Suprised how much money is about for students, really don't get what all the riots were about. Going Southampton uni this Sept, I'll get loans (which I pay back at 9% on whatever I earn above 21k per year after 2016) I only pay 6k per year rather than 9k and I get £3575 per year maintenence loan.

So that's £28725 over 3 years in loans (which say I start on 30k per year I only pay back £810 per YEAR) on top of that I get £1,250 per year in bursaries from the uni and £300 per year in vouchers for social/cultural stuff and £3650 grant per year, all non-repayable; £5200 pre year free monies.

So when I leave uni, I'll of had a 9k discount and I'll be £28,725 in debt, out of which £10,725 is cash given to me anyway. Of that remaining 18k I owe, £15,600 of it is given as grants ect any way. So my education will realistically only of cost me £2400.

Also with my Job I'll earn about 7k a year tax free, so with all loans, grants, bursaries etc. I'll be taking home about £1300 per month......... that's more than I ever got working.

Start on 30k a year lol.
I'd be disapointed not to :), one of my mates is just finishing his last year at Surrey and he's already got a job with BP for sept, 46k per year starting salary .........

I'm doing accountancy so as long as I get a post grad job at a decent firm 30k isn't unrealistic

This is why I don't get the current student moan.

Without details. In 1992 when I wanted to go to Uni I had £600 per year available to me. For accomodation, food, books, everything.

So clearly I didn't go.

Never had it so good springs to mind.

My ex did 2 degrees, social sciences at Durham where the average grad wage is 40k and speech therapy at UCL where the average grad wage is 45k.

She currently earn 26k as an accounts manager for a pharmaceutical firm.

Average wages for grad students are just that, the average, and even then they are often fabricated.

*edit* Good luck and all that, I'm not being a cunt. I really wish you all the best. Just dont believe everything you read. Especially if Wij wrote it.

Tbh there's no risk, i left a job I hated and was getting likt 17k at, wrost case scenario I end up in a simular job after having 4 years of bumming around, and don't have to pay the loan back......

Obviously that's not anything I'd even contemplate as a plan. But what I mean is I've nothing to lose out of it. Aslong as I get a first or a 1:2 then it should be fine, I'd be fucked off to get anything less than that tbh.

You're in for a big surprise.

I'd go with rude awakening......

Unless you do a highly specialised degreee that not many other buggers are doing then you're in with a whole bunch of other people and then market forces apply. IT, Law, Accountancy all suffer from this (people see supposed big wages at the end of it and think that'll do). In addition all those 3 require further study post degree before you see decent pennies. I'm sure that there are other degrees in the same boat.

You'd be better off doing some weird arsed degree that not many others do. Higher chance of a well paying job at the end of it. Unless your weird arsed degree happens to be the Sociology of Boy Band fans - something like mechanical engineering or study of ocean floors or geology or some such I reckon.

not that many, it's the first year of the 9k cap and apparently ucas applications are down 25%, I applied for 5 uni's and got accepted to all 5 so I don't think it's as competetive this year as it has been in the past, could work out really well in that respect

They do a great Geology course at Southampton Uni - just saying... ;)

Jobs afterward are down to initiative and where you live - is there a work placement as part of your degree? (sandwich course)

A decent placement can really set you up - otherwise make sure you work the summers in decent (possibly unpaid) placements for the big accountancy firms.

You'll still be piling into an already over-supplied graduate market.

I don't want to be a downer, but don't go into this with rose-tinted glasses on. If you have 5 places, choose the best uni - not course, uni. And if your best offer isn't a red brick as a minimum, honestly don't bother; PWC and KPMG etc aren't even bothering with applicants from "lesser" colleges these days, they don't need to.

Nb I don't know what graduate trainees are on but I would be very surprised if it was 30k. It does ramp quickly from what I remember, but they whinnow out a lot of people in year one.

Also, without trying to sound like a dick as far as possible, there is a huge difference in perception between a first and a 2:1. Every man and his dog has a 2:1. A first should be the very least you aim for if you want to get into that bracket of earning 40k+ as you state.

Best of luck with it all either way, but the working world is a tough one. Speaking from experience, I know full well my skills and experience should in theory be able to command upwards of £30k per year in my field, but I had to settle for a job at £20k because that's simply the reality of the job market right now.

And a suicide attempt after 5 years, divorce after 7 and stress-related disability after 10.

I'd go for something less stressful. Like mine-clearance.

My old man has been an atc for 30 years and he is fine! (minus the divorce bit)

You won't walk into 30k, the market is saturated. This is the problem with "the yoof" of today, they expect too much.

Also, I hope you don't spell like that on your CV, it won't make it out of HR if you do.

I'm not yooooth

I'll be 29 by the time I leave uni, and I've never been able to spell or write xD that's what spell check is for ;). Fortunately I'm epically good at maths science and writting style, getting constant distictions in english litt despite piss poor spelling and grammaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Centre of London grad schemes can be in excess of £30k.

The banks still pay very well for grads, but they will be able to pick and choose the best.

What graduate job in accounting are you thinking of? You would be very lucky to get 30k straight out of uni. Perhaps after the ACA (or whatever it is). Getting your foot in the door with a top firm is the hard part.

tbh 30k was just a figure to show how little of the loan you'd pay back even witha decent salary, my only aim is to get a job with one of the big 4, then get chartered through them. but for that realistically I need a first, tho I'd be dissapointed with anything less that a first really.

I'll ask Vae to put something on here when he gets home...he'll be able to give you some advice regarding accounting, the top 4 firms and actually how its all a bunch of rubbish. Accountancy firms actually seem to go for people who HAVEN'T done accounting at Uni......

I started on 26k and am now on more than double that only a few years later (same company). If you're decent and can play the game then there's no reason you can't make as much money as you want/need.

If it's a good course and you're clever, just get on with it. Yes, there's loads of accountants but there's a reason: there's a shitload of firms and people who need them to do their books and so on.
