I may be wrong on this, but I didnt think they "had" to.

I thought there was an agreement within the EU to ban his movements within the EU countries. The French were holding the African summit and a lot of the African nations were refusing to show up if Zimbabwe was banned from attending.

The French were between a rock a a hard place, uphold the EU ban on his travel and have an African summit with no African nations attending, or invite them all along and upset Tony.

Personally I think that if the EU had an agreement to ban him from travel around the EU then the French should have upheld it... Then again, they are French so why would they bother to uphold their word???

TBH this can be expected while the world focuses on Iraq, hence why the North Koreans were/are making more noise, they know the US isn't going to want to bother with them atm.

TBH, it can be expected all the time. People look away alot when genocide and violations of human rights are made.

40,000 people are missing, presumed dead, from the Balkan conflict. Scientists are currently creating technology to search for the mass graves beneath car parks and newly constructed hotels.

7,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed in one incident in 1995, in the largest case of mass murder of civilians in Europe since the end of WWII.

80,000 people were murdered in Rwanda in the genocide of 1994.

I think the only reason Zimbabwe gets even a fraction of the attention it should do is because the ex-pats are coming home destitute, or being killed in their homes.

They had to. He was a visiting diplomat/politician/whatever, and EU rules state that such people are immune to any 'travel bans' while at summits/meetings/etc

Well, words to that effect, anyway, but it was on the news at the time.

Don't worry, there's a cruise missle or 50 with his name on it, right after North Korea, China, Vietman (well, they are on an ego trip after all), Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Mexico and Northern Ireland.

FFS Xane, that's so untrendy. I bet there aren't even any badges that you could wear, or some waif like pop stars making one line protests about it. Call me when its fashionable.

Using a mirror and a razor blade no doubt.

Israel, in violation of 68 UN resolutions, for over 40 years.

I reckon its because they couldn't think up an appropriate chant. We have "don't ataq, iraq" but you're going to be hard pushed to find things rhyming with Zimbabwe and Mugabe

According to some countries, Isreal didn't exist until fairly recently.

According to me (and the vast majority of arabs) it still doesn't exist legitimately, and never will

So you are coomplaining about a country that doesn't exist, violating UN Resolutions ? I don't think you can have it both ways.

AFAIK Syria is the only remaining country not to recognise Israel's right to exist, as few of the Arab countries in the region are democratic, whatever their governments say is the line, regardless of popular opinion.

FYI I think Israel should withdraw to the 1967 borders. But as far as existance is concerned, the Arab nations owe their existance to it's recognition, I don't think it is wise to go back on that.

Errrrrr - pray tell, how do the Arab nations owe their existence to Israel? No really, I could do with a laugh

The division of lands of the old Ottoman empire was largely done on acceptance of the Balfour Declaration, up to that point the lands were under British mandate at the end of WW1, the Arab rulers effectively needed to agree to a jewish state in order to gain eventual sovereignty.

The only recognised leader in the Arab world, Faisal, endorsed the Balfour agreement at the 1919 Paris Peace summit. You could even go as far as to claim the Arab king co-operated with the jewish delegates for mutual benefit.

Hmmm, my understanding of the situation is slightly different - I'll have a read through some of my books before commenting further :)
