I've rooted my S2 and have an insecure Kernel. Nothing to worry about at all. It was very easy to do and unlikely you will brick the phone!

I may have to PM you with plenty of super-n00b questions if I pluck up the courage to do it

Vodafone gets ICS update tomorrow for S2 Users via Kies or next week for OTA.

Cally has a lot of that. Second rate footy team, second rate fantasy football performance, I'd be disliking all my posts if I were in his position looking up at the greatness that is myself.

Yeah Samsung are a bit nuts when it comes to rolling out updates. Now that you've rooted your phone however there are a large number of ICS roms available to you which will keep the TouchWiz UI if you like it.

This forum is probably the best resource.

CheckROM is a fairly good TouchWiz rom and is regularly updated, its also got its own bolt-on engine which is very good.

For a AOSP experience then the CM9 builds are the best place to go. I'd suggest trying them both out to see which one you prefer.

I'm currently rooted, yes, and running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. I'd like to try to just flash it up to, say, 2.3.7. Any idea where I can find the .tar files? That XDA site is so confusing

Not of a lower spec phone than mine, no ;)
Yes everyone wants a heavier phone, launched running outdated software, on old SOCs and GPUs. Oh its got a higher mpixel camera...oh but it uses the same die size..so you probably get worse pictures as a result (theres a really good article floating around, i'll try and find it i think it was on Ars, about the Nokia 40MP camera and how it should be terrible if it was built like yours, mine, apples or most other camera phones. But due to how they arranged the lenses and the die it actually works. Cramming more pixels onto the same sized die actually makes the image worse due to pixel edges and thus dropped parts of the image). Oh its got more drive space, yep i'll give you that one as a plus, shame about all those minus's tho!

Its also a shame that its such a really awful looking phone. Its like someone said "Hey Apple and Samsung have made square phones that did really well, we should do one to...oh but lets put some cancerous growth onto the bottom of it to make it 'Sony' style". No Apple and Samsung did well as they made good phones, the shape was secondary (actually the thing i disliked about ym SGS2 and the 4S most was the corners, they dug into the hand after holding it for an extended period of time. Curved corners like the Original Desire, Nexus S were, in my opinion much better. Infact its a real shame that companys haven't picked up the Nexus S curved screen which was really nice imo. The curved screen felt better in the hand, and in the pocket. Any pressure on the case would be evenly transferred to your thigh, rather than creating a stress line across the case as the point of connection....real shame imo.

And oh god they didn't even make the back edges of the corners curved to lessen the finger pain, oh deary me.

But anyway, your that SXS Zealot from the other thread, so i'm fairly sure you'll read the above and have some sort of verbal fit and disagree with everything i've said. Fine, thats your opinion.
Although I am sure that when sony bring out ICS for SXS it'll be the best thing since breast shaped sliced bread and every other version is crap......in your opinion.

But dont go stating "facts" like "lower spec" when 2 minutes on wikipedia or GSMarena shows you are so very very wrong. Anyway this is the wrong thread for this. If you want to have another argument about it, i suggest the actual phone related thread you crapped up previously.

OK, you can't have Honeycomb first of all.
Honeycomb is tablet only.

Phones are Gingerbread -> Ice Cream Sandwich...no gaps between.

I'll tell you this now tho. If you try to install any custom rom, you will have to wipe your phone the first time you install that ROM. Any subsequent upgrades to that ROM series you can install over the top of your current one.You can't just "bump" up the firmware of your Samsung version without wiping it out and replacing it with a custom rom, which involves wiping the data section of the phone, failure to do this will result in your phone not doing very much except crashing.

But if you go from ABC Brand ROM to XYZ brand ROM you will have to wipe and start over. Its all down to security certificates and black magic.

I donno where your reading bad things about CM7, i used it on my SGS for along time and didn't have any issues beyond "Why does it play notifications on speaker and headphones" which 99% of android devices do for some reason.

CM9 is still in dev, but imo is fairly far along now that Smasung have stopped ebing stupid buggers and giving the ICS source to the OSP project. If you worried about going the AOSP root, try checkrom out, its Samsungs ICS build but modified a bit.

Don't get precious darling I was taking the piss. I'll know not to try and have a laugh and a joke with you in future, as you clearly had your sense of humour removed at birth. Even when I leave a blatant smiley in the post to show that I'm joking, you missed the point entirely. I'm not sure, maybe all that sand in your vagina is affecting your ability to read?

P.S I see no "facts" in your post other than it's running Gingerbread. The rest appears to revolve around the argument "I don;t like it". Well congratulations. I don;t like the One as it looks like a bar of soap with a particularly bad pimple on its back. Horses for courses and all that.

I just noticed that upgrading to ICS means the music player now reads and plays .FLACs! Fucking win.

Really? Brilliant, now for a new phone with expandable memory options....

Yeah, I used to have to run them through a third party app that supported them but when I went to do that this time I realised I'd already heard the tracks earlier through the default player.

It's a tough choice for me, quite happy with the iphone + jailbreak as a phone, but I'm really liking the new android phones and ICS looks brilliant, may well switch back. FLAC is a big one for me.

The biggest drawback of ICS for me is that they've replaced all the awesome android inspired smilies, replaced with horribly generic normal smilies.

The old ones had so much character and a much better brand consistency. I want them back :(
