Eager sandbox fans have been waiting -- some without showers or nutrition -- for word of the next phase of ArcheAge's beta testing for a while now. Happily, they can go spruce up their hygiene and eat a Big Mac now that XL Games has revealed the details about the upcoming closed beta test 4.

The good folks over on the ArcheAge blog have translated the news for us. If you've already been a part of the third beta test, you'll automatically be rolled over into this next one. If you haven't gotten into the beta yet, you can apply for CBT4 from today through Sunday, December 4th. Of course, you might need to brush up on your Korean if you do.

Lucky beta testers will be informed of their status by December 7th, with the beta test kicking off on the 8th of next month. ArcheAge's closed beta test 4 will have approximately 5,000 players when all is said and done.

A fan translation of a Korean dev interview is our latest clue as to what ArcheAge siege PvP will look like. A thread on the ArcheAge Source forums analyzes the new CBT4 teaser video that XLGAMES released last week and concludes that the free-for-all nature of the game's third continent will lead to a lot of PvP action.

As of now, there appears to be no real consequence or penalty for either death or inflicting death on other players, though there is an interesting mechanic relating to building or sieging castles. The construction process requires a "core" element called akium, and there's also a limited number of areas where this core may be used to control land (and subsequently build structures). The core element is carried by players and is dropped when they are either killed or log off, which may result in some fairly intense struggles for control of ArcheAge's PvP continent.

It's worth noting that two of the game's three continents will still feature housing and PvE, but if you're looking to PvP or contribute to a castle, you'll need to brave the FFA continent and coordinate with your buddies to control the akium long enough to stake your claim.

It's being described as a Sandpark game, a mix between theme park (quest driven, linear progression) and sandbox (highly customisable, player driven). It features three islands, two of which are PvE, containing the usual towns, dungeons, quests etc. You can also build on these two islands, making your own houses, settlements, ships and so on.
The third island is a PvP island. You can't build houses there, but you can build guild forts, I believe, and siege other forts, as well as just scrap with each other.
That's how I see it from what information I've found floating around anyway.

XL lowers the curtain on ArcheAge CBT4, releases stats

ArcheAge's fourth Korean closed beta test is officially in the books, and XLGAMES has released a few noteworthy numbers from the three-month event. The test began on December 8th (that's a whopping 95 days ago if you're counting at home) and saw the creation of 173 guilds, the building of 3,400 houses, and the planting of 2,200,000 trees.

Players also bought (and sold) 130,000 livestock, 750,000 pine trees, and 660,000 strawberries, according to Korean news site ThisIsGame. CBT4 featured over 40 patches that introduced several new systems to the ArcheAge client, among them siege warfare, the family system, the pirate system, and aquaculture.

"We deeply appreciate the testers who participated [in] the long test of [an] incomplete game," said XL's Yong-Gon Kim. "Later schedule(s) (will) be announced as soon as we finish reviewing the test." Western fans are hoping these upcoming announcements will include some sort of English-speaking beta but thus far XL has been silent on the matter.

E3 2012: XL COO on ArcheAge, CBT4, and coming to America
by Jef Reahard on Jun 7th 2012 1:30PMFantasy, Events, real-world, Game mechanics, Interviews, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Massively Interviews, Massively Event Coverage, ArcheAge, Sandbox0

This is one of those good news/bad news ArcheAge articles. The good news is that XLGAMES' sandpark title is absolutely coming to the West. The bad news, though, is that we still don't know exactly when.

XL didn't have an official presence at this year's E3, but the firm was kind enough to set up a private interview with COO Suk Woo Choi away from the hustle and bustle of convention ground zero. We talked at length about CBT4, game systems, and the challenges inherent in localizing ArcheAge for Europe and America.

archeages615742fw62an.jpg

Massively: Can we expect to see the game in the West any time soon? We've got a decent-sized sandbox audience here that is constantly saying ArcheAge, ArcheAge... so when can we play?

Suk Woo Choi (translated): We are definitely going to service ArcheAge in Europe and America, and we have been meeting with major publishers. It's a question of timing at this point.

You are localizing for China and Japan as well, from your native Korea. How's that going? Is the West next in line or perhaps waiting for those two projects to finish?

The open beta will happen in Korea first, of course, and we haven't yet fixed when the game will come out in China and Japan just yet. We feel that China will be first, and they've already started marketing the game even though there are still things to be determined.

We've seen some trailers from Tencent to that effect.

