Same for Hitlers War by Turtledove. looks nice but then he tends to write a dozen books about it going into details that are not that interesting.

Actually one of the best he's done for a while. Not sure whether he's going to drag it out though; I notice the sequel is out in the summer, which may mean its the start of a series, but he managed to keep Days of Infamy (alt Pearl Harbor) down to just two books and it was all the better for it.

been looking at it for a while, but is it more short stories in the same universe or something on going?.

Its written from the viewpoint of a reporter travelling around after the event putting together a kind of chronological story of the events from the outbreak through to the end.

The Lies of Locke Lamora. I don't normally read fantasy but I'm really enjoying this so far.

That's another great book. I've gone back and re-read it a couple of times. You want to give Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell a look if you like Faerie Tale, its got the same "dont get messed up in faerie shit" theme.

Baudolino by Umberto Eco. Good in places but his knowledge of Byzantine history is excruciatingly bad, have been trying to fight my way through it for about a year now. I -will- finish it somehow or another. The Name of the Rose it is not.

Reading Richard Morgan, Woken Furies. More potboiler SF. Great fun. Some rather ace ideas wrapped up in hardboiled style writing.

I'm reading that atm too. Tbh I've been reading it for ages. Enjoyed the first two. This one's not bad but I'm not gripped. Be glad when it's over so I can get on with Zima Blue :)

Finished Dostoyevsky's The Idiot, which was bloomin' great. Probably a little over-long though.

A very intelligent look and criticism of society and a number of other things. Not one of his best, but still very good.

Will head onto Kafka's The Castle after I've caught up on my Nat Geos. :D

That was in mid 2006 though. I inherited Alastair Reynolds and Richard Morgan books from my brother. He used to read crappy sci-fi like Star Wars novels so as a compromise I did some research on Amazon to see what was rated as good modern sci-fi and bought those for him. I thought I could read them later and it'd give us something to talk about. Never got the chance to do it :(

john ringo :ninja:

in all fairness while his political views are almost comical extreem "US rules" his books are a good read during a break or even during work.

not sure if its already been quoted, but reading through the Millenium series by Stieg Larsson :

The girl with the dragon tattoo
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

almost finished the second book which is better than the first. Hope the third is better still.

currently reading shamans crossing first book in the soldiers son trilogy by robin hobb, read 2 of the trilogies she wrote (think its a female writer) and they were both excellent this one is shaping up to be the same too.

Patrick Rothfuss - The Name of the Wind

Had a lot to live up to given the reviews it has received, however I can easily say it's the best fantasy book I have read in about 10 years and thats elevating it way above my love for Gemmell, Feist, Canavan and Hobb.

Truly brilliant book and I can only hope the second two of the trilogy come close to it.

I highly recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed any of the above authors!

I struggled with book two of the soldiers son trilogy, I found it went off in a direction that didn't really take my fancy.

That said the live ship traders trilogy and the royal assasin trio were brilliant. The first of her new trilogies is out now also.
