totally agree with this, after all goa's idea of an event is to give lowbies xp deaths and cause a load of em to quit, this game high lvl players who can afford it xp deaths ;) and seemed great fun
this is the sort of thing we could do with more often, random fun stuff appearing in emain to spice it up, the gods punishing pk campers etc ;)

Well...as far as i am concerned...you got what you deserved...maybe not enough for all the trouble you caused. Don't think by coming on here and writing a nice letter about it, or saying you did nothing wrong legally makes it better. You DID do it..End of story.

I am sure i have found better things than you on the bottom of my shoe. Assholes like you who think it is funny make me wanna puke. and the other idiots who stand up for you.

TWATS...hope you never ever come back and disturb us again.

Play with fire and get burned, not like you could blame goa for removing all your chars.

Hm keeping 100$ that you find on the street is a crime, but it´s prolly a hell lot of harder to trace then taking advantage of a gm tool.

Well guys, if you want to flame Laroma... doubt anyone can stop you.

But think about another scenario...

like... what if she hadn't shown interest in the stuff ?

In that case we would've got some guy running around with GM tools and probably all the confidential GOA stuff as well.
And GOA would give a damn about it as long as the majority of their customers doesn't know.

For some reason I'd prefer some epic mobs in Emain and a server downtime, rather than some guy running around with my Account details and stuff.

/salute Laroma

Like I wrote in the letter I expected some (a lot actually) to react this way, and I don't blame you. To be completely honest I never thought I would get the "carrot" anyway.

If you think i'm trying to justify what I did by writing this letter, you're wrong. I know I was wrong doing what I did, and that's also why I decided to come clean about it - to GOA and the public.

What you did was wrong, very wrong and removal of all your chars is a good bit of justice.

but however i agree with hellskor, by coming forward you prevented a much wider problem.

I don't see how anyone would want to hack GOA and do something that has nothing to do with ingame things.

There's only passwords, and game accounts, there's no money, no CC details, nothing.

There would be no reason for anyone to hack them, apart from a player who wanted to be funny ingame.

I don't see what the 'wider problem' could be, as I think noone is gonna attack their servers and shut down the game for 1 week or something.

And all hacking is traceable, you can never get away with it, that's why noone is just gonna hack GOA to shut down a server, because he will only get traced and prosecuted.

GOA doesn't keep your credit card information at all, so that information has not been compromised.

The downtime could have been a hell of a lot worse if he/she hadn't let GOA know, this person could've deleted peoples characters left and right. Noa GOA had a hard time simply getting passwords out, can you imagince what it would've been like if they had to restore a swarm of characters aswell? That is, if he didn't make the backups of the characters go bye bye aswell.

There's no way they can do that. Look at it this way:

Laroma had access to GM commands for an extended period. It's impossible to check if he has changed anything that tained his characters, like giving them more cash, better items, etc.

The only way to minimize the possibility of such taints remaining, the character has to be deleted. Of course, things done to possible 3rd party characters can't be dealt with that way.

Even IF all such modification actions are logged, you can't expect GOA to go through the logs and undo them all to do the person that caused the problem a favor..

e-mail from GOA to me and many others...

Being aware of the trouble caused with the recent changes, we have decided to compensate the loss to all the ones concerned, and you will therefore be granted a full free month of subscription in the coming days

Q. So who pays for a this then?
A. Us of course.. when GOA start going to the wall coz of the cost.

Solution

Option 1 - File for bankrupcy
Option 2 - Increase the subscriptions to the end user
Option 3 - Reduce overheads by laying of staff
Option 4 - Merge servers to reduce outlay
Option 5 - I can make these up all day

Where there is no victim there is no crime

Me, you and everyone else affected are the victims..

I understand others viewpoints but forgive me for not seeing the funny side. :(

Think you are missing a couple of points here. Was GOA who changed the passwords in a manner that you were unable to play for 3 weeks, right? The reason they so did was that a security hole was apparent. The security hole was there and should have been fixed regardless of what Laroma did or didnt.

Now, assuming what Laroma is telling is true, what he basically did was a) know a hacker, b) report him to GOA and c) spawned a horde of epic mobs in Emain.

