ok imo yes it wasn't ideal that gideon revealed his name when brannor didnt really want anyone to know but what layl did was pretty damn serious as was said before just because it revolves around a game doesn't mean he couldnt have accessed far more serious things (bank details etc).. and the way it was done from what i heard on first post was specifically done to get brannor banned or at least make him very unpopular so naming and shaming layl isn't the worsed thing to do.. and take an example from rvr or something people name and shame others for xp killing them .. this is alot more serious and imo banning his account wasn't enough punishment but not alot more goa can do and im sure if brannor wanted to he could take legal action or summink whole things over now no need to talk more about it :)
also would be nice if layl showed any sign of remorse.. kinda creepy he just finds it amusing hehe :D

blablabla

This is turning out to be flamefest2k2 again with everyone saying the same thing over and over again. The info had leaked out sooner or later anyhow.

lock this allready

ps : have you people ever used an irc client?
*** Joins: x (ident@xxxxxx.xxx.xxx)

irc has dns routines in the protocol so with every decent irc client "numeric" ips are within the range of one command.

you don't need to give out your ip...

I don´t think it was wrong naming the hacker here, hacking into someone´s comp is as braking in to someone´s house, and you think a fair punishment for this is to have his account deleted!!

OMG it´s a crime, im suprised why this wasn´t a matter of the police, it dosen´t matter if he just played on Brannor´s account he broke into his computer and stole personal info...........

At least slam him in the head with the nerf bat

I can't believe I missed this earlier but I'm amazed at what's being said!

Selective Quotes By Lochlyessa
Gideon, did you really have to do that? I admit, kr0n hacking brannor was stupid, out of order and generally illegal, but do you have the right to stick your nose in and tell everyone, even when brannor wasn't going to? That's remarkably judgemental imo, since the only reason you knew was cos kr0n told you.

You say its pathetic that he hasn't apologised- don't you think it's also a leetle bit pathetic interfering in other peoples business? This didn't affect you one little bit, and yet you first told Brannor, then you told everyone.

Gideon didn't really have any justification for telling everyone that it was kr0n, apart from 'omg he did something bad, but i'm oh so good so i'll tell everyone'.

What gives you that right?.

erm, this?

Loch, I don't see why you're sticking up for Kron. To play down his actions and shift the blame to Gideon is silly, to say the least. You might be forgetting whose integrity is at question here... I'll give you a clue, it's not Gideons.

Now I've never grouped with Gideon and have little love for the man(anyone responsible for sotl should be sold to Trolls :p ), but I do respect him as a GM. He put in a lot of effort to make the guild work and if he hadn't been there, sotl would have fallen a long time ago. As I recall, it very nearly did collapse when Gideon went AWOL after the first couple months of DAoC going live. But he came back and the guild survived. Simply by being in the guild, you owe him more then you do to kron. It's players like kron who helped to give sotl it's 'leetist assholes' image.

Don't you think someone who formed the most successfull guild(RP wise), has some sentimental feelings towards it? Even a sense of duty to the other players on the server?

You're soo happy about being in the bestest guild in Prydwen, that you've forgotten whose guild it is. To me and many others, sotl will always be Gideon's guild. It doesn't matter that he's quit playing. Again, for myself and others, Gideon was always the one to recruit players according to levels, not attitudes.

I just don't see why Gideon should turn a private matter into a public one.

This became a public matter the moment Glauthingy appeared in Camelot Hills. We've all been exploited in some way and we all have a right to know who was behind it.

If you cannot accept your friend's account being deleted, then seek some private therapy. You'll get no sympathy here.

imo- Gideon did what he did out of a sense of duty. Not to shame kron, who does a good job of that himself.

FAO: Brannor. I'm curious, how did kron managed to gain access to your PC?
As I understand it, you would have needed to execute a trojan on your PC which was sent by kron, was this the case?

I feel pretty sorry for Glauthrong here...he's the one who has had to deal with all the shit thrown at him, hes the one with a mark on his account after doing 0 wrong and hes the victim of what is after all a crime, but from what I can see, he's the only "main player" in this little soap opera who has maintained his dignity throughout.

If I wasnt so damn tired I'd spout a bit but I cant be arsed.

Tbh, imo anyone who gives out their IP address without having sufficient protection is kinda stupid anyway, and prolly deserves to be hacked :(

but again, this is just my opinion, feel free to flame me for it.

doesnt seem as though brannor minds that gideon named the hacker, and i think it was right he let the public know about this because this is a public forum after all.

I guess Lochylessa wanted to be advocatus diaboli and it kind of backfired...

I don't understand the motive - but I don't hold it against him/her.

Blimey, can't believe I missed this thread! /respect to Revz/Gideon for naming. To my mind he's named as GOA's policy on this whole thing sucks ass.

Would say more but I don't want my account hacked and a marker put against *my* name by GOA.

/em slips Wels some catapult stones from DC on the sly.

