It's interesting that Italy had the lowest number, considering the seat of the Catholic church is there.

@Job - plumber advice! (As you're all gas-safe registered and the likes). :)

They're tearing up the road outside our houses (1920's council houses) to replace the gas mains. They've said they're going to disconnect all our meters, fit new gas piping around the houses (on the outside - not buried or anything) and then drill in through the walls to connect directly (in our case) to the old back-boiler. (Personally, I don't think that'll work - the current gas meter is in the centre of the house under the stairs - pipes come through the solid cement floor - and go off into the kitchen, where I presume they split and one goes to the cooker, another off to the boiler (is that a thing?)).

Either way - they've not given us the notice that they should have (letter last week, knock on the house today saying they're doing it Wednesday and we can either be connected to the new main or not (!)).

I've no problem with them digging up the street, replacing the mains, doing whatever work is necessary - even if it's shit that it's at such late notice. But I want the job done properly, and want to understand what their legal requirements are (they were *very* vague and couldn't really answer - and it feels like a fit-up job because their claimed notice period never happened)).

Advice?


Edit: It would be totally fair for you to make a jibe along the lines of "been taking the piss out of me being a plumber but when you want free advice...." ;)

I presume they are putting new meter cupboards outside fed by yellow UG plastic gas pipe...nothing wrong with external pipes...they are actually safer, just make sure they sleeve the drilled hole and seal it inside.
I would ask that its done neatly, guys in a hurry will just bang it in where its convenient for them.
Clips every 2m horizontal, the size of the pipe should be enough for an allowed pressure drop under load...they will probably just oversize to be sure.
Back boilers are usually low power and dont need much gas anyway.
It will be done in copper..22mm and maybe some 15mm.
It doesnt need gas stickers by law, though they may do it.
It also HAS to have a house electrics earth wire to the pipe just by the meter >300mm and before any tees.
If they get arsey about any demands, just say you are contacting gassafe.

I dont understand the choice part..if the old pipe is ok..why upgrade?

Yeah, new meter cupboards outside.

It's the routing inside that worries me tbh. I suspect their suggestion gets my boiler done but totally ignores the kitchen.

I'm sure it's safe, it'd just look naff. If there's a choice of keeping the old, why can't they just replace the mains pipe under the street and plumb the existing connections to the houses into it?
