what a load of gash.

Sorry? Are claiming the US were actually good? Or that England weren't woeful? Because you'd be wrong on either count. The US barely threatened and the ref let them foul the fuck out of English players in the box (I lost count of the number of infringements in corners). The English played Route One for about 3/4 of the game and gave away possession like the ball was about to explode. That was easily the worst quality game of this World Cup so far (and I include France v. Uruguay in that).

England played well enough, the problem is people's silly expectations.

sorry DaGaffer but thats balls.

england put some decent passing sequences together and played a decent game, we had some good crosses in from both flanks that on another night could have resulted in goals.

Heskey played well, unfortunate with the chance that fell to him.

I thought it was a far from woeful performance for the first gruop game, against decent opposition. They are only 6 places below us in the FIFA world rankings and have recently had very good results against both Spain and Brazil.

We restricted them to only a couple of decent chances and had far more of our own.

I'm, not sure what else you'd want really, it was only a goalkeeping mistake that stopped us taking all 3 points.

Early goal syndrome TBPFH. Argentina did the same but got away with it - we were pretty woeful :(

Thought we were terrible in the middle of the pitch.

Yet another manager who thinks Gerrard and Lampard can play well together. They can't.

May as well have kept Sven.

Capello needs to go 4-5-1. Ditch Heskey, put Gerrard in the hole behind Rooney.

Oh, and if our goalies can make clangers like that put James in goal - at least he's a good shot stopper...

What A Load Of Shite.

3 managers, 3 failures of imagination. Does someone have to take Lampard or Gerrard outside and have them shot before the England manager stops playing them both in the same team? Ignoring Green's fuckup (which was pitiful but not unexpected), the huge, gaping, yawning hole in midfield was the source of all England's woes. No link play between the back and the front, so route one becomes the default choice; Gerrard getting in front of Rooney and Heskey half the time, getting outpassed through the middle by American journeymen who wouldn't get into any Champions League level team. Fucking pathetic. That was actually worse the four years ago. The only ray of hope was down the right. And I couldn't believe Capello's post-match interview; was he watching a different game? Maybe a different sport?

100% agree.

Wonder if we are still third favourites to win, which fucking bookies decided those bloody odds?

Holland, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Serbia, France, South Korea would all beat us. Before anyone says France are shit now lets remember that they are still better than us :D

I'm, not sure what else you'd want really, it was only a goalkeeping mistake that stopped us taking all 3 points.
To be honest it was a great save that stopped us from *losing* the game.

Edit - Ha! Just seen on SS News that Milner (who I do rate) had the same number of touches of the ball as fouls he committed (2) :D

Edit 2 - We are now 8/1 to win the world cup.

It was the first game = nerves. England never do well in there opening games, but looked a half tidy side? A lot of attacking football, defence seemed to hold up pretty well? Midfield was a bit hit and miss. Not prefect I agree but if that is the worse england performs and they get better more confident... *crosses fingers*

In 1966 the first game was a draw too :p

We had a different level of players then though, so much talent. Waddle, Gazza, Beardsley, Linekar, Pearce etc.

By the way they mentioned 1966 within 10 seconds of kick off. Is there any way we could start a movement to remove ITV's footballing rights

The Green goal was just a freak thing - barring that we would have won comfortably but the main issue I see is that we had an entire 45 mins to get 1 goal v a weaker side and somehow managed to fail at that.

I didnt think much of rooney in that game tbh - he got dis-posessed too easily too many times and still cant find the goal.

Thank god for Gerrard tbh - fantastic shot.

wright-phillips fucked up all the opportunities he had to play to rooney. if rooney had had better support he'd have done better.

So reward the best player on the pitch by dropping him? Whilst favourites like Lampard, who are continually poor for England, are retained?

I'm sure something like that will happen, but as a nation we'll win nothing if we continually play names who happen to play for big clubs over players who actually perform for their country.

I know Heskey's game intimately. He creates space and wins headers etc., but it's a waste of a player since he doesn't know how to score.

Lampard, who was shit last night, was shit because he can't play with Gerrard - and vice versa. (And I'm not a fan of fat frank at all - but that's personal, not for footballing reasons)...

In 4-5-1 with Gerrard behind Rooney then Lampard can play his usual game...

:iagree: Then Milner can play more centrally rather than wide left; a position he never plays in for his club. Even then though, England won't be world class in the middle. Its a real shame Hargreaves is kaput and Carrick has turned to crap.

As for Heskey, he made everyone eat their words with the move for the first goal, but he was blatantly the wrong player in the right place for the rest of the game; too slow, can't score and didn't even win much in the air. His movement into space is great, but that's all he's got in his locker. The best England player was Johnson; but that's only because the US weren't much of a threat so he could press forward at will.

Same thing happened with Owen the year after he made his mark on the world stage, Rooney is gonna get marked out of the tournament.

One good thing came from last night. I'm fairly certain the Scottish Goalkeeper jokes will end going forwards, as it would appear you guys are suffering more between the sticks than we ever have.

Want to borrow Craig Gordon? :)

Do you know how many goals have been scored in this World Cup by strikers, thus far?

None.

Nil.

Zero.

Squat.

France won the World Cup with a striker like Heskey up-top, holding the ball up, bringing others into play. The game has moved on, its not all about Roy of the Rovers anymore.

Told you we'd draw.

Made a score from getting all the outcomes right yesterday from a lonely pound. And I'll be owed £2 from none from a guy in the office for Dempsey scoring. :D

@ Chet

Just watching the england game now and there seems to be a few 'crap' cameras. Long range ones by the looks of things.

The match on now looks awful too, I think it's the local feeds that ITv and BBC are using? They seem to be shite, usually ITV HD is much better quality than this.

Oh and also, it seems Gaffer is the only one who watched the (England v USA) game, the rest of you are delusional. Gaffers analysis was spot on. Still a draw is a good result, and the one I predicted for this game.
