Assuming what will be tested is: A massive onrush of new players that have to
register new accounts and validate key codes.
The things you want to know is how well the software, hardware, configuration and staff
cope with that situation. And without running it as a simulation.

To split or spread the registrations over several days does not reflect
the situation that will occur at release or head start.
Or am I just in an early stage of dementia?

Not dementia, but we see this very differently ;)

The two things beng 'tested' are different. Yes, you need to test registration works. Yes you need to test server loads for players. If you can humanly avoid it, never, ever try doing both at once. The account creation failure is now cutting in to the limited time available for server stress testing, and that can't be good.

If you have hammered both systems seperately, and they stand up, you can be reasonably sure that the only remaining serious problem come launch day is bandwidth and network capacity, not the actual database handling. Unexpected problems might still hit you, but you'd have done a lot to prevent systems failing.

In this instance, GOA relied on the hope that account registration would work as intended, and now are losing real OB time on the playing servers as a result, as well as annoying potential customers who thought they had been guaranteed a place in an open Beta that, for the vast majority of them, isn't there.

I'm currently trying to soothe myself by listening to Ladytron. Sort of working. Making me want to dance instead. >.>

Well one good thing has come out of all this crap, I've found a great WAR home here :D

Nothing cements a community better than 'hardship'.

This is the stuff that binds us in 'adversity'. :england:

They use one gigantic flat file which they have to run through sequentially everytime to update a record ...

Aye, which system can't handle a few 100k transactions ?

Time to offer some enterprise architecture consulting to GOA ;)

Or introduce them to post-486 processors =)

OMG! I really can't believe that we're all still here. My kids have come home and have gone to bed, my day of gaming a complete disaster, I tried to do the washing and guess what, my bloody washing machine broke down in sympathy. I thought I'd try this evening instead, hoping beyond all hope for salvation...I really shouldn't have bothered.
I can't even log into the war-europe website to even try and enter my CE beta key
code.
Thanks GOA for a miserable day

We have an update on the GOA site,

September 8 2008
State of the key validation page - 10PM CET
Four standard situation and what to do

In our previous news we announced that the news page to register your open beta codes is now available. While the deactivation of the authentication process and the synchronized handling of your registrations helped to improve the communication between the page and the account database, a lot of you encountered one of the following issues.

1. The website confirmed that it stored your data but you haven’t received a confirmation e-mail yet:
You have to stay patient. There is no sense in trying to connect to the patcher before you have the conformation. Before, there was an additional delay between the conformation mail and your access to the server, but our technical team improved the situation and got rid of that delay.

2. You have received the confirmation mail before but your attempts to login end with an authentication failure:
Our technical teams are aware of this issue and are currently fixing it. It should work at the end of the evening.

3. You get the error message “This key cannot be registered as it is not yet valid”:
You used the wrong key, probably one from the headstart or the bonus items. Valid open beta codes have the prefix “PCOB01”, “WARPBE” or “WARPBF”.

4. You’ve been waiting several hours and try to register your code several times with different browsers:
There is no reason to try to activate your code again and again. If you try you only stress the servers and in the end you will receive one mail that you code has been activated followed by several mails saying that “This key has already been activated”.

We know that everyone of you is very eager to get into the game. Our technical teams are continuously working to improve the performance of the registration process. We ask for your patience.

But now with there "SQL" and there "web" thingies, puh ...
