...automation is "a threat in the hands of the greedy, but it's a huge opportunity if it's managed in the interests of society as a whole. We won't reap the full rewards of these great technological advances if they're monopolised to pile up profits for a few.
But if they're publicly managed - to share the benefits - they can be the gateway for a new settlement between work and leisure. A springboard for expanded creativity and culture."
Have to say - I'm right behind Corbyn, 100%, on this:
If the productivity gains (and therefore massive profit increases) aren't horded by shareholders, but evenly spread, the chances of a radically reduced working week are massively increased.
If we use it to slash workforce and costs alone that means productivity gains go to shareholders and jobs disappear. I'd like to see the working week slashed to 3 days. If companies want 5 or 6 day a week cover they should hire another bod. In theory, with automation, profits could remain flat (but still = profits) but everyone else would reap the benefits in free time.
After all, we're not put on this world to work like slaves for the profits of a few. There's no reason why a future world can't be legally structured in a way to free us from our time constraints.