Yes, they are aggressive when it comes to marketing, but as with America and Europe, we don't have a definite timetable to talk about yet.

Regarding CBT4, what sort of feedback did XL glean from the test? Will there be any changes made to game mechanics, or was it more of a polish thing? The test was quite long, a couple of months if I remember correctly.

Yes it was very long. The main thing that we saw was that since we have so many features, like the crafting, housing, and siege warfare, some testers may not have seen that these are all one mixture, and they were experienced separately.

So it was almost overwhelming, in a sense, like there's so much to do; where do I start?

Yes, but also with the closed beta, the main portion of the feedback received was what we expected. The main purpose of this CBT was to gather plenty of data, and we accomplished that.

And there will be a CBT5 coming up soon?

Yes, we haven't announced it officially yet, but it will probably be later in the summer.

During the fourth CBT, a few of our readers had trouble grouping up with their friends on account of racial/faction restrictions. Was that intended, or is that something that will be addressed in future builds?

For CBT4 that may have happened, but our actual plan is for parties of all races and factions to be able to play together. That is one of those things that will be smoothed out as we go forward, since we definitely want everyone to be able to play with his or her friends.

With all the data collected in CBT4, were you able to see what sort of economy ArcheAge will support? Specifically, is it more of a loot-drop game, or will player crafters supply weapons, gear, etc.?

Most of the CBT4 items came from quest rewards. The crafting system is still very much a work-in-progress.

When you say work-in-progress, is that just from an implementation standpoint, or are you still tweaking it in terms of design and function?

It's more a design consideration now. We're trying to balance the economy with the other aspects of the game, so I would say that it's more about getting the design and function just right.

What about lore? There's an ArcheAge novel, written by a major Korean author, but a lot of that is lost on the Western audience despite the fact that it's quite a rich backdrop. Will that come through in the eventual English localization and in-game quests, etc.?

Any novelization translation will of course be up to the writer, but XL does own the histories of the races and factions, so we'll see what happens with that. And of course, as you mentioned, a good portion of the story will come through in-game for players who like that sort of thing.

