Nope, and can we not merge this thread mods? The readon they keep appearing is because they keep getting merged!

Game are nice for the xmas shopping mums, but thats it, ovetpriced and far too large overheads; their own fault for opening too many stores instead of focusing online.

Feel sorry for the staff though, will not be fun for them finding work.

have like at least one game store and a gamestation in each town near me .. and in Reading theres two games stores and they closed the gamstation .. seems silly to compete with themselves ..

They will go into administration .. im guessing someone will buy them but close down like half the stores and actually make it a decent chain with prices competing on line .. otherwise they will all go

I guess I should use up my Game points then.
Edit: Oh apparently I don't have any anymore. What.

Ah they gave me £30 quid back as a gesture of goodwill. Neat! I'll buy Mass Effect 3 then.
As you were.

Edit: What.

How it's all gone downhill for them since they spent however many millions on and then ruining Barryworld.

400 grand. For the assets of a company already in liquidation. BW made more money under Game than it ever did on its own, and invested more sensibly. I totally agree that GAME made a massive strategic error closing it all down (well I would, wouldn't I?) but as I said on the other thread, its all a matter of perspective; the people who made the decision to can Game.net are all long gone, have all made a shitload of money (don't forget the historic high shareprice for GAME came 3-4 years after online was shut down) and have left other people holding the baby, so from their perspective, job done.

And in reality it wasn't the closure of game.net where the rot set in, it was the ridiculous purchase of Gamestation. They did it as a spoiler to stop Gamestop coming into the UK market, but were left with huge over-saturation of their UK store portfolio, which was probably too big even when I was there. The thing is, Gamestop would only have ever been a short-term threat, because they are going to face exactly the same issues as GAME in the long run (their current advantage is they are debt free, and the costs of retail in the US are lower). Gamestop may be the biggest now, and may have invested more in digital lately (although from an outside perspective it still looks a bit half-arsed; that's what's so frustrating, the game.net plan was so much cleverer) but there simply isn't a long-term future for any media products company in physical retail. Its just a matter of time.

Didn't they also buy Electronics Boutique a few years ago too? I seem to remember that they changed to Game shops which resulted in most towns having 2 game shops and a gamestation.

For a long time we had 2 of each in town for some peculiar reason, no idea if they are all still there. Even back then when I was younger and the internet was slow and crap I would still rather go to the smaller indi games shop, sadly that went bust a few years ago but had gone their since they ran a market stall.

Other way around, EB bought GAME, then EB UK split from EB US and rebranded the whole thing as GAME (for a lot of good and proper reasons). EB US was subsequently bought out by Gamestop. They did end up with a lot of two-three GAME's per town as a result of the rebrand, and there was a bit of an ongoing rationalisation of stores right up until they bought GameStation and then the whole process started again.

The problem is, you can't just close stores at will because of lease penalties. The other problem is that GameStation stores were always considered by the original GAME management to be "off-prime", which didn't fit with GAME's store strategy which was to always be "on-prime", because that was the best way of generating footfall from the largest audience (when EB first launched they never needed to bother with TV ads for years, because the location of the shops did all the work).

Problem now is they have really expensive on-prime rents for GAME but they can't get out of the leases, or even sell them on because all of retail is weak, and even worse off-prime GS leases that no-one wants because of oversupply of prime leases. But the management knew this. They'd passed on Gamestation a couple of times before they eventually bought it because they knew it would give them too many stores in the wrong place, but they were scared of Gamestop.

Cleared out my Gamestation credit this lunch. Getting quite hard as there's not a lot of stock left.

I did pop into the Croydon over the weekend and it had absolutely nothing of interest. This saddened me because I was hoping for cheap used Gears of War / God of War.

This thread is such a cluster fuck. Hard to tell what's its purpose. Games demise or people on here losing their jobs
