Hello uni goers (and I know there are a few of you heheh), what do you think of this? Reading it quickly, I'm quite inclined to find for the university, but as you are all living it atm I'd like to hear your thoughts on the news snippet (and perhaps on cutting corners in general). Are you aware of cheating/re-using material et al. Does your uni activly do anything about it? Do tell :)

I've recently finished and I'm finding it hard to give a shit about him. He said he had no idea it was wrong, I'd be suprised if that's not a complete lie.

How sad am I? When I first read the title, my first thought was of the little fellow in Dungeons and Dragons.

:(

Anyway, that's my university, and if he thinks he can honestly say that I Dun Know It Were Bad To Plagerizism then he's obviously not intelligent enough to pass his degree without cheating anyway. With every piece of coursework you hand in you sign a form to state it is all your own work, it's in the student handbook you get every year, it's discussed at the beginning of university... It's just the act of desperation of someone who's been rumbled. And tough tittie I say.

ah, goodies, I was getting a bit worried there for a second. I can remember getting all kinds of grief for not always naming sources of information and screwing references up, but I never used anyone's work as my own.

Ignorance can't be an excuse about what is right or wrong. You are deemed to know the rules/laws that are in place. Its not up to the Uni to keep telling the people about this info...

He's a complete idiot and I have no sympathy for him.

UMIST are certainly very thorough at making sure we're clear on plaigarism. The guy in the story is talking utter bollocks, or hasn't been to any lectures to hear the warnings. Even then, there would be written documentation making clear that it was unacceptable.

For written work we're expected to provide bibliography etc., while any code that we have to hand in that uses code from another source has to clearly mark the code block in question, credit the author, link to license etc.

Since I studied in ukc I can say with confidence that they dont give a rats ass about cheating or plagiarism. At least in the electronics, computer and math departments. Those wackos in there couldnt even remember what they had for lunch an hour ago, let alone remember if someone plagiarised. That guy must have done something incredibly dumb to get caught.

Catsby believes that this student was caught by a piece of software that has been on the market for a little while. Catsby is led to believe that it scans known work, and the intraweb for similar paragraphs/phrases, and reports matchs to the marker.
Catsby believes it is clever software, and somewhat retarded studend situation.

Catsby also recalls having to sign umpteen "I will not copy others works, and if I do I shall be hung by my scrotum from the tallest tree, and pelted with seven day old human excrement" forms.

Catsby now thinks signing such a document without reading it could result in an unpleasant fate.

That annoying little scrote stopped them going home so many times. They should've spit-roasted him (either way tbh) and buggered off.

i got caught plagarising 3 times in the lower years of high school, mainly because i was a lazy bum and diddnt bother editing it to remove key phrases such as "this site will" or "as a student in america" or other dead giveaways. But I just said it was research and i was giving other people's opinions, I diddnt know we had to give our own opinions....

suckers

B+ all the way baby

What a retard, he couldn't honestly expect to get a degree using other peoples work.
All work submitted at my university has a general statement saying sources have to be named and plagiarism will be punished (although that depends on who is marking I would think).
If he's too thick to rearrange the words, what is he doing at university? Over three years too? He was probably taking the piss with it as well.

Every assignment I have taken at Kent has had a warning about plagerism, and the student handbook as damini said does have all the warnings about plagerism. There really is no excuse for not knowing about it.

If the case were that the university had found him cheating in the first/second year, but did nothing about it, and failed him for it in the third year, then I would find in favour of the student, a year/2 years is a long time to have wasted someones life. However thats not the case here.

If someone has been trying to get a degree by handing in other peoples work over three years they deserve to have their time and money wasted, even if the university knew they were cheating in the first year. :)
