Yes and in ten years they've come on massively, they've got a league with good stadiums and support, they attract players from outside the US and they export players to euro Ieagues. They have use the experience of ex players and managers from other countries to improve their own league and national set up and they are a decent team now.

Given how popular the MLS is getting now, it's only a matter of time until the grass roots stuff starts coming through. Germany revamped their entire football system after their Euro 2000 flop and it took 8-10 years to really start churning out the talent year on year, can see a similar outcome withe 'murrrka

The college system is also a big bonus, their young players get highly competitive football at an early age.

They just need public interest. If football was as popular as their other sports they would dominate international football.

I'm sure I read that at grass roots levels, it was starting to challenge the other sports for numbers.

That was 20 years ago btw.

I am not saying they won't improve but it would take a massive shift for them to really compete in the world cup.

I read somewhere it was more popular the baseball at certain children age ranges. Baseball is fucking terrible though :p

I think it'd take quite a while for them to really be a world class footballing power. It'll probably never happen considering their love of shit sports.

The dogshit theatrics need to be stamped out if USA are going to it seriously among their other sports.

It is, one of the reasons is that it is so cheap to get into. Play Softball or American Football and your looking at 500-1000 USD of gear to get started. Footy is more like a 100-150 USD, kit, ball and boots. The economical downturn probably helped a lot. I work with a lot of Americans in SoCal and Seattle, most of their kids are playing soccer now.

I agree about the USA, they are very organised about sport and encourage it at a youth level. They will be a top side with in ten years.

....said everyone 10 years ago. Problem is they are good at grass-roots, but participation falls away massively at teenage level.

Colleges are only just waking up to it. It is starting though. Given the money in college sports from TV rights and advertising if it does take it will be big. MLS appears to be gaining support and new teams are emerging, like David Beckam's new franchise in Miami. May take another 10-15 years but I can see them getting there.

About 5 minutes from where i live it is about 10 soccer fields stacked next to each other, and two baseball fields, no american football fields in sight. Apparently they have some footie tournament for kids there...
MLS don't get as much TV coverage as the other major sports do, but then again, only been here for four months. World Cup gets a lot of TV time but i found that the best coverage is from a Canadian channel :)
You can catch a lot of the bigger Premier League games during the season and all the season finale games were shown on different networks. That's better coverage then the PL gets in Sweden.
Worst part is i have to get up at 4 am if i want to see the early PL games :(

@Lakih

I hate those inane commentators on ESPN, they are utterly shite and know naff all about football. If Tommy Smyth is still doing the analysis then I'm sure it is still just as bad. He was a mediocre rugby player and knew bugger all about soccer.

I am desperately trying to delay a trip to SoCal until August so I can avoid that crap :)

Spurs players have been terrible today

This year you mean? :)

Where is this wonder player Leandro Damio (or something), surely he must play better than Jo/Fred did yesterday for all the hype each transfer window. Injured?

Bets for today:
Aus v Netherlands: layed netherlands for £1400 @ 1.25
Cameroon v Croatia: layed Croatia for £877 @ 1.71
Spain v Chile: layed Spain for £1258 @ 1.59

The Spain bet is controversial, but our models say that betfair have them hugely overrrated to win, so we've layed them for maximum bet (£2000/1.59) as it's a very strong conviction. On the other hand, they've got it all to play for and our models don't factor in the emotional and situational side very well, so it might all go a bit pete tong. Oh well. Roll the dice mo'fuckers!

Oh, total running P&L after last night: £1,479.43

Ouch, you took a hit yesterday.

Appreciating your posts about it all though. :)
Aye, 'bout a grand down last night. It's fine, we're still doing well in terms of percentage return on amount bet, which is what it's all about. Given the number of bets, though, it's impossible to say whether we'll be up or down at the end of the tourney. It's all value, though, and adds to our overall basket of value bets we make each day. Make enough value bets and you make a profit, even though individual groups may not.

Do you have another job or do you sustain yourself purely on the betting @Chilly ? Finding your posts fascinating.

Haha, this is where I wish I had IRC logs of Chilly the student from many years ago to paste in here.
