How did Santander know the bike existed if it was bought new with cash?

They'd have been the ones showing unpaid finance.

I think @Job's over-egging the "guilty by database" thing here, since all it took was a phone call and Santander went "Ohh, sorry, that's a mistake, I'll fix it", not "fuck off, give us money 'cause the computer says so"...

Yes but why was Sandtander involved if they paid cash for the bike? You would only involve them if you got finance for the purchase

Oh I get it now. Duh.

So, he didn't pay cash. He got finance from Santander.

No...it had nothing to do with them, they had flagged the reg up by mistake on their database that the HP checking company used.

And to add to the insult he had to pay a tenner to find out which finance company incorrectly had it up as outstanding finance.
They hadnt chased it up because it was on some database that wasnt tied to a process to start going after the money, it was in limbo waiting for HP checkers to find.

Tbh mate was a bit suspicious it wasnt just some internal scam to get you to pay the ten quid.

Even at dealership level if they prepped bike for finance it seems odd they wouldnt have scrapped it

I'm not reading this that way at all. Isn't this just a mis-keyed reg? Please correct me if I'm wrong @Job - I assume this was actually HP against a completely different vehicle? Which is also why they could identify the error quickly.

They said the reg had never been financed or attempted finance, it was simply on a database of reg's with outstanding finance that hp checkers look at, somehow it was on there without any trail back to anything.

Its hardly a major issue, except if that guy did have my mates actual address, he could have turned up with a crew or something....simply off the back of a false data entry and you look as guilty as fuck, like you were trying to have him off for thousands.
All because computer says no.
Imagine if santander had said.
'Hmmm, looks a bit odd, we'll get back to you, meanwhile guys got my mate in a headlock.

Its potentially very disturbing and thete is no obvious trail to conclusion, sensitive financial information in the hands of ordinary citizens for a few quid online check and no..have you been accused of theft because our info is incorrect?

Actually my mate not in a good place anyway , his daughter has gone batshit, his marriage is bad and this really shook him up, some dodgy guy screaming at him down the phone, when hes done nothing wrong..it fucking stinks.

The GDPR rules would surely apply to that and his info should have been removed as they have no need to hold it.

Yeah well thats a bit late innit.

I know you think Im crackers, but its all part of the problem.
People assume databases are correct once its an automated check.
The fuckin police do it and now online check go straight to guilty because there is no independent verification or context of its likely accuracy.
Says here you're a ...insert type of public menace.... and we've found out while we've got you down an alleyway.

It's about the quality of the steps, not just the quantity.

i.e. if you got slightly out of breath doing them in minimum 20 min efforts they count.

And no eating pies because you wobble on your feet a bit ;)

It boils my piss when you see Mermaids training police officers for 3 days on the 'gender spectrum' which they illustrate with a chart showing pink and barbie at one end and blue and action man at the other.

Sexist stereotypes. Like women with short hair should really be men. Utter tripe.

Or they can just have mixed sex bathrooms, like you occasionally get.

Not like women will be bothered - judging by the number of 'em who walk drunk into male toilets in nightclubs to inspect the line of cocks at the urinals.

I don't understand why they get upset if you then piss on them. I mean, how much control do you have over your cock when you're battered?! :)
