is not - so can easily be governed centrally) diversifying laws to regions is utter nonsense if you're all under the same government.

You lot are the new zealots lads, you just dont realise it.

My previous sig indeed demonstrates the problems with democracy, however I wasnt discussing democracy, I was saying, if they all want to do it, why cant they? ...

Its great for the central government though - they can delegate all the messy shit while concentrating on the vote-winning stuff.

They are all equally stupid - it still comes down to blokes in dresses in expensive buildings telling you what to do.

And even if they did, what about new people joining? Allowing accommodation to religion in the public sphere is going to come back and bite you on the arse eventually.

I didnt know they all didnt want to do it :(

However I still cant help but imagine a council that is perfectly happy to do things the same way as it has done for years and years is suddenly told how to conduct it's business by some pc right-on pillock who thinks its wrong to be religeous, unless you're a muslim, in which case not only is it ok but you must be treated as a racial minority and given extra stuff.

I must point out though that I dont know if that's the case :)

Ffs throd ! Read the threads properly. If you did you'd know the mayor who wanted the prayers here was the sociopathic cock-boil.

Its only discrimination if Muslims and Jews are allowed to have Saturday off. As the article doesn't make this clear its all a bit pointless.

My 2c, the only protections one should have from discrimination are features you have no choice about; race, age, sex, disability. That's it. Religion is a choice and not deserving of protection any more than membership of a political party or the Tufty Club.

Was she representing herself? I can't see ACAS or any other similar entity thinking that case worth taking on.

The opinion that secularists, the BBC and "the left" harbour some special love for Muslims, I hear this argument constantly. From family members as well as all over the internet. Why is it so widespread?

I mean the definition of secularism should be the biggest clue that no one religion should be treated above any of the others.

The stuff with Warsi recently denouncing "militant secularists"... How is it even possible to be such a thing? Surely that's close to an oxymoron?

The US has the most secular constitution of any nation, by the people for the people etc. Contrasted with ours which has an official religion, and technically gets authority from a higher power, via the Queen. This was originally intended to prevent persecution of the various religions, and now the US is by far the most socially religious first world country. Surely the religious people over here should be in favour of secularism also?

Nah, they want power and the supremacy of their specific fairy over all things.

And they can see it ebbing away from them so they're getting all pissy and uppity :)

sec·u·lar·ism n.
The view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education

They want their nonexistent deity at the heart of civil affairs and education.

An aunt and uncle of mine are Jehovah's Witnesses. They believe the earth is 6,000 years old, and that all their friends will be waiting for them when they die.

They're both lovely people, very "British", and utterly without bias. I love them both and their views don't affect my estimation of them, but I think with regard to their religious beliefs, they're deluded.

Warsi is a silly cow who tried to defend the last Conservative government's "section 28". Take her complaints with a pinch of salt.

They don't think at all.

They don't think at all.

I think for many religious folk there's no believing(or other active shizzle) involved outside if someone asks them if they're religious. Automated stuff really; my dad was a fireman and his dad before him. You know the deal.

Jehovah's witnesses are hilarious. There is batshit crazy and there is batshit crazy.

One of these days I must debate their comical views with them, whenever they turn up on the door it's always when I am in the middle of something though.

If all religion was gone, something else would just take its place as a rallying cause for humans to do silly things ;)

As a cause? Sure why not. I feel that humanity should be focused on getting drunk, trolling random people, having sex in elevators(we need more elevators), eating bacon related foods, cake as desert, while focugin on creating more interactive gaming equipment/software.

I shall call it; Drunkatittism.
