What game got you into online gaming?

Seeing as most of us have played some sort of 'computer game' over the 'internet' at some point, what was the game you started off with?

For me it was Quake2, many an hour wasted on the LineOne Warzone getting fragged over and over until I found out I could use the mouse AND the keyboard! It was downhill from there then I discovered Rocket Arena 2 and the rest is history. I've never found a game that I've really enjoyed/persevered with like Q2. I fancied a bit of Ra2 tonight and fired up ASE and looked for a server and there was only one half populated, filled up soon enough and I've just had a good couple of hours of wholesome fragging fun.

Rose tinted spectacles and all that, but I enjoyed it.

fucking nostalgia.

It's all a bit of a blur really.

It might have been the Tribes demo.........or Jedi Knight. I strongly think it was the tribes demo. For a demo, it had its own expansions, community, maps etc. and rocked majorly (was also really friendly to 56k modems). Only JK and Tribes have really interested me in online gaming (although CS did succeed for a few years)

God. i remember when people with ISDN started playing the demo, was considered the dogs knackers at the time.

Close Combat III got me into online gaming... playing against the AI is/was like stealing candy from a firstgrader.

Oh... and Jane's WWII Fighters. Night after night hanging out in the JCN lobby. *sighs*

Good times.

Quake Dm then Q2 on microsoft zone then aq2 after reading about it in a pc gaming mag.

I have to agree Quake DM was the best Im sure it was about the same time as it was either C&C or diablo and there was Ulitma online as well and it was a mixture of the 3.

Do any of the oldies here rember UkChat on the C&C chat channels ?

Original Quake as well for me, played online on the Ireland servers (off the stomped server listings at that time before Quakespy was solid enough to run right)

Quakeworld was the game that done it for me tho.

Surprised theres no-one so far who got into online gaming via HL.

A crafty game of HLDM on my dads IDSN got me started, then swiftly moved into the CS betas for a couple of years, before it was infested by little obnoxious little shits :(... Although I think that the answer to why noone heres mentioned HL so far :D.

I think it was DooM II that first got me interested when I saw it on a friends computer as he dialed up to play it via a lobby. QuakeWorld was the first game I got into online from my own pc.

Never really liked quake with its shit brown coloured walls, so never really played it online. The main game that pulled me in to online gaming was Quake II DM/CTF and then AQ2 totally sucked me in, some games have come close to AQ2 but none have truely beaten it ;)

I think it was Jedi Knight. Didn't really play it much, but that's the first game I remember playing online.

Then, it was HLDM. That's the one that really did it for me. I remember getting an external diamond Supra Express specifically to play. Never been a game quite like it since.

Hm.. Quake3.

I still remember i used to use my microsoft sidewinder joystick to play it. Back in those days i was scared to use Mouse and Keyboard because it just didnt seem right.

I was quite good too, considering i was shite at aimming properly.

I only relised the errors in my ways (*cough*) when i bought Counterstrike and found that M&K was the only way to go.

Now im playing Diablo2 a helluva lot, just got out of a 6hr or so session with guys i know IRL.. !

Mechwarrior 2 over Kali was the first. Used to love that, playing against Americans with my 14.4k modem and ping over 400. I'd get up at 2am for the clan matches and then go back to bed again afterwards.

Pretty sure I went onto Warcraft 2 over Kali after that. Then the rest is a blur.
