Trion community manager Evan "Scapes" Berman has announced that ArcheAge's western alpha will expand in the weeks following GDC. In a post on AA's early-adopter fansite ArcheAge Source, Berman explained that pre-launch beta packages will be offered which grant closed beta access, and he confirmed that the fantasy sandbox will feature a free-to-play business model and launch "in the Americas and Europe this year, 2014."

While he didn't address the controversial and game-changing 1.0 patch that developer XLGAMES has already pushed live in Korea, Berman did emphasize ArcheAge's sandbox features. "Both Trion Worlds and XLGAMES want ArcheAge to be a free-to-play sandbox that fits our 'no tricks, no traps' vision and will make development decisions to achieve that goal in Trion's territories."

Finally, Berman said that Trion plans to offer cash shop items that "provide solid value and fun, while earned and crafted items are objectively superior."

[Thanks Zenaphex and Oskar!]

I think Trion is going utterly insane. Last DLC for Defiance introduced Japanese Samurais, and now this game will have hotrods?

Published on April 10th, 2014 |by cinderboy1ArcheAge – New update to reward players for open world PK

ArcheAge Korea will be getting its version 1.2 update next week (16th April), and player rewards will significantly increased for both PvE and PvP. Along with the new trailer, other new stuff include maps, monsters, gears, farm products and more. The English server under Trion is now in the Alpha phase.

ArcheAge-screenshot-2.jpg

1. Open field monsters will now give much more experience points than before.

2. Open field player kill (PK) will now reward players with experience points, an increase from nothing previously.

3. Boss monsters now drop much better loot, while new crafting materials are also added.

4. New farm products. Farming will give much more experience than before since it will increase along with skill level.

The trailer above also features the development team talking about updates for the near future, including updates on naval battles, sea trades, giant aquatic boss monsters coming this summer. Later this year, updates for territorial battles and large scale PvP will arrive.

Trion are now selling founder packs, which are basically paying for beta access, but giving you a few fluff items and some cash shop currency. https://www.archeagegame.com/en/shop/
The cheapest one is $50 (about £30) and gets beta access, a basic glider and a bit of currency. If you want alpha access, prepare to pay $150 (about £90) for that...
I'm ok with getting funds together in advance and all that, but those prices are just a bit too steep... I paid for access to EQLandmark, but that cost far less, and also gave you the chance to interact with the devs, giving feedback on where the game is going. Archeage is already built, it's up and running in Korea, so there's no influence on the game or anything here. Just lining Trion's pockets it seems, and giving them a testing crowd AND money up front at the same time.

Played a bit this weekend was ok for a free game but to get a house it seems you need a sub. Didn't seem that bad to level saw a few high 30's running around but it's the end game which looks good, trade runs, all kinds of pvp which sadly I couldn't get to test.

Need a guild to do pvp really as when your doing trade runs to make money, anyone can attack you inc your own faction. If a player on your own faction does too much faction killing they can get arrested and go infront of a random panel of judges. If found guilty ( normally what the verdict is ) you are imprisoned and when you escape you become a pirate ( the 3rd realm ). Pirates can kill anyone and i think anywhere.

Cause its open world pvp the high end of the game revolves around pvp as it seems its every guild for themselves. Boat wars are fun (can make boats through crafting). It's a simple game but cause it's free i think it's worth having a go, if you don't like it no money wasted.

Despite all the silly fluff, I'm kinda interested in trying this game. Will probably immediately regret it (as usual) but as 1) CU alpha got put back 6 months and 2) it seems very similar to Aion in terms of the combat system (imo the best MMO since DAoC for pure mechanics) I'm tempted. Will probably play with a few friends, but might look to join others in a bigger guild (with a PvP focus I hope) due to the nature of the game. Any FH'ers going to play?

ArcheAge won't be budging on its commitment to an open PvP world; it's simply how the game is constructed. Players who want to avoid getting ganked will need to keep an eye on war zones that move throughout the world and accept the inherent risk that comes with attempting trade in those regions.

And it's still not gonna be an acceptable compromise for those who dislike pvp. It never was in any of the other open world games with forced pvp, and it sure won't be the case in this either.

Loads are gonna try it anyway at the start but as sure as snow melts in the summer it'll end up just like for example Aion did.

A game that everyone who isn't fanatic about the pvp will avoid like the plague.

But at least these games have that as an excuse instead of "our game is shit" to use when the player base inevitably takes a nosedive and crash. :)

Played up to level 23 last night, pretty bog standard Asian MMO (which I like) with a really interesting class system and a pleasingly quick leveling curve. I really like it except that I absolutely share @Ctuchik's reservations on how long a game with this kind of hardcore PK world will last. Put on top of that the F2P/cash shop issues (which I'm still undecided how I feel about) it could easily swing either way. With CU delayed for 6 months I'll definitely give it a go, but these days if I play an MMO for more than 2 months I'm surprised.

