Mystic G, you're making a lot of sense and being pretty positive. This is what we need!

Though there's more in the works, are all our events not good for motivation though? We've got events on every night as far as I'm aware, and no-one turns up.

Events are good - but they aren''t incentive enough for people to subscribe. That's not really in debate, because if they were, we would have done.

It also doesn't get around attracting new subscribers who don't know about the service.

I really think you should give the above public/private server balancing & BarryLite some very, very serious consideration. And if you decide no, still do it :D

But why don't people who are already subbed go along to them? It's a start isn't it?

it's a strange part of gaming psych, but having the game, a server to play it on and the abillity to get online....does not equate instant play. it's funny like that :)

Just got back from Birmingham and on the train nearly strangled some wanker who was demonstrating his one THOUSAND ring tones on his mobile to his mate.

Anyway...

Idea no. 1 -

instead of fannying about on this forum why don't you invite 3-4 of the regulars here who actually contribute and you know them a bit - to GAME.NET HQ for the day to get some feedback and bash ideas out face to face? A customer forum or something.

I don't know if GAME.NET HQ is in London but surely some people must not be that far away from you (I'm considering your expenses here ;)).

Idea no. 2 -

I used to be a tribes admin, was briefly Tribes 2 community liasion and I used to admin the tribes 1 and 2 leagues and admin the league servers along with the rest of the BWTL admins. Then I realised I actually had a life and whilst all the above was fun I wasn't getting paid for it so quit as it was taking up FAR too much time and I have a "proper" job.

As far as I can tell you have natrat and Bazerka to physically set up and look after the servers. How about actually recruiting proper paid up league/liasion/admins? Definitely one for CS and a couple more for the next most popular games. These people could do a bit of marketing for you too? Idea off the top of my head sorry if it sounds lame.

I saw the GAME.NET vacancy recently advertised (I presume that's Teds) and thought for a nano-second about applying but I don't have the all the skillset needed for it.

I would however apply for something lower down the ladder and I think maybe someone like Will would too (forgive me if I'm out of line Will old bean).

Anyway I'll shush and sorry if idea 2 just sounded like me p1mping for a job. It was!

With Ted now leaving I'm the only person left whose got any sort of a community role, although Nat and Baz (and others) of course do their bit via servers and other things. Make of that what you will.

The only thing I can make of that BF is that you are seriously undermanned. I already knew that you had a hell of a load on and that's why I feel so bad PM'ing you with moddy type stuff.

Hmm. Don't really know what else to say at this point so I'll shut up and read on.

/edit: btw BF I didn't include you in the above post as I tend to think of you as much higher up than the stuff I mentioned. No offence meant :)

Im coming to the conclusion that it simply doesnt work. Perhaps people have to be in the mood to play a particular game, and that doesnt always coincide with thursdays at 8.30 pm or whatever.
Dont get me wrong. I flog my dod games every thursday like a mad bloke. I go to other irc channels to try to drag people onto the server. I post on here .
Who turns up ? Normally one or maybe three of the newish good people who play half life mods, and the rest are almost entirely my clan mates. And thats over the whole period, not all at the same time.
It does my head in :/

hehe thanks tdc :)

With regards to my first idea - text based communication is literally pathetic and as demonstrated on here quite admirably - leads to arguments as emotions and connotations just cannot be put across properly.

I'm sure "da suits" must feel the same way, 90% of the bilge on here wouldn't be said face to face.

That because its like trying to tell drivers what times they can & can't expect to be able to use the M25, it doesn't make sense to people because they want to use the road when they want to, not when they're told they can do. Not a great analergy but you get my drift.

My personal opinion is that a core change would have to be made to:

a) how GAME is percieved in the community - (imho BW held peoples interests, GAME brings out the "my god, thats a company" in them)
b) the nature of subscription - I had ideas on this for GamesDomain but they would have never been workable, no idea if they'd be workable for GAME, but I ain't no master of "making stuff work" so I cba to explain at the mo.
c) the access levels for the "GAMEmasters" - from my previous experience personally (more from the "good ole" BW days), the trust only ever seemed to flow in a "from admin, to BW" direction, which I always thought was bad. But then again these were days before you knew if an admin was f'kn about or not, so it was probably more justified than I realise.

I'm gonna stop this now though, as its always been in the past, me just rambling changes nothing, so I'm gonna apply for the job. <DrPepper> Whats the Worst that could happen? </DrPepper>

So go tell your boss! (Didn't you just know you'd regret saying that? ;))

As for this whole "suits" thing, it's a perception issue. The reason you guys are "suits" is because I doubt anyone here sees you on the servers. Though if we follow opinion there is never anyone on any servers so you'd never be seen even if you were there all day..... i love catch 22. Personally as i've said in another thread I reckon a few people would sub just to shoot at me, I reckon theres a whole "General" bunch that would sub for a "shoot at the suits" event or similar..... ;)

I had a VIVID dream last night that I discovered I had telikenetic powers. I thought to myself after a while of moving filing cabinets and little packets of wrigleys thin ice with my mind, this must be a dream.. thought for a while and came to the conclusion that it wasn't.

It was very interesting.

hmmm well i sorta got lost half way through reading this thread but i had an idea or two while i was reading......

there were some intresting ideas so why not mix and match them?

heres a couple of thoughts that sprang to my mind

1] make the servers free to the public but you must have subs to use the bookable servers, webspace, email address and fast ftp

2]make 1 server for each game public (with higher pings) but then advertise subs i.e

console:get GAME.net subs for lower pings :)

(well im sure you get the idea there)

just a thought ill now go and crawl back under my stone

making a server with higher pings is a bit stupid if u wanna advertise or give samples of ur really good servers, in my opinion

why wasnt this sort of thing done BEFORE the service started?

obviously u did some research into the whole subscriber model, just not enough from the looks of things!

i think thats what annoys me most, the fact the system wasnt trialed to the public, and shown that it just doesnt work.

as for renewing i do like the hosting here, so i probably would. I wouldnt renew for the gaming service at the moment.

okay..

seriously, does anyone think there are any Game employees on the forums apart from game.net dudes and head office people? I mean the grass roots slaves like store salesmen and management?

Moreover, are they scared of putting there 2 penneth in cos game can see your IP address, (the 'IP: logged bit) therefore knowing what PC you are on therefore knowing where you live, therefore getting sacked for daring to critisise or comment on the giant Leviathan that is GAME?

I now have taken time to read a large part of the "get it of your chest thread" and i have to say jeeeeez some of you guys are pissed off! I didnt know Game has made such an (allegedly) balls up of it! I have seen alot of IDs cropping up time and again with a sentiment that Barrysworld was nice and cosy as it was. Why didnt they just continue calling it barrysworld and charge for it?

I suppose it was like renaming 'marathon' to 'snickers'. it really wasnt neccesary was it? thats the impression im getting.
