So America has gone over to improve their sphere of influence by offering a billion dollars, way to 'defuse' the situation.

Nice wording with the "as a subject of the Russian Federation" there.

Ah bollocks. I reckon the majority of people in Crimea would happily join Russia.

All this episode does is show that the very concept of countries/borders/states is utter made up opportunistic bullshit.

I wish we (as in NATO or whoever) would man up and say 'ok Crimea can join Russia again but none of your ships are allowed through Turkish waters, or you could just let Ukraine govern itself'

The UN needs to make a stance, it can't keep going 'aww yeah but, no but' it's showing weaknesses and therefore its useless.

They need to say 'Leave the Ukraine, make your pro-russian, non russian dudes stand down, we'll send some troops in to keep the peace, and we'll hold a completely legitimate referendum in 3 months time, if there's any major organised use of bullying or black-mailing for either causes then we'll reset the time by another 3 months, refusal will result in the UN being pro-Ukranian, and any change of the nature of the Crimean Peninsular will not be recognised by the members of the Untied Nations.'

The UN has to do what is right, and if the people of the Crimea want to join Russia, then they should be able to do so, but not whilst there's a huge armed presence bullying them into it.

They're not tho. It's pretty clear that in a free and fair election Crimea would go ruski in a second.

The UN is there to clean up afterwards, not enforce global military policy btw.

Actually I doubt it. Young people are overwhelmingly against going to Russia even if they speak Russian. The state media in Crimea is now showing Russian propaganda. No one should recognise this vote.

Yeah, as Wij said, I think there's a lot out there that don't want to be Russian, the 'Crimean' government said they'd get 75% of people saying yes, so lets relieve the pressure to make it 'more' democratic, and see how truthful that figure is.

Meh, @Wij & @Gwadien, it's all bullshit anyway and in 50 years nobody will give a flying fuck. Hopefully we'll be completely borderless across the planet by then and we can ditch all this nationalistic bullshit.

I'm more concerned that the UK and US are running as quick as they can to the far right...

A lot of pro Russian people there wouldn't see the west coming in and interfering as making it 'more democratic' lol. Nothing good would come of it
