I started with this horrible ear problem a week ago and the permanent (so far) buzzing noise in my right ear is driving me insane, I hope to God that it clears up soon. Does anyone have any tips on dealing with this problem or any good links so I can get some decent information? I have tried Google but 90% of the hits seem to be from dodgy companies trying to sell herbal remedies.

Thanks in advance.

Would recommend you go to a real doctor and get it examined. I mean one at a place that doesnt start with "www.". Most of the time it depends on what you work with/do on your spare time. Tinittus (sp?) often shows up for people with noicy jobs and such. Heard about people having that "buzzing" in their ears for a while. Goes away most of the time after some resting, if you are lucky :p

So, visit a hospital and check it out. Hope it turns out alright :)

Had tinitus for 3 years, mines high pitched steam whistle noise in both ears, drives you fuckin insane for 6 months, not a problem in noisy places, but trying to sleep was nightmare.

Then suddenly your brain just stop noticing it, not much help i'm sorry, if you look it up they have very little in the way of cures.

Ignore all that alternative medicine bollocks, they're just cashing in on the fact that they haven't found a good cure yet, infections, high middle ear pressure can cause it..do visit a doctor and demand to see a specialist, your doctor will just give you wax drops .

But if it doesn't go away by itself (a lot do) then don't worry, you just get totally used to it, it doesn't seem possible at the moment, but you will.

I look back now and can't understand why it caused me so many sleepless nights.

Oh and by the way, while you're waiting , to cover it up, all tinitus sufferers use white noise , the noise of a radio tuned to nothing, it's actually very easy to listen to ,especially at night.

See a doctor immediately, but be prepared, the treatments can be a bit harsh. Atleast that's what I heard from a friend who suffers from the same problem.

What Job said mostly... I had an attack about 2 years ago. I went deaf on my left ear from one minute to the next and the only noise I could hear was some high pitched buzzing.
I went to a Doc and he being honest to me told me that Sience doesnt know jackshit about the cause nor how to treat this kind of injury. They are only guessing. He also told me that the chance for sponateous healing was about 80% during the first 2 days. (Not for me. :( ) I got daily drips with a natriumchlorite solution to dilute my blood. (One theory is that its caused by lack of blood circulation in the inner ear.) Also he prescribed me some psychopharmaca wich was good because without them I'd have gone insane over the next months. Even with the drugs it was pretty bad stuff.
The deafness went away a 2 days later but the buzzing I can still hear if I want to.

Best thing to keep you from going insane is make sure you always have some noise around you. I dont want to frighten you but get used to the idea that the buzzing will never ever go away again. It will only fade to lower intensity.

My mother suffered from this for many years.
No medication seemed to help but during particularly bad spells she would use a single earpiece connected to one of those small and very cheap radios you can put in a pocket.
This seemed to give some relief as it masked the noise somewhat.
Suggest you may wish to try this but above all else please go and see a doctor.

edit for typo's ... I'm not fully awake yet.

Oh, if you wonder why you got it...

Read some statistics back then saying that in 80% of the cases the victim lives within 200m distance to a highpower line (the huge ones connecting throu the countryside), a transformer station or a cellphone transciever antenna.

If you look it up , you'll find something like 20 million Americans have some kind of tinitus, it's actualy very common, the only good news I can offer is your awereness of it and it's loudness right now is the by far the worst it will ever be, it just slowly gets quieter and you start noticing long periods where you forget you even have it, those periods get longer and longer, I haven't thought abpout it for 6 months till saw your post ;)

i actually have the same problem, appart from it being in both ears. started 2'ish months ago.
I, like you had to battle with insanity in start. Went to 3 different doktors, couldn't sleep, mood swings etc. The last doktor was acutally the one that helped me the most. She said "Learn to live with it". no false hope about cures or anything. i started to ignore it as best as i could. Was hard in the start but it got easier, but it's still far from gone. Try to ignore it. and look at the brightsides. you can start with "hmm, i went 10 mins without noticing this time" slowly you will stop noticing for longer and longer. falling asleep is still an isue but it gets better when you start ignoring it all day.
And at some point your brain might shut off the noise all together, Like Job was lucky enough to find.

I use to have it drives you nuts when you trying to sleep at night.
Thats why i now always put on a DvD when i go to bed or the Radio.

Something to keep my mind occupied while i drift away into a sweet slumber.

I had tinnitus for 6 months after standing next to a speaker stack at a Machine Head gig - I was lucky not to come away with permanent damage. As everyone says, you get used to it.

And I still listen to music so loud your whole body vibrates :D

This is one my own mother has suffered from for many a year now, and like the others here nothing has made it go away and unfortunately its something youll have to live with possibly. The only thing that helped her among the 'miracle cures' was reducing caffeine intake to a minimum. It may be worth a shot but she still to this day keeps off the caffeine even when its become something easily ignored.

Digging up an old thread but another bout of Tinnitus kicked off again a couple of hours ago, had a cold for few days and it seems to have kicked off problems with my ears. Currently sat down with ear plugs in just to try and reduce the ringing, been ages since the last bout and I am really hoping this isn't the start of another bad run, it is borderline debilitating.

I remember when I was 18, i got tinittus on our summer hollydays: the pain was so bestial that I cried on my moms lap like if I were a child :(

QFT.

Have suffered from Tinittus for the good part of 10 years now, hardly notice it and haven't done for several years.

The getting used to is the hard part, after that you hardly ever notice it.

Edit: Hardly noticed the date on the post either, must be getting poor eyes as well. ;)

I get episodes that come and go. A single ear goes deaf along with a high pitched whistle for a couple of hours at a time.
I found that a common factors for me were stress and caffeine. When I'm well rested, in positive spirits and not drinking too much coffee then I don't get it anywhere near as much.

The Mrs suffers from quite bad tinittus, it started off after she had her left ear syringed a couple of years ago, it got so bad that it kept her awake at night. She recently got an hearing aid for that ear which cancels out some of the noise and amplifies background and white noise to cover the rest - it has worked wonders for her.

My ears and nose are clogged up enough thanks, not sure shooting your magic bullet down my throat is going to help much.
