But it doesn't even make sense. The demand for them was low in 2001. Then they were there for 20 years and did nothing with them. Now they have left.

That's it. They wanted the lithium all along!!!

It's likely why China is kissing Taliban butt now. Valuation of the Lithium alone in upwards of $4 Billion. Just hoping the new battery tech will make it obsolete soon. Graphene is taking market share and a hell of a lot better for the environment.

Taliban have started towards Panjshir and have given them 4 hours to surrender.

Taliban have said that they won't extend the deadline.

Something will happen if the west decides to ignore them, they can't allow their first days in power bowing down to the US.

So pretty much like the Good Friday agreement, the release of 'political prisoners, troop withdrawal, agreement to stop hostilities... Only difference is that the Afghan govt was not sitting in the room. I would guess they (US) had no confidence in the regime lasting without an ongoing large scale military presence, which was not to the liking of the US voters (in polls).

Our governments aren't that bothered about them. This has been get our troops out first, humanitarian second.

It's a complete disaster, and nobody has considered the long term effect this will have on the international landscape for the next couple of decades.

I was glad you wrote this @Raven because it fits perfectly in what I wanted to say...

We can scapegoat Biden all we want, at the end of the day, we as in the western democracies have got a track record of doing this time and again, we get outraged by the outcomes but we'll all forget about it in a couple of months and you'll hear about the odd story.

I think this is a fundamental problem to why we'll be never be very good at actually helping people out, because we don't really care either, and it's pretty understandable when Afghans over the past 20 years decided to join the Taliban rather than helping out Western forces.

I just think it makes people feel better.

When Afghans start blowing themselves up across the West, they won't be saying Biden, they'll be saying Americans, Brits etc.

Then we'll be supporting the next invasion but it'll be fine because it's not Biden.

But still, all I'm seeing is mainly Europeans being outraged at Biden, but I don't think many Americans actually care, besides the ones that think Biden stole the election, but that doesn't really have anything to do with Afghanistan.
