Frankly when it comes to shit like this, I'm all for police led sting operations (fuck those vigilantes) where they get these people and then possibly offer them help without completely fucking over their lives, also they'll be on the radar of the police forever so it's not like the extended prison sentences are actually going to be beneficial for anybody.

Like any repeat offender, if somebody goes on to commit crime then the probation system and the police should take some responsibility for it.

It seems that prison sentences across the board are increasing and I really don't see how the benefits outweigh the cost.

Unless youre a Tory mate and you run private prisons ofc, US system here we come!

I'm also not sure how you can rehabilitate paedophiles, like any sexual urge, you can't stop it with talking, you have to start going down the conversion therapy route...which is very dodgy ground.

But you can't ever really prove intent. Not really. You can make considered judgement but that's it.

Which is why I'm uneasy about putting "intent to commit a crime" on level footing with "actually did it".

You can change your mind, even if you actually intend to do a thing. Right up until the last second.
