Top 5 Vocalists

I realise that this may of been done before, but I love music, and I am interested in who you guys believe are the best all time vocalists, music threads always seem to stir up peoples emotions so I hope I haven't pissed anyone off. Here are mine-

(1)Jeff Buckley - I got into his music after he had died, an absolutely awesome voice which takes some getting used to, I miss the cd's he should of made, he is to this day the only singer that has had me close to tears.

(2)Eddie Vedder - I've loved Pearl Jam from the start, and I still do, they are my all time favourite band and Eddie's voice cover's every occassion.

(3)Jasper Steverlinck - He is the singer with Arid, they are a Belgian band who are overlooked by the rest of the world, now they aren't some strange, obscure, french language band, give them a listen and you will see what I mean about Jasper's voice.

(4)Marvin Gaye - I need say nothing more.

(5)Maynard James Keenan - Tool's frontman, amazing singer and totally bonkers.

Keenan is good, but massively overrated. Just like Tool are. The man is not an inspired genius like so many people claim, get over it. :)

Buckley I'd agree with,

Stipe is fantastic as well,

I Love Morriseys voice, but it's one of those you either love or hate.

Chino from Deftones voice is amazing live, and although I'm not a fan of their music, I really like Jonathon Davies of Korn's voice.

Morrisey was/is indeed great. The Smiths are the best band I never liked, if you see what I mean.
Or in other words, I didnt like em then, but I do now :)

I stopped liking Morrisey after Dagenham Dave which is still one of the worst songs I've ever heard

Oh man, Linkin Park?

crawling in my skin
these wounds they will not heal
fear is how i fall
confusing what is real

there's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface
consuming/confusing
this lack of self-control i fear is never ending
controlling/i can't seem

to find myself again
my walls are closing in
(without a sense of confidence and i'm convinced that there's just too much pressure to take)
i've felt this way before
so insecure

In the words of The Doors; fucking good lyrics man

I no particular order:

E (of the Eels has a very good voice. He conveys the dark humour of his songs very very well.

Tom McRae - Self titled album is stunningly good and he has a haunting voice.

Liam Gallagher - Sorry, had to put him in. He either sings awfully or in the most perfect rock way. It's 50/50 on the night whether he manages it or not.

Ben Ottewell - 'main' singer in Gomez. Huge booming blusey voice. Must drink pints of grit before gigs. In a very good way.

Patti Smith - My Dad's generation, but he plays her music a lot and she has a fantastic voice.

Extra mention to Gruff from the Super Furry Animals. Good voice, great tunes, fantastic lyrics:
"We'll go to miami,
and have a big party,
bring old friends and family,
or does Will Smith lie?
Does he ever break down and cry?"

Genius or bonkers, its hard to tell with Maynard, I don't feel they are overrated, Aenima kinda just slipped out and then it's following grew, I have to agree with you if you are talking about the new cd, I still can't get into it, yet all the critics raved about it, just can't find anything apart from his voice that I like about it. At least with Aenima you had something to grasp onto to take you through the hard to listen to bits. Ah well horses for courses.

There's no question about whether or not he's "genius" or "bonkers" - he's neither. A man with a decent voice, and somehow blagging his way through life with "deep" lyrics and tracks that most sixth formers can write.

I'm afraid in a corny way I agree with Trems top two.

Jeff Buckley- It makes me sad to know what we missed out on.
Eddie Vedder-He's a God
Brandon Boyd- Saw Incubus earlier this year. He was great, pitch perfect without sounding like a recording.
It is really hard seperating vocalists from bands or songs and listing them.
Adam Duritz-He's soulful.
Nina Simone-You can't beat a bit of blues.

Now I'm tired after taxing my little brain but Skyler if all those already mentioned are no good then who do you think make the grade?
