Sorry to hear it, but I think with GAME you must have known it's been a long time coming. I'm sure you'll walk into your choice of jobs.
Chet,

I am looking upon this as a good thing, I have several months worth of wedge to find a job where I am challenged and pushed. I might even contract, my Company is setup (albiet without a Business bank account at the mo). If I am being completely honest, the thought that seems to cross my mind, and has done for the last few months is "Titanic". If not that there has to be a major restructure in the Company, in my personal opinion the rot started years ago when we were told that there was no future in online (read around the same time that GAME Digital did drastic things).

Statutory? Those fucking cunts.
Cunt. Yes, the barest minimum, like you just after a shower and still dripping wet. (God that is exciting me). Anyway, I shall be forwarded my CV and expect you to receive and forward a copy onto the relevant people.

Sorry to hear that Deebs :(

On the legal side how much notice have you been given and has their been employee consultation over the redundancies (I'm assuming theres no trade union at your workplace?).

Also have their been any other redundancies recently at this site or are others proposed?

We are in a 4-5 week consultation period. 46 of us are going to lose our roles. We have until Thursday this week (fucking joke) to decide whether we want to excercise our individual or collective right for representation. As of now I still do not know who is at "risk" or not.

Sounds like a shitter, hope you'll find better elsewhere.

Remember Deebs the Japanese word for redundancy is the same as opportunity..or is it u fuckered?
It's bad but when you reach deeper down inside yourself, you'll find a part of you with get up and go, the part you've had in hibernation for years..pep talk over..see yourself out.
I all else fails, watch Limitless, that movie is like cocaine to the 'have it' gland.

GAME has decided to layoff around 46 people at its Support Centre (not called Head Office anymore) today. I am one of them.

To be honest, I view it as a kick up the arse to finally move onto something different, better and more challenging after 11 years of shaping the infrastructure.

Shit, what a fucker, sorry to hear that fella

Sorry to hear about the redundancy. By the way you don't need a 'Business bank account' just a separate bank account if you are a sole trader. From what I've seen Business accounts just seem to cost more but I've been told you do need one if you are VAT registered or a limited company.

Anyway, I think GAME have been very slow to react to the changing market and now it may be too late with Steam, etc. already entrenched in the download market. I think they should have stuck with Game.net and developed other online services, it may have been loss making but sometimes you have to stick with things in order to gain a big future market share in an emerging market, take Amazon and Sky for example who made year after year of losses and now are huge.

To be honest I don't know anything about GAME Digital so I don't know what they've done wrong.

Sorry to hear that T.
It's been my experience that such enforced changes are ultimately a force for good in the long term. Often difficult to see at the time though.

That sucks the big one m8. Seems it's happening all over the place. Last place I contracted at is losing 25% of it's 2000-strong workforce.

Get yourself contracting. Travel may suck but you'll experience a load of different environments which may give you an idea of what you fancy doing in the long term.

Plus, you'll kick ass at it :)

To be honest I don't know anything about GAME Digital so I don't know what they've done wrong.

Basically GAME had all the development staff, infrastructure and industry clout to do Steam before Steam even existed. But instead of doing what a lot of the Digital division people were telling them to get into they said "forget about online, we ship boxes" and moved the staff to different departments.

I bet they love hindsight there ;)
Anyway, best of luck Deebs - I won't go into too much sentimental dribble, we all know how motivated you are so it's unlikely you'll be sitting on your arse for long. I'd keep my eyes open for you but I know next to bugger all in London :(

Most of the people who made the decision to can the digital strategy have also left since (usually weighed down with share option cash), so probably not, unless they read my occasional rants about it...

Sorry to hear that Deebs, it's never nice to be made redundant. Chin up though, like you say it can may well be a well needed kick up the arse to do something different...I know it was for me.

It's a bit cuntish with the statutory redundancy though :(
