Oddly, I have just had an email from amazon UK asking me if I want to sell my Kindle 2 through their marketplace and if I would like to upgrade to Kindle 3.

Seems second hand cheap Kindles are in demand.

Or Amazon would make some money prodding you into an upgrade...

Probably yeah, but as I said earlier Kindle 3 doesn't bring enough to the table to warrant an upgrade. Hopefully the 4th gen will bring back the SD card slot that K1 had and will have "Epub" compatibility. Hopefully amazon will have developed some simple but fun apps for it by then too. It is just crying out for some decent word games ect. Apparently Kindle 1 owners could play minesweeper for a while by pressing Alt+shift+m, but that was an accident, they forgot to remove it from whichever linux distro it was running lol.

Currently reading The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart really was unsure of it at first, but its turning out to be a great book once you get through the opening scenes. It's a bit like Eli Roth digesting and vomiting out the collected Grimm fairy tales.

Also reading the MS training books for the Exchange MCITP exams, these are somewhat less riveting.

I had a note through the Kindle Dev program a few weeks ago, apparently the Kindle 2 gets the webkit browser in an update pre- xmas. TBH, not something I use too often, but it is nice to be able to look things up when you are reading. WHat would be nice is if they would change the dictionary (again VERY handy feature) on mine to a UK one, but no such luck apparently :)

I'm just looking forward to using it to read blogs and newspapers (online or subs based from amazon). Do you know if there's a way to send a link directly to your Kindle? I don't want to have to type things in constantly, I'd love a Chrome-To-Phone kindle equivalent if there is one.

Ford, is the Kindle screen wipe clean? :)

edit: Just saw the "Reader Recommendations" on that link, first one:

Oviously you can read blogs through the browser, but if the blog is registered through amazon for the kindle you can subscribe to it (some are free, others charge a nominal subscription fee) and the latest articles simply appear on the kindle in a kindle friendly format.

There is an App called ReKindleIt, I have only had a brief look and it seems to work well - sending webpages to your kindle.

Also if you have large documents, lets say a PDF instruction manual with a hundred pages or so, the Kindle can view it, but the search may not work and it can be a bit slow and cumbersome. You can submit these kinds of documents to Amazon and for a very small charge they will convert them and send them to your kindle. When you get a kindle you get a kindle email address for this type of thing, and you submit it through that I believe.

Like most things these days, when you plug the kindle into your PC it is seen as an external drive, so you can drag and drop documents, music and images onto it.

And yes, the kindle screen is wipe clean. :twak:

It's my fault. :(

The feds are on the way to arrest Deebs right now before whisking him off to Guantanamo Bay for a thorough interrogation with cattle prods and anal probes.

Sorry I won't do it again, well not unless they take Meg in which case I will definately post the link again! :D

LOL, I've just realised what has been edited out. Google search could bring many Gary Glitters here had it not been done!

Have all you 'gamers' read Karen Rose 'Die for Me'? Am half way thro it. Is life copying art or the other way round? Scarily likely to happen. Now you're all going to tell me it already has......

Started reading Sword of Truth as my friend recommended it. Halfway through the first book and I'm smacking myself for listening to said friend in the first place. I never thought I'd find fantasy that rivalled Eragon in terms of being bad, but this not only rivals Eragon, it surpasses it.

It's not only the story, it's the writing itself. It feels.. so rushed, so incoherent. He jumps from one topic to another with seemingly no connection between them. You have no real feel for any of the areas or people you meet, the character building is laughable. I mean, I've seen more of it watching Ninja Turtles on TV. Characters meet for the first time and within 10 minutes they are best friends(this happens twice in the first few chapters), nobody questions anything. They go from one arbitrary state to another in a blink of an eye, with no regrets or second thought.

The characters themself are just totally crap. Kahlan goes from stoic warrior chick to weeping and clinging at least a dozen times every chapter, Richard could probably be replaced by a cardboard cut-out and nobody would notice. The villain would make the Joker go "wtf?" and not in a good way.

Overall I would say it's some of the worst fantasy I've ever read, it's not even bad in an entertaining way(like R.A Salvatore) but just plain bad.

Just started The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest. Have read the trilogy back to back. I tend to plough my own furrow in my reading habits, and didn't read this for a long time because every other bugger on the train seemed to have copy. However, have to admit the books are really, really good. Shame the author never got to see the fruits of his labours and there'll be no more from Lisbeth Salander.

I've not read it, but anything that inspired the simply brilliant TV series is great IMO. The Tv series (Legend of the Seeker) is very tongue in cheek, so maybe that is what is bothering you about the book? It doesn't take itself seriously?

The TV series might be tongue-in-cheek but these books are seriousfantasy, and even if I'm somehow misinterpreting it thats no excuse for the extremly poor writing.

My friend suggested I read the brilliant and epic story of The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb - five chapters in I realise the joke was on me :( Reading the back of shampoo bottles whilst lying in the bath this morning was more of a literary treat...

I'll get started on Magician, instead.

Tis a good read. As is some of his other stuff, however I find his new stuff is all a bit too familiar!

I'm currently reading To Kill a Mocking Bird again. So it turns out that we should be nice to black people. Who knew?

Currently reading Gogol's Dead Souls.

It's good. Like a lot of Russian literature of the time.

Finished 'Cauldron' and 'Red Phoenix' by Larry Bond in the last week or so, both superb examples of military techo-thrillers and very very close to the standard of the legendary 'Red Storm Rising' by Tom Clancy.