Theres nowt wrong with loch's stance though, telling someone in confidence that you've done something (and you've already been punished by relevant authorities) and having that blabbed isn't too nice. Say you goto jail for a couple of years for something you did, few years later, you tell a new friend about it, then he blabs it to everyone he knows. Wow thanks "friend".

Daft thing is without Lochy's post it would have been nothing but 'supposition' and 'rumour'.

Like I said above though, the main problem (well, apart from the criminal activity..) is with GOA's handling of the whole affair which stinks to high heaven, and is very much highlighted by Revz post.

TBH that's the only action GOA can take. I'm sure it says in the agreement that you take FULL responsibility for your account, and that also means security of your account. Otherwise you just get the "it was my brother wallhax0ring on teh server unban me plz" kinda problems. And when people say not everyone knows how to protect their computer, but as lunar says, "Thats the same as breaking into someones house and taking their personal belongings." and everyone makes sure their home is secure right?

Its really as criminal matter which brannor should take up with the police or whomever deals with internet crime these days (probably nothing comes of anything you report anyway tho :( ), its would not really GOAs place to ban the account of the offender if he had just hacked brannor, as the illegal actions wouldn't have gone via layl's account at all. Although I guess they can ban layl as he was using unauthorised access to the servers.

Rebanning different accounts over and over is pretty pointless, just sign up under a different name and borrow a friend/relatives cc.

IRC servers can obscure people's IPs if they want to. There's nothing in the protocol that says the server has to tell you what anyone's IP is, it's just convienient to do so for authentication purposes.

I didnt say that servers need to make ip's visible to users, but only that the protocol has dns routines ( which resolve the "alphanumeric" to a strctly numeric ip or vice versa)

Nothing in the irc protocol about dns routines. Most clients happen to include it though as it's quite handy. Not like it's hard to do a host lookup on a hostname though, windows has a tool for it. :p

/SALUTE Gideon

Brannor was wronged and took alot of shit off people over this when his character was seen in Camelot Hills. People tried to turn him into the bad guy even though he protested his innocence, now the truth is out are those same people going to apologise? Are they now going to call for Layl's head on a plate like they did to Brannor? Not likely, they have all gone very quiet now that the oppurtunity to flame Brannor has gone which is what most of it was really about anyway, some people just don't like the guy and took this as an oppurtunity to blacken the guys name. Well Brannor has come out of this smelling of roses and the flamers luck like a bunch of cunts.

Gideon has gone up in my estimation hugely after this, people who cheat/hack/commit crimes deserve to be named and shamed fullstop, Layl's friends can support Layl and I don't have a problem with that as friends should stick together through good and bad. Gideon made up for GOA's shit policy on action against people breaking the CoC by telling the TRUTH. What his motivations were don't make a damn bit of difference to me, we were exploited by these actions on Brannors account and Gideon made damn sure that we all know who the real exploiter is. As I said before, that act earns my complete respect.

As for Layl, difficult to find something to say whilst staying diplomatic. GOA has banned Layl's account but the account didn't commit the crime, Layl did . Layl is known to have at least one more account, people on these forums know the names of his/her alts on other servers so if GOA find out the details do they ban those too?

Everyone seems to have left out the most important point here ;

Layl is capable of hacking peoples accounts using I.P. addresses obtained from IRC, what is going stop him/her from doing it again? Nothing done by GOA so far or anything mentioned in this thread addresses the most worrying aspect.

You can't hack someone just based on his IP. You need to know some serious security hole in the machine before you can hack into it. Or if the guy doesn't suspect anything, send him some 'fun proggie' which has a trojan virus in it. Or just get lucky and the comp already has a trojan in it.

Basically if you keep your OS up to date and run a virus scanner, you're pretty safe. If you run a firewall you're even more safe.

If you have their IP adress, you can simply portscan them.

Basically, find an open port, and you're in.

Doesn't take rocketscience to do with all this 1337 script kidie software floating about on the net.

best thing to do is get a firewall, physical is best, but a software one like like zonealarm will do fine against most scipt kiddies

I also reccomend using Ad Aware, as it finds trojans pretty reliably

Sarnat many people aren't experts when it comes to networking and TCP/IP. A default network install of Windows leaves file and print sharing open to the outside world, also Windows itself leaves a boatload of ports open that can be exploited by a decent hacker. Not everyone has a firewall or understands how to use, with enough effort you could port scan everyone who is sat idle on an irc channel until you find an open port. Layl has proved it isn't impossible, this should serve as a warning to all. The problem still remains that alot of people still don't have firewall protection to plug the holes that Windows leaves open.

No need for mass paranoia. You cannot hack someone's PC, simply by knowing their IP address. Only experienced and determined hackers would try. If all you needed was their IP address, you woudn't find them so easily in IRC and it wouldn't be attached to every email you send.

The average script-kiddie will scan all ports on a PC. Most PCs have these under control, unless File/Printer sharing is active or some other secutity hole. Most likely Kron sent Brannor a file named: laylNudez.jpg.zip.exe - Brannor executes the file and runs the trojan.

So having someone know your IP address isn't an issue. Monitoring what you download and execute, is.
