Bah... common stereotypes once again. tbqfh, since I moved here a year ago, the only automatic weapon I've seen here in public so far was an M16 carried by a cop in Portland... and he carried it from the station to his patrol cruiser.

State law in Massachusets, for example, prohibits pretty much anything but hunting rifles. Cities can ban guns as for example Lewiston/Auburn does here in Maine. Haven't read of any gun related deaths here for awhile.

Let me take the crime statistics of a low income UK neighborhood and come up with some 'only in the UK do chav boys rape old grandmothers while joyriding a stolen car'. :p

Eh. Are you denying the seriousness of gun crime in the US?

I've seen a fair number of guns in the UK recently. All carried by police. I think they're mp5's. Seen them standing around the train stations and airports.

I am not.

What I am trying to do is to point out that you cannot stereotype an entire country including its 300ish million inhabitants.
There are obviously parts of the US where gun laws are as strict as in any more civilised European country. Catch my drift now?

I wasn't stereotyping. I find it amusing the assault weapons are for domestic sale, and even more amusing the fact that you can rent a gun, the same way as you can rent a carpet cleaner, for those domestic emergencies, or times when you absolutely have to kill something but, darn it, I left a rifle off the shopping list last time I was at Walmart.

When I travelled the US I saw quite a few guns. Handled a couple (though to be frank that scared the hell out of me, holding a loaded gun with no safety catch). Different states have different ways of interacting with guns, that's true, but it's a distinctly american thing to have guns so commercialised. Unless there is an impending armaggedon, I can't see a domestic use for assault weapons in any state.

Mr Sick is a bit defensive?

Maybe you should read the site properly?

You can rent guns, yes but only to use at their indoor shooting range. :)

Hah, ok, that makes a lot more sense! I did start reading the site, but didn't make it down that far - got a bit distracted by all the other stuff :) Anyway, that was just a bit that tickled me, I was really commenting more on the fact that assault weapons are no longer banned (in certain states I guess). I just can't see why anyone would ever need one, unless you're hunting an entire herd as opposed to individual animals, or you're planning on getting burgled by all of Blazing Squad .

I am not really defensive. Merely trying to be fair.

I know this country is loaded with guns and I also realize what a big problem guns and gun crimes are here. I am just trying to avoid the usual US bashing since there are exceptions from the rule.

You know what, those policeman at the airport with the big guns DO look damned cool. And slightly hot :/ Damn you, inner psyche, but its true.

When I was in America, I stayed up watching a shopping channel, that was a bit like QVC, except I can only assume their intended audience was male serial killers in the 18-30 age group. Knives big enough to disembowel elephants. Swords. Knuckle dusters. It's just so very different to the way England, and hell, lets be honest, the rest of the world, deals with weapons. Even in Afghanistan and places like that, weapons are for killing soldiers and shooting in the air at weddings, and not something you put in the stocking at christmas.

In one of the countless threads about the new "patriot badge" in City of Heroes [you get a reward for standing near the US flag with your character] somebody raised the issue of automatic weapons being legal in the US of A and asked who would want to be associated with any country which could be so stupid .... anyhoo a red neck promptly replied that legalising automatic weapons would be "stupid" and to relax, because it's only ("only" lol) semi-automatic weapons that have been legalised.

Stupid people from all countries are funny, but when their nation (whatever that nation happens to be) thinks its god's gift to mankind it does make it even funnier.

To be fair, I do think there's quite a difference between full and semi automatic weapons.

what is actually a semi automatic weapon. I mean full automatic means you can just keep the trigger pressed and 'manual' i guess that you have to pull the trigger for each shot. So semi is that you get a few bullets with each shot or what?

Also you could argue that you might need to have to be allowed to have a pistol/revolver/shotgun/hunting rifle, but why would a law abiding citizen need something more powerful?

Full auto: Plonk in the magazine, cock to load one bullet in the spout and hold down the trigger to keep firing.

Semi auto: Plonk in the magazine, cock to load one bullet in the spout and pull the trigger, some of the gas from the explosion feeds back through the gun and cocks the slide again - ready to fire again with just another pull of the trigger.

Non auto: you have to cock every time, once you fire you have to cock it to put another bullet in the barrel.

I was lucky enough to be given the chance to shoot with a South African Police Shotgun and handgun on a shooting range.

Wow what a lot of fun that was!

Especially the hand gun....I managed to hit the target quite a few times.

To be honest If I lived in a country where guns were legal I'd be fucking pissed off if I couldn't get an Uzi or MP5. I mean who wants to pick off the neighbours cat with a poxy shix shooter when you could blow it into tiny little chunks with an Uzi? The fun's all in the splatter people!