The last bit of it, while illegal, was apparently what finally kickstarted GOA into actually doing something about the security hole, amongst other things replacing the password system in a manner that left people without passwords and taking support interface down for several weeks.

Was what he did while mucking aroound with GM tools illegal and wrong? Yes. Was what he did the cause of you being unable to play for 3 weeks? No. Did what he did save us from something much worse than epic mobs in emain? Maybe. Seeing how things turned out, I dont feel much assured they actually managed to patch the hole.

> i dont understand why people do things like this, they get their 1/2 hours fun and ruin fun for alot of other people for 3 weeks

In my case, I didn't give enough thought about what the consequences of me getting involved would be. I used personal accounts for most of it (except the Emain "event") leaving an easily traceable trail back to myself. Also, I think you would be suprised with the amount of people PM'ing me saying "I would have done exactly the same in your situation". If you read the essay properly, you would realize that I had the GM characters on my accounts for about 3 weeks before GOA finally found out, so the "event" in Emain was just a very small part of it.

Also try and realize i'm not the reason GOA took 3 weeks to reopen their systems. I only provided them with the information to close the "holes" in form of a great deal of URLs, logins and passwords.

> what exactly did you gain from this and how did GOA screw you over? imo you screwed us over

In the end, I didn't gain anything, and I really never expected I would. GOA screwed me over by giving me false hopes about getting my accounts/characters back only to get all the information I had to give them. I realize some of you see this as a case of "getting what I deserved", and I don't blame you. I won't try and argue the point to my benefit.

I don't think it's fair to try and turn this into a 'what if' type of thing. What if this person had never broken the rules and then never felt guilty and then never tried to 'cut a deal' with GOA in order to save his characters? Well, we may have been facing a worse threat, sure, but there's no way we can assume so much. And there's no way, in my opinion, there should be even any hint of a 'thank you!' for this person.

The facts are: He broke the rules and had some fun. He got guilty and tried to save his characters (not for the greater good of the community, I'd warrant) and GOA didn't hold up their side of the shady 'deal' which I think they had every right to do. I don't want you still playing.

And as for your post: 'I don't want sympathy... blah, blah' 'I know people won't understand the full, heroic reasons that I did this and I accept this... blah, blah.' 'I don't want anything, I know I did everything wrong, but can everyone please campaign on my behalf to get my characters back, pretty please?' Say it all you like; to me it stinks of one of those old reverse psychology 'I don't want anything' tricks - you obviously do want something out of all this or else why would you post it?

This is what it seems like to me.

'I screwed up and don't want anything apart from the community to flame me endlessly completely. I deserve it.

'P.S - GOA screwed me over and stole my characters and unless I get them back I'm leaving forever.'

Ironically in game things are worth money. Say somebody used a GM account to ding characters 50 with a few RR levels and a 10p in the bank - one assumes with a GM account this is pretty easy. Those accounts can then be sold on for cash. Yes it's against CoC, but hey anybody using a GM account for this sort of thing wouldn't care about that anyhow. As long as the person kept low profile (didn't do anything stupid like make the character RR10) it would have probably gone un-noticed, eventually totally screwed the server economy and those that played on there. That's just one incidence on how this could have been used to gain real cash.

Don't think these two had this in mind, just shame they got tempted instead of reporting it all straight away, but as they say "I can resist anything but temptation". Just hope they've got the person (or people) behind it all.

I hope you realize how big financial blow this is to GOA. Game servers being down for a while, people not being able to subscribe/renew, all the bad publicity.

If I were you, I'd consider myself lucky not being prosecuted in a court of law and ending up paying some cash. Sure, you are not the main culprit here and might actually get off without (big) fines etc.

Saying you were screwed by GOA is bullshit. If they have a security breach, they will tell you that you can get 10000 GM accounts on every server if they have to seal the breach. That's the deal. That's EXACTLY what they should do, secure the hole as soon as possible, at any cost. Not many companies would even consider opening your accounts again with no chars.

I'm not gonna yell at you and so on, you probably feel bad enough already for screwing up the gaming experience for tens of thousands of people all over Europe for days/weeks.

Sure GOA could have handled the thing better PR-wise and so on.

I hope you have given all the information you know about MrX to GOA/police so they can track him down and put him on trial for all the damage he has done.
