I don't think Germany has much of a choice; they've binned nuclear and shut their coal mines at the same time, renewables aren't cutting it. They can import coal (they closed the mines but not the power stations...yet) or get gas from...somewhere, but all the choices are bad.

Its funny, we always think of Ze Germans as basically competent people who know what they're doing, but there's a remarkable amount of big, fucked up stuff going on in Germany; their energy policy is broken, their military policy is broken, and apparently loads of their infrastructure is falling to bits as well.
Russia has invested in creating anti nuclear sentiment for decades (in the west) for precisely this reason. They have some EU countries by the balls.

You can probably lay some of this at Russia's door, but the Germans didn't need Soviet/Russian propaganda to kill the reactors after Fukushima; it was a stupid knee-jerk reaction when they didn't have a proven plan B (or C or D). Don't assume conspiracy when good old stupidity will suffice.

I have to deal with Germans regularly and I can confirm they are pretty wishy washy with procedure of any kind.

They didn't need to do any nudging after Fukushima. The groundwork had been laid over decades. Yes, there's plenty of homegrown worriers to feed the fire but pouring bits of petrol on every now and then over decades helps. Things often have multiple causes.

Nuclear has done a pretty fucking good job of showing us how shit and exhorbitantly expensive it can be all on it's own, Russia or not...

The thing is, it's not actually funny. I have little doubt there will be some sort of conflict now. Putin will flood Europe with refugees.

I'm fairly sure the tweet is saying if we do that it will escalate it further, which isn't a good thing, right?
No he's saying the west should start with sanctions against oligarchs now but hold back on pulling Russia from SWIFT because if the sanctions don't make Russia back down then adding a SWIFT-block to it might do. Keep ratcheting up the cost on Putin and cronies bit by bit.

Fuck me. There's a billion ways to transfer value from one place to another.

If you think putting a fucking SWIFT transfer ban on a rich person is even going to make them blink, never mind notice, then you're living in some functional fantasy land.

Not a person. The country.

And it’s not the end of Russia if they do. No one is claiming that. It’s just ratcheting up the pressure. Making life more difficult for big business in Russia which puts pressure on the regime. Another diplomatic tool.

'Optimistic'

We're just setting the scene of "we're doing stuff, honest" for if Russia does invade.
