I can't see how it will survive as a tech shop either.

Unless it somehow strikes upon the next big iPad killing thing with the next generation it's got no chance.

I mean it'd be pretty cool to go into HMV and go "here are my CD's I hand them to you now along with the money to purchase el device fantastico, NOW FUCKING LOAD ON ALL MY MUSIC QUICK SMART YOU LITTLE OIK!" and walk out with said device containing entire music library, but it ain't there.

Habitat can only fail due to bad business management rather than general trading conditions. People always need crockery sets, pillow covers and lamps. Not everyone wants to mix with the plebs in Ikea or Argos either. Kind of like the M&S food or Waitrose strategy - price the cunts out of the shop so the rich people dont have to mingle :p

Habitat has one problem and one problem only, not enough differentiation from IKEA. Design-wise they are far too close in style.

I always go to M&S for my towels, bedding etc, and thier food has got better again. As for music, i download what i need than buy a actual CD. I did buy some CD's for christmas presents this year and got them from Tesco's for £8.99 ish. The last time i went into HMV (going back a few years) they were selling CD's for £14.99 when Amazon were doing them at less than a tenner

My last few PS3 games have been bought from Amazon, simply because i don't get time to go into town and browse round shops.

Practically everything I buy which isn't grocerys comes from Amazon now. Amazon Prime membership at £49 for the year means free next day delivery for everything. Even something costing 99p. Last week I bought 3 items, some perfume for the Mrs, a book about veggie gardening, and a power tool to replace a broken one at my business. Even last year, I'd have got the Perfume at Debenhams, the book from Waterstones, and the tool on account from a local ironmongers we use.

I'll even buy a pack of AA batteries from Amazon now.

High Street, and even out of town retail is dead to me now.

I totally agree about amazon. Prime is awesome. I fully expect them to take over the world. We'll find stuff to buy on google and buy it on amazon.

Not bought anything from a high street shop in at least a year. Most items are from Amazon or specialist websites. Camping gear from Lakeland Bushcraft, PC stuff from Ebuyer. Even did all our Christmas shopping on Amazon. Half an hour spent online vs hours upon hours of queuing and fucking about in town...easy choice.

I do still buy most meat from a local butcher though, a couple of villages over, otherwise its generally online delivery or a quick trip to out of town supermarkets.

The wife likes to go clothes shopping but that's different.

The sheer amount of stuff you can buy on Amazon is incredible. Just recently I've bought a paper guillotine, an SSD, printer ink\paper, a very old manual for an even older tractor and any number of books. Some of the stuff came from 3rd party sellers but still, it's impressive.

While I think the 3rd party sellers is a good thing for them, and Amazon of course, I do find it annoying that they are exempt from the free Prime delivery option.

Agree but I expect it would be an absolute nightmare to set it up across the board.

Habitat is still going now, at least now it's part of Argos/Home Retail. If i recall from their bulletin though i think there is only one single store open now, will have to check up in a bit.

nice Freudian slip there :)

They have been bought out of administration now so they've done better than most of the other companies mentioned in this thread.

Yes I saw that (by Alshaya? Interesting company - arabs doing something sensible with their money), although only partly from what I read.

Blacks too.

I have been in blacks twice and I am a camping and outdoor "enthusiast" The place is a joke, it is pretty much twice as expensive in there than online and their own brand stuff is terrible quality. I think they are trying to cater for the once a year crowd. The problem is that all they need is a tent and a sleeping bag and they are set up for years of camping.

Very little, if any repeated business.

...and unlike most shops of Millets, the Blacks stores are tiny and so have no tents on display you can see pitched up, which is a massive flaw.

I like to shop in Tisos. Fairly expensive but good gear and well presented.

Anyone know how Monsoon/ Accessorize is doing? Worked for them for 10 years before kids -but, as is the nature of retail, all my mates have moved on -wondered how they are doing in the economic climate.

GAME has decided to layoff around 46 people at its Support Centre (not called Head Office anymore) today. I am one of them.

To be honest, I view it as a kick up the arse to finally move onto something different, better and more challenging after 11 years of shaping the infrastructure.

Sorry to hear that mate. Hope you are at least being given a reasonable redundancy to give you time to look for something different. Can't say I'm surprised by the move as the results I've been reading from Game seem pretty poor so I wonder how much of a future they have!

Sorry to hear it, but I think with GAME you must have known it's been a long time coming. I'm sure you'll walk into your choice of jobs.

Nah they're not - if a third party using amazon to fulfill their deliveries (ie supplier sends 100 dog wanking machines to amazon to ship on) then you can get prime.

It is about time. My skills are being wasted if I am being completely honest with you and myself. As for reasonable, how does statutory fill you in? On the other hand I learnt many things today about those I work with....
