I wasn't talking about crypto in general; crypto in general is great. But buying a future in a coin that's the product of a contentious hard fork that hasn't even happened yet is stoopid. Because that contentious hard fork is now not going to happen, leaving all those who did buy the future high and dry.

Even when something like that happened, it barely had an impact on the price. I think it might've dropped about $10 and then recovered. And anyway, that wasn't a problem with Ethereum, it was down to someone writing some dodgy code in a wallet application (basically).

Cryptocurrencies (and more specifically blockchain applications) are here to stay, it's just not yet clear in what form they are here to stay.

But, in where is the value? What is being 'mined'? Are you solving algorithms? What is it, more specifically? I've never really gotten it.

The value is in a number of things, the blockchain itself has huge value but in terms of a currency - what gives our money "value" other than that we're willing to trade it.

Most people don't understand how our current standard currencies work and the huge levels of bullshit that goes with them. 85% percent of UK MP's don't understand that money is created out of thin air when a bank gives you a loan for something. Loads of people think bitcoin's better than our money...

I have a lot of fine butchers where i live now. In my town in berkshire there were zero.

And where u buy your meat from has nothing to do with contaminating it with green things ;)

Yes, money is "created out of thin air", but it is also destroyed just in smaller bits at a more steady pace.

When the bank loans you money, you go and invest them. In a new house, your business or something else. So now that money is converted into something tangible. When you start paying that money back, the bank then destroys already existing money to make up for it. Otherwise you would have what is known as Zimbabwe Inflation Rates.

If Bitcoins were to take over the money system as we know it today, good luck ever getting a decent interest rate on your loans. With the limited amounts of Bitcoins everyone will be trying their absolute best to keep on to a many of them as possible, just in case something goes south. It'll be much more difficult to obtain a loan in the first place a well.

No looking up. A celebration of knowledge:

(1) For 2 points, which company owns Maltesers?

(2) For 3 points, what is the name of the chemical compound OsO₄?

(3) For 4 points, which artist is frequently credited with painting The Embarkation of St Ursula?

(4) For 5 points, what is the predominant religion of Cameroon?

What a weird set of questions, 1. Is Mars, 4. Is Christian. Dunno the others.

Is that a typo because Os isn't a valid chemical symbol so as it stands that question is meaningless?

Er, Os is the chemical symbol for Osmium. O4 is Tetroxide, but I don't know what Osmium-Tetroxide is so I couldn't answer the question.

To be expected tbh. Nice that I've made a bit. Can lose a bit as well. Swings and roundabouts.

I'm in it for the long haul though. I'll keep hold of my various currencies, see what it's like in a few years time. May up my exposure to different crypto tho - got a whole bitcoin and a bit (couple of grand profit on that so far), got some ZEC, ZEN, Ripple, OMG, some Litecoin I found I mined in 2014...

These stories are interesting tho:

EU in 5 million euro blockchain for social good compo
14 insurance companies sign up to trial blockchain platform

:)
