That's a good point actually, someone should inform him that regardless of what side you play in counterstrike, you're not supposed to kill the hostages. So if we're sticking with the utterly absurd "training" idea, then he would have been trained NOT to kill them as he'd lose money and not be able to buy the M4 and a vest/helmet next round.

You're right, throd. In england we've had one or two crazies running around shooting people and a fair bit of gun crime in the big cities, multiply that up by 10 (to reach roughly the US population) and I rekon it would be behind the US but not a particularly long way.

Education, as always, is the key. Stop people growing up to be fucking idiots and then maybe they wouldnt be :) Also lock up loonies on a nice sunny island where the only people they can harm are themselves.

Exactly. The BBC with thier sactimonious attitude everytime they interview an american really pisses me off.

Whilst doing some research yesterday at college on an entirely unrelated subject, I found a website which suggested the odds of being shot by a firearm are one in two million - the same as being struck by lightning.

I suppose it would apply if you lived in a self-contained vacuum or something.

Sorry but it made me chuckle...

How exactly do you purchase a firearm in the UK? I genuinely have no idea. I'm under the impression that you can go into a high-street shop in the US and walk out with an Army grade firearm without any problems though I'm probably grossly misinformed.

Once I'd voted, it struck me that what's scary is that hardly anyone picked the "More info" option, although this probably makes me a hypocrite.

Yeah but how did you vote G ?

Mank, buying a handgun legally in this country is impossible. Getting a licence for a shotgun took me 13 weeks. To actually have a rifle you must should good need, ie land where you have to shoot, or be a member of a club. Then it still takes months. And unlike shotguns, each rifle has to be sanctioned by the police. And have a good reason for each one. Oh, and you cant have automatics, or even semi-automatic bigger than a bloody .22.

Which is far too much in my opinion!

Oh yeah, in the US in some states like Texas you can buy anything you like so long as your not a felon, but most states has restrictions, and almost all outlaw full auto "assault" rifles.

Hold up - you said you had to have a background and mental health check (or something to that effect) in order to get your shotgun. Ignoring everything else, like the fact that you feel you should be allowed to buy handguns or larger calibre weapons, do you feel the shotgun checks were unnecessary? Do you feel it should have been easier to get one?

Reason I say it, I agree with the principle that laws shouldn't be made as a backlash to an isolated incident - however, as I understand it the gunman in virginia was known to have mental health issues. If this was checked before allowing him to purchase a gun this whole thing might have been avoided. Surely there's no big deal with making it a longer/tougher process to get a firearm over there now.

The nutter who killed those kids in Dunblane was a known nutter. The Police in that instance didn't do their job.

Theres no reason why handguns should be banned. Its stupid. Restrictions on gun ownership are a sensible compromise, and were for years perfectly adequate, despite people getting shot. Only when politicians more concerned with 'doing something' became involved was there a problem.

IMO handguns should be legalised. Its a perfect example of a stupid law that penalises the law abiding, while doing nothing to stop criminals.

Yeah I intentionally steered clear of the whole handgun debate as that's a separate issue really. Basically my point is, shouldn't it really be as difficult to get a handgun in the states as it is to get a shotgun in the UK? With the possible exception that self-defence is a valid reason for owning one.

Its a different thing in the states, where they have 10 times as many people as us, and god knows how many times more guns.
Frankly I think the shotgun rules are more than enough to cover rifles or handguns for this country, however as we all know succesive governments have played the bullshit card by continuing to ban them, even though deaths by illegal pistols have continued to rise.
Im checked for my mental state by the police via a reference to my doctor, and I dont really have a problem with that. After all, Im not (that) mental :)
Also to be honest, shotguns are ideal for this part of the country (the south east) because of the ever decreasing amount of space available to us (dont start me off on that one!) , as a shotty is very powerful but only for a fairly short range, so no chance of overshoot. A .308 (7.62) Styer or something needs a fucking good backstop in order to avoid any problems.
I think also that we (well some of us) have been conditioned by the state and the bloody BBC to have an in-built terror of the sight of a gun, which I believe to be quite unhealthy.
Last thing, if they finally un-ban pistols I will get one in a shot, because I should be allowed one anyway. The law is bollocks :(

Aside from the civil liberties issue, which I agree with you on, if you did a poll of the entire country you'd find that the vast majority of people in this country are happier that guns aren't widely available.

The fact of the matter is, when guns are around more people get shot. It's not malicious, accidents happen. Crimes of passion etc. Yes, they're all wankers - but we don't have that problem in this country and we don't need it IMHO.

Having said that I'd love to be able to just pick up a gun and go hunting. But it's pointless anyway as there's no real countryside left :(

I have moved this to the Half Life forum because I am a bit drunk. It will soon be back into general when a super mod sorts it.

Sorry people, Lesters fault tbh.

You didn't answer my question though throd - don't you think it would be reasonable if in the states they had similar restrictions on guns as they do here. Not banning handguns out right, but I mean mental health checks etc. before someone is allowed to get hold of one. Sure it's speculation but it's entirely possible that if mental health checks were done on the gunman before he was sold the firearms, this may have been avoided.

It's also possible that if Old Boy or Counter-strike were never made, he wouldn't have killed all those people, but I think any reasonable person would acknowledge that stricter gun control (I don't mean banning) is a much more sensible course of action than censoring material.

Are they blaming Old Boy now?

They will blame whatever they like, far easier than actually facing the problem. cant send troops into it so it must be <insert media format> that is responsible.

With the greatest respect in the world, please dont link me to some dopey page on Wikipedia as if it is the answer to life the universe and everything.

Nath - I dont claim to know the answers to other countrys problems , Im not even sure I know the answers to mine.
Who the hell are we to sit here pontificating about a country thousands of miles away that we dont live in thats on a scale of size we can hardly comprehend?
Like I said, lots of states have far more gun laws than you know.Theres so many guns out there, its true to say that if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Just the same as it is here.
I know that in the states they fight hard to defend thier rights to own guns, and on the whole I think I instinctively agree with them.

Simply pointing out that "that's bollocks" is incredibly dismissive and that people have actually performed studies on that subject to other conclusions.
The study that that paragraph references is here if you're even remotely interested in actually looking into the issue.
