Well as you kept wittering on about brewing techniques passed down the ages and looking down your nose in that oh-so-condescending manner you have down to a tee, yes, I'd say that is what you're saying. I mean I get that you put in token "drink what you like" comments to appear as slightly less of a cunt, doesn't change the ridiculously snobby and pretentious attitude to beer. I'm more than happy for people to drink what they want, if you want to drink Fosters go ahead, similarly if you want to drink some dishwater flavoured brown liquid with moss and leaves in it go right ahead. However if you start bleating on about how a drink is made, rather than how it tastes, I'm going to think you're a pretentious twat, and would normally suggest that the wine aisle is that way.

Loving the mention of Shepherd and Neame earlier, they do some fine beer as well. Not much for Bishop's Finger, however Spitfire is lush. Bloody loopy juice as well if you have 3 or 4.....

Jury's still out for me on Guiness as well, I've tried it in Dublin, and it was nice-ish, didn't taste a huge amount different to the stuff in the UK though. Mind, this was in a hotel and I've never been big on stout, tastes too close to cold coffee for me and is too flat. I like a nice gassy beer, primarily lager (big fan of Freedom lager, even though it's CAMRA "approved"). The beer down here is all wrong anyway - doesn't have a shilling rating God I'd kill for a pint of Caledonian 80 right now.....

Its mostly in the head that it tastes better in Ireland. It doesn't of course. It tastes excellent in a decent pub anywhere if they look after their equipment properly.

And yeah, draft from a tap over bottled stuff. Different drinks though.

It is after all a mass produced stout, it is supposed to taste the same everywhere if the equipment is well looked after.

I prefer some smaller companies stouts myself, usually bottle conditioned. Frog Island do a really nice one.

Guiness in Dubai is straight from Ireland not the same shite they brew in UK. It's flown in on Emirates from Dublin left to settle for 3-4 weeks before use.

I don't like beer at all... not even a little bit.
I have found one kind of beer that's an apple blend, i can never remember it's name and they only have it on one chain of pubs in Sweden (The Bishops Arms). I prefer a mixed drink like Gin and Ginger Ale, or Jack Daniels and Coke. Gin of choice is Bombay Sapphire or when i want to indulge a Tanqueray no. 10 with just one ice cube.

Ginger ale goes with anything really, rum, whisk(e)y, bourbon especially. JDC is a classic and i like it as well.

I much prefer those to beer, but when i do drink beer i usually drink whatever. Not really a snob when it comes to alcohol, except i don't touch moonshine and other clear booze-booze. Just doesn't go down well.

It really isn't. The problem, as explained to me by a friend's Dad who works as a "quality ambassador" or somesuch for Diageo, is that in the UK and elsewhere not enough Guinness is drunk to ensure there's a constant flow of beer through the taps, because even the best barman will only flush through pipes every day or two. In Ireland, because they simply drink so much of it, there's no time to build up residues that affect the taste. It also tends to mean you'll actually get a better pint of Guinness in a really busy pub in Dublin, than you would in some old converted crofter's shack out in the sticks.

Yes, but in the UK Guinness is a minority drink so even the busiest of "Irish" pubs in the UK will still be chucking out 10x the lager that they do Guinness. In Ireland, Stout would probably make up more 50-60% of any pub's beer sales.

Courage used to brew it under license in Reading, glad that has changed. Mate of mine used to be a quality inspector there, a chemist by profession.

Guinness here in Dubai is decent, still not as good as Dublin but better than I have had in UK.

Used to drink it in my 20's but hardly touch the stuff now. I much prefer many of the other excellent stouts available.

I really can't see the point of "guinness extra cold" either - all chilling does is reduce the flavour slightly (until it warms) - but if you don't like the flavour of guinness then why do you drink it in the first place?