Sounds good, thanks for meeting with us.

~~~
At this point in our sit-down, Choi turned the tables a bit and asked me about American reactions to ArcheAge's gameplay and racial designs, potential business models (subscription vs. free-to-play), and various distribution considerations.
What I ultimately took away from the interview was the sense that XL is very aware of Western interest in its flagship product, and it's also intent on hitting both its core sandpark audience as well as a broader subset of casual gamers who may not normally consider a sprawling, non-linear game.
All of this, along with publisher negotiations and localization logistics, is contributing to the lengthy gestation period for the western version of ArcheAge. Based on my experiences in the game and conversations like this one, though, my gut feeling is that the title is still worth waiting for.
ArcheAge seeks info on western demographics with survey
by MJ Guthrie on Jul 5th 2012 10:00AMFantasy, MMO industry, New titles, News items, ArcheAge, Sandbox0
For sandbox fans in the western part of the globe, watching the development of ArcheAge is a bittersweet experience: sweet that a game with so many coveted features is being developed and bitter that the game is only launching in the East for now. But XL Games has indicated that a Western launch is not so much an "if" as a "when." In that vein, the studio is seeking information on North American and European demographics through a short survey posted on Facebook.
The information garnered from responses may be used to shape decisions concerning ArcheAge in the NA and EU markets. Fans can also give their email address to receive information about the game in the future.
[Thanks to Halldorr for the tip!]
Some Assembly Required: Six essential ArcheAge videos
by Jef Reahard on Jul 6th 2012 1:00PMBetas, Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Classes, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, Opinion, ArcheAge, Some Assembly Required, Sandbox, Crafting
Now that we know ArcheAge is in fact heading West at some point, I no longer feel bad about discussing the game at every opportunity. Prior to E3, any mention of XL's sandbox and its ginormous feature list felt a little like twisting the knife, you know?
Happily, though, that's no longer the case, and I've spent the last couple of days gorging myself on some of the best ArcheAge footage the web has to offer. Some of these clips you may have seen already; some may be new to you. All are worth a(nother) look, though, if only to see just how much gameplay is coming your way courtesy of the genre's most exciting new sandbox.
piratefighting.jpg
I'm going to go all fanboy on this first one, so pardon me for a moment. Can you blame me, though? There are entire pirate-themed MMOs that struggle to match the sheer concentrated awesome in this three-minute clip that takes place largely on the deck of a sailing ship. Well, technically, there are two sailing ships; a broadside cannon battle between them starts things off. This is followed by a PvP skirmish on the decks with swords, magic, and a hang-glider (yes, really: Check it out at 2:03).
The footage was captured during ArcheAge's fourth Korean closed beta test, so as good as it looks here, chances are it will be even more polished by the time it makes its way to Europe and America.
underthesea.jpg
Plenty of games have gone underwater prior to ArcheAge. Guild Wars 2 fans got hot and bothered when ArenaNet announced underwater combat, and other titles, like both entries in the EverQuest franchise, have zoned players in and out of the watery depths.
ArcheAge takes it to another level, though. For one thing, these aren't zones but rather an extension of the game's sprawling open world. In addition to the exploration potential, there's plenty of proper gameplay to be had as well, including boss fights, fishing and gathering, and the "extraction, preparation, and delivery of seafood." Oh, and all of this is accomplished with slick-looking retro dive and scuba gear.
kraken.jpg
While we're on the subject of ocean-going boss monsters, let's recall that ArcheAge's kraken starred in several impressive fan-made beta videos. Steparu.com posted a trio of clips, the best of which was the eight-minute monstrosity you see above. Check it out to see what happens when a gaggle of player-controlled ships decides to challenge the terror of ArcheAge's high seas.
cbt4teaser.jpg
XL released a teaser trailer prior to the start of the game's fourth closed beta phase. Though short (and short on combat footage), it's worth a look for the in-game production values and the nifty narrative that shows an ocean-going invasion force and the siege-bound troops that disembark once the flotilla reaches the coast.
There's more... only 5 media allowed per message, apparently, so:
So ArcheAge has a huge, mostly seamless game world. If you played in either CBT3 or CBT4, you know this first-hand. Luckily, there are plenty of mounts and public transportation to help you travel the game's vast distances. As we learned in CBT3, you get a horse very early on, but that's just the beginning when it comes to spiffy fantasy rides.
Tencent Games (XL's publishing partner in the Chinese market) released this transportation-focused clip in the fall of 2011. It shows off hang-gliders, an airship, automated steampunk carriages, and of course, plenty of player ships.
XLGAMES reveals first ArcheAge story teaser trailer
Fans of the upcoming Korean fantasy sandbox MMORPG ArcheAge already know about a number of the features that will entice them into playing the game if/when it comes to their region, but what about the story behind the world? To draw players into the story, XLGAMES has released a poster and short story teaser video about Orichidna, one of the key characters to change the world of ArcheAge. In this clip, Orchidna asks an unseen arrival, "Why so late?". Perhaps the arrival will be revealed in the next installment as XLGAMES will be releasing the story trailer movie in a series.
ArcheAge CBT5 emphasizes use of the sea with new features
by MJ Guthrie on Aug 6th 2012 1:00PMBetas, Fantasy, Game mechanics, New titles, PvP, News items, PvE, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Housing0
From Kraken hunts to deck-side skirmishes, previously released videos have shown that combat on (and under) the high seas is a given in the upcoming sandbox ArcheAge. At this year's Chinajoy convention, XLGAMES revealed that the seas will play an even bigger role than just a pirate's playground; resources acquired from the sea will be an important part of the game. Players will be exposed to PvE and PvP battles organically while trying to gain control of these resources and battleships will become more vital. And players who prefer a life at sea can forgo living on the mainland as aqua farms and houses at sea can be built in a designated area.