Is it sinking or just terrible graphics?

Sounds really interesting, bit of a WoW addict atm but got nearly 3 months until the expansion so looking for something to play casually, FTP if possible.

It's a 'clipper' so it's really low to the ground, idk, it's a very flat looking boat.

The game is a laugh, defo going to play it on release. Lots to do, good combat system. Reservations about the cash shop and jail system, but willing to give it a chance for sure.

You can make custom cloaks, which is pretty sick. You can also put your custom crest on your boats, but ours got stolen. :D

I've heard of this being described as a sandbox game. What sandbox features set it apart from the current MMO crop? Does it have a different feel?

To me at least, it definitely does have a different. After level 30 you can literally PK anyone, even your own guild mates. A lot of crafting stuff is based around farming, running trade routes etc - don't have the ability/resources to do that? Kill other people and steal their stuff. The drawback to this is you get crime points if you're caught doing it (there's an in-game report system) and you can go to jail (basically an in-game timeout, I went to jail for ~10mins a few times in beta). If you keep comitting crimes, you become a pirate. As a pirate you're an outlaw on the main islands and if you die there you go to jail instantly for 40mins, but outside of that you have a lot more freedom - you can PK freely anywhere on the sea (yep, you can make your own boats and steal/destroy others, there's fully-fledged naval combat etc), on the various islands and on the lvl50+ island which will be released later this year.

The game is certainly not without its problems, the cash shop poses issues for some players. I don't have a problem with it personally as there's nothing you can't get in-game without paying, but it is DEFINITELY a lot easier/quicker to use cash shop items for some things (crafting for example) if you want to go down that route. Other than that I really like it.

You can have guild cloaks, I mean, what's not to like? :)

Also, considering taking on a couple of extra members for release. We'll be playing on Kryposa, East. Eventually we'll go pirate, but not before we've geared up and secured crafting etc etc.

Our focus will purely on PvP, but obviously any necessary PvE will be taken care of. We're 13 people at the moment and won't grow much bigger than that, so what we can offer is a tight knit community of skilled players but we what we certainly don't offer is a huge guild where you'll always be able to get big groups going, do raid content etc. If that appeals to you, drop me a pm here or, ideally, on irc - #crowdcontrol irc.quakenet.org

Looks fun, lots to do, lots of ways to play. Plus, seems the game has been out in the korea for a while so less chance for awful bugs

I've dredged up my old Rift login details to download and have a play, purchased a package to get a head start and glider. Basically I just intend on flying around on the glider etc and do some leveling to get used to the combat system. Archer or Mage type looks fun to start with.

ArcheAge Version 1.2 Build 4.8: Patch Notes
GAMEPLAY
* The drop rate of loot bags from monsters has significantly increased.
* The drop rate of Sunlight Archeum, Moonlight Archeum, and Starlight Archeum from loot bags has been greatly increased.
* The chance of equipment from loot bags has increased from monsters. These items can be salvaged to gain archeum.
* The Solid Shaft recipe is available again, allowing for the construction of fishing boats.

INTERFACE
* The Auction House can now be searched using German and French.

MARKETPLACE
* The Marketplace inventory has been reorganized in terms of Featured Items and categorization of consumables.
* The Additional Character Slot item has been added. Accounts may have a maximum of six character slots per region but a limit of four character slots per server.
* The Workman's Compensation labor potion has been returned to 12-hour cooldown and price of 300 Credits.
* The Auction House License permitting non-Patrons to create Auction House listings has been added. It is not tradable.

OTHER
* The priority server login queue for Patrons is now even faster.

COMING SOON
* Cosmetic Costumes: A future build will remove the stats from all costumes that are obtained or crafted in-game, much like stats were removed from costumes on the Marketplace. Similar to the normalization of mount speeds, this change is to prevent power creep and stat inflation while also promoting costume choice and preventing "best" items to be wearing to maximize your character's gameplay.
* Improved Anti-Spam: XLGAMES is delivering a way for us to integrate our internally-developed anti-spam technology which learns over time and then kills spam and spammers before you see either even once. Expect more details on this to be announced next week.

NOTES
* This patch is less than 200MB large from the Open Beta client (8.5GB large as a new installation) and is available for download now from Glyph. Note that Head Start begins September 12 at 10:00 AM PDT (GMT-7).

So many important issues fixed here. Fucking great stuff 1 day before launch. :)
