Be very proud to be British Because... Only in Britain... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Britain... do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people >can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Britain... do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a DIET coke.

Only in Britain... do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters.

Only in Britain... do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Britain... do we use answering machines to screen calls and when have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

Only in Britain... are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

NOT TO MENTION...

3 Brits die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.

142 Brits were injured in 1999 by not removing all pins from new shirts.

31 Brits have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.

19 Brits have died in the last 3 years believing that Christmas decorations were chocolate.

British Hospitals reported 4 broken arms last year after cracker pulling accidents.

101 people since 1999 have had broken parts of plastic toys pulled out of the soles of their feet.

18 Brits had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Brits were admitted to A&E in the last two years after opening bottles of beer with their teeth.

Scalextric cars.

it was more the fact that a bank was handing guns and ammo across their counter to customers than the lunacy of the offer itself which had me laughing - at least they had a separate safe for the firearms :|

In the US you can buy a handgun before you can buy a beer.

That's just stupid.

Have you ever tried debating gun laws with a Yank? It's like asking a brick wall to move out of your way.

Dunno about those figures, but the first part of that is a cut and paste from a joke about america (with america replaced with Britain).

The ice rink statement kinda gives it away.

I rather think it is unfair to assume the American "gun laws" are somehow wrong or inferior (not suggesting that's what mank thinks), there is also a great deal of confusion about "gun ownership" and "gun control".

If you really think about it, personal gun ownership is actually advantageous if controlled. In particular I highlight the issue with the high rates of burglary and other crimes of trespass in the UK, where someone can break into your property, pose an obvious threat to you or your family, and happily walk off with your possessions, but if you attempt to "defend" yourself then suddenly you become the criminal.

Even if you try to take preventative measures against burglary, the authorities will try and stop you, it's almost as if the law was designed for the benefit of burglary !

Laughingly, the phrase "an Englishman's home is his castle" is more suitable for Americans, and that is where most of the "gun laws" come into effect - protection of private property.

You can't just go out and shoot people in America, in most cases you can't even use a handgun to defend yourself outside the home, as in the famous case of Bernard Goetz. In most states gun ownership is tightly controlled through licences and instances where guns are used legally are clearly defined, although it varies from state to state.

Whereas death by gunshot is high in America, property crime is lower. I'd be willing to bet most gun deaths are against criminals anyway, and involve unlicenced or illegal weapons.

Gun control doesn't prevent deaths, this country has extreme laws yet we still get our Dunblane and Hungerford. In the past I've often viewed gun ownership as a bad thing and supported the laws restricting them, nowdays, faced with rising property crime and gun possesion amongst criminals, I think those laws need to be revised.

I wouldn't mind keeping a Taser or Mace Spray in the house :)

The Americans I've tried discussing it with think it's perfectly fine to shoot someone dead if they shoot at you first. Personally, I see no reason to legally own a gun (even for hunting, which I'm against) and even less reason to use it. That's why I find gun laws in general in the states slightly odd, and whatever you say they just throw the appropriate bit of the constitution back in your face.

I did qualify the statement, nice of you to remove that part.

I thought that was a well thought out post xane, and one I agree with.

There are other points too... I would have quite liked to go target shooting at some point, which is now something Ill never get to do because of the knee jerk reactions of an idiotic government. Not to mention the biased and irresponsible media. They decided to give the goverment just what it wanted by showing one of the Dunblane victims mothers saying Labour were caring for banning guns. Stupid.

People are far too quick to relinquishing their freedom, and it worries me.

Wanna shoot at targets? Go paintballing
Wanna shoot live ammo? Join the army.

You only have a gun do kill, the only reason why Americans keep guns is because they know everyone else has one.

We have the right laws here, no doubt about it.

Bullshit quite frankly. Just because you dont like it, thats not a good reason to ban people from doing it.

The gun laws were fine before Dunblane.

A ban would have made no difference, no. The guy had 3 guns I think, 2 of which were illegal.

Dunblane has nothing to do with popular opinion that people just don't want guns in this country.
I'm one of that majority who think the law is fine how it is.

Banning guns hasnt done anything though.

Of course guns are bad in the hands of certain people, but usually those people arent gonna apply for a licence to get a gun anyway.

Just because someone has a gun, doesnt mean they are going to use it to go kill innocent people.

As far as i know, gun crimes have increased around where i live, having several shootings already this year, obviously not one of those guns was legal.

All the gun laws have done is mean we lose our olympic shooting teams.

Hurrah, someone with an iota of common sense.

I find it amusing that people take the piss out of the American gun law.

Laugh at them because you feel like your banging you head against a brick wall because they wont hear your opinion that guns might not be so good... Then post equaly ludicrus opinions on your reasons for a total ban such as 'I dont like them', and are even less likely to budge on your POV than the American.