XLGAMES announced the addition of specific Chinese content as well, including Chinese-style castles and medium-sized homes. The studio also announced a new reinforcement feature for siege warfare, but didn't release details. Players will be able to try the system out for themselves during the fifth Korean closed beta next week. As always, we will keep you updated with more details as they surface!
ArcheAge Chinese beta begins May 2013
Yesterday, we brought you the new ArcheAge trailer that XLGAMES originally planned to debut at the Tencent Games Carnival 2012; lucky for us, it released early. Today, we can see the entire live stage presentation the studio put on at the carnival. In addition to the trailer, attendees were treated to costumed actors representing four different classes and at least two different races plus live music and additional gameplay footage.
Next, XLGAMES devs took the stage, and using the names of registered fans in China for the countdown, they announced that the Chinese beta will begin in May 2013. Sadly, there are no subtitles for those of us not fluent in Chinese, but feel free to share if you can translate, and check out the full presentation after the break.
ArcheAge's Korean open beta is in full swing, and Steparu has been spending some quality time with the upcoming sandpark title. A new post details a series of week-long adventures that led up to level 20, as well as plenty of video that covers questing, a tour of one of the game's neutral trading markets, and an instanced dungeon.
Level 50 player reviews ArcheAge, sees 'issues for the casual crowd'
2.jpg
If you're interested in ArcheAge but you haven't been playing the game's Korean release client, there's a thread at the AionSource forums that demands your attention. It's basically a review of the game by a level 50 player, and he has plenty of interesting details to share about PvP and safe zones, the legal, weather, and land ownership systems, and the significant role that crafting and resource management play in the day-to-day experience.
The author illustrates several of ArcheAge's extensive non-combat gameplay options, many of which are focused on crafting and gathering. These take a certain amount of dedication, as not logging in for a few days will result in the deaths of your crops and livestock. That said, it is possible for in-game "family" members to manage things while you're gone.
The ultimate takeaway from the piece is that the author is having a great time in an MMORPG loaded with unique features, though he does see "potential issues for the more casual crowd."
XL releases offline farm monitor for ArcheAge
So farming is kind of a thing in ArcheAge. According to a recent review of the game's Korean client, it's also a thing that requires a certain amount of in-game maintenance, lest your crops wither away and your cute little cows and chickens die of starvation.
Management minigames tend to give time-poor players a severe case of eyetwitch, though, so XLGAMES has released a new tool designed to help gamers keep track of their farm and its furry denizens. The system is basically a monitor designed to alert you (through either a web or mobile app) that your assets need attention. MMO Culture reports that there are currently no options to harvest your crops or feed your livestock outside of actually connecting to the game server.
ArcheAge player infiltrates casino, finds housing blueprint
Ready for some ArcheAge-style gambling? No, it's not lockboxes, but in-game casino gambling looks to be implemented on the game's Korean servers. An article on 2p.com has the details, which are somewhat premature since the author had to sneak into the closed facility via some crafty climbing and judicious use of glider wings.
Inside he found a "spacious hall with lavish decoration" as well as slot machines and three types of exchange trophies, one of which was "obviously [a] blueprint of [a] house." If you're playing the Korean version of ArcheAge, you can check it out for yourself by following 2p.com's map which marks the location on the game's Fantasy Island.
[Thanks Dengar!]
'Don't believe the ArcheAge hype,' lengthy fan review warns
by Jef Reahard on Mar 7th 2013 10:00AMBetas, Fantasy, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Crafting, Housing0
Hyped about ArcheAge? We are too, but as with any MMO, great expectations can lead to great disappointments. That's why we're linking to another fan review of the game's Korean client. While the previous such post was largely high on the game from a dedicated player perspective, this piece at AltTabMe raises more than a few concerns involving AA's combat, sandboxiness, character creation, and more.
While most of the combat complaints can be summarized by the subjectively nebulous it-doesn't-feel-as-polished-as-game-XYZ argument, the sandbox and economic concerns are a bit more concrete. "And like the pirate system that has no reward for serious consequences, the economy has the opposite, high reward with no consequences, except to those who also play the game," the author writes. "Without money sinks and a way to balance out the economy, ArcheAge is heading toward a flatline when it comes to worth."
He also alludes to the possibility that the game's extensive housing and farming systems will be lost in translation from the social gaming culture in Korea to the isolationist achiever mentality prevalent in the West. "When you apply these [housing items] to the real world/game practice you see player-run towns that don't look like towns, but rather more like FarmVille: a homestead of the same resources in bulk, such as goats (which are the most profitable resource) filling every single bit of available space. So you go from being aesthetically pleasing to a resource farm," the writer explains. "The magic of a home and town is lost to min-maxing personal gain. ArcheAge turns into Men Who Stare at Goats."
[Thanks Dengar!]
How's your Chinese? Mine's not very good either, but I imagine that the narrator for the new ArcheAge trailer is just saying the Mandarin word for badass over and over again for the duration of the clip's two-minute-and-29-second running time.
That's because everything in the clip is indeed badass, from the location fly-throughs to the mounts to the boat construction to the combat. The trailer is being released to build excitement for ArcheAge's Chinese beta phase, which is less than a week away. I'd say it's doing a pretty fine job of it, wouldn't you agree? Click past the cut to have a look.
