For all the potential world changing effects of the Ukraine crisis it all seems to be happening on a small scale...the Ukranian army in the news were just a handful in an armed troop carrier being stopped by about 50 protestors.
It was all very civilised actually.

Dunno. Didn't stop around long enough for the inevitable riot to start. Which it did.

Didn't make the news tho...

So it probably didn't. Fuckwits confront the police all the time; doesn't really matter if its Pakistanis, chavs or "travellers", the fuzz don't usually let it stop them and it doesn't mean the end of society.

I doubt very much they got their man that evening. A garage and a few cars were set on fire, hundreds turn up, so priorities change...

That was the early days of it when they were attempting to get back to a local airport. In the Donetsk region its turned into an actual shooting battle.

To quote a Ukranian friend...

What happened on the weekend:

1) clashes between pro-russians and (apparently) football fans in Odessa

Resulting in 30 dead

And trade union building being set on fire with people inside

Pro-russian people

2) anti-terror operation in Slavyansk (the city with most pro-russian non-russian forces)

Helicopters, lots of shooting, apparently we're winning but who knows what's really happening

On 11th the Donetsk Peoples Republic (totally-not-russian-backed separatist organization) wants to hold a referendum on separating Donetsk and a few other regions from Ukraine

With 150% acceptance rate they will declare it "the will of the people" {joke about rigged votes}

9th is Victory Day (WWII) and that's supposed to be "fun"

Also, Putin/Moscow seem to be going "Cold War". There was a 2001 agreement between Moscow and Lithuania about the disclosure/inspection of troop number in the Kalingrad region (the bit between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic. Moscow are now refusing to disclose the number to Lithuania per the agreement.

I can't find a non biased source for this atm, but to quote VOA

Russia has suspended a 2001 agreement on mutual military inspections with Lithuania, the defense ministry said on Monday, amid growing worries in the Baltic region over Moscow's assertiveness in Ukraine.

Under their agreement, Lithuania could inspect forces in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland that is the headquarters of the Russian Baltic fleet, while Russia could do likewise with the Lithuanian military.

The three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all former Soviet republics with small military forces, have been warily watching Russia reasserting itself in its former dominions further south.
About half way down.....

And some levity to the thread. This was posted on reddit /r/mapporn. Its built from the various statements Putins used to describe europe over the last year or so in public speeches (and some artistic license)

Holy jesus fucknuts

Russia's armed forces, backed by its nuclear arsenal, were ready to meet any aggression, Mr Putin, declaring at a pro-Kremlin youth camp that foreign states should understand: "It's best not to mess with us."

Hide in the forest.

Yeah, that worked last time and it probably would work this time as well. Kill, hide, kill, hide.

Kind of like 300, except in the millions, in the forest numbers don't mean that much.

I donno if this has been mentioned yet.

But Hot Water and Gas supplies have been turned off around Kiev, only the district heating is now working. There was also notice on Ukranian TV last night that power cuts from 9-11am and 8-11pm were going to possibly start occurring. Most of Ukraine uses Gas fired power stations and coal stations, neither of which Ukraine produces very much of.

I've not seen it on any of the news sites, but this is from my Ukranian friends.

:(

Sucks to be them, it needs sorting out now before it escalates. If that means sending UN peace keepers then so be it. The whole thing has been playing into Putins hands so far. All he is interested in is the shale gas supplies for his mafia mates.

Well, kind of. He wants them for his mates to personally gain from. We want them so we can buy cheap gas from the Ukraine.

So our mates can personally gain from it, just like the Russians - albeit a little less transparently...

I don't want to seem like Russia is in the right, but I can see where Putin is coming from, more Ukranians have fled to Russia than they have to the rest of Ukraine, meaning perhaps that the East does want to be a part of Russia.

I really think this can be dealt diplomatically, but Ukraine will have to drop its pro-European mentality, or split the nation in two.

We really don't need the Lithuanian president basically saying that Russia is invading Europe...might be sort of true but are we seriously considering threatening them with war if all else fails...it sounds ridiculous but we will have to...if we allow Putin to steal 1ft of land we might as well give him the lot.

Not really.
Well, the Russians are supporting a group of people that clearly doesn't want to be a part of Ukraine, whilst the Ukranian Government is 'purging' anyone who opposes to the Ukranian Government - IE they're having a 'pure' Ukranian Government and those who don't like it have to deal with it, and they'll have no representation, it's disgusting frankly.

But we don't mind, because Russians are communists, and evil.

I think you'll find the media in Russia being some what under the control of the Kremlin with an attempt to take it totally under control isn't exactly comparable to our medias relationship to the UK government.

No, the Russian Media is controlled directly by the Kremlin, our Media is indirectly controlled by Westminster, if our Media was so free, why do they all say the same thing about things like this, why do they repetitively always go into the same camp like, yup, Anti-Russia, Pro-Europe attitude.

In Russias point of view, what they're doing is helping people who are asking for help, because they don't want to join Europe, they want to be closer to Russia.

In Europes point of view, they're saving a sovereign nation from aggressive invasion from another country.

Infact, it's just a pathetic power struggle so long as countries side with another, it's good for them, at the minute Europe is winning with their creations of democracies across Europe, all the ex-USSR states still operate like USSR states, but they're pseudo-Democracies, so it's good, and they're looking towards Europe, not Russia, so we don't give a shit what the people think.

I find it amazing that when the Pro-Russian Ukrainian Government soldiers were shooting the protesters when all this began, they were deemed criminals, and the Ukrainian Government was pressured to crumbling point by Europe, but the EXACT same group of Soldiers then followed their new Pro-European Governments orders to go to the other side of the country, and start shooting at civilians at that side.

What's the difference? - Peoples politics, the sanctity of life is false, neither side really gives a shit about what happens, so long as they can get a couple more pointers in their favour, its all deemed as collateral damage.

Europe should be saying to Ukraine, hang on, you can't do a cleansing of one million of your people, because they simply do not believe in the same politics as you, this is not moving forward, this is moving backwards.

As I say before, all the ex-USSR nations are the same, I have a friend from Poland, and he was saying his Dad lost his job, which wasn't even a public job, it was private, but because the new Mayor didn't like his Dads political stance, he decided to pressure the boss to remove him, so he did.

Ok. Just a thought, Russia is quiet spacious so why don't these fuckers that wants to be with Russia just take a hike over the border and then shut the fuck up. But noo, they need to be fucking murderous dicks about it. I mean, its riiight fucking there, close and all, Russia wouldn't mind. /Rant off.
