Two semi decent films on TV tonight according to reviews

The Grey ( 2011 starring Liam Neeson) - stranded oil riggers vs wolves in Alaskan wilderness

Cross of Iron (1977, dir Sam Peckinpah) - WW2 Eastern Front drama

Anyone seen them?

Cross of Iron is a great film for its time. You kind of have to ignore the cheapass 70s production values though.

I managed to sit through an entire French film yesterday without hurling my shoes at the screen. I actually quite enjoyed it. Some action film called "Special Forces" had a couple of Hollywood types in and wasn't your usual French nonsense about staring into a darkened room or some such.

There are lots of great French films. Its usually where Hollywood steals its better ideas from. (The original Nikita is still the best one for example).

REad RAvens comment and was just about to say the same :p

Leon is great too if i recall correctly. Hell, most of Luc Besson stuff is, though how "french" it's categorised is a different matter.

Leon isn't in French though. Not seen the new Nikita, saw the French one though, was OK...

True but the problem with a lot of Besson's films, even the ones he doesn't direct but only writes, is that they are just rehashed versions of Nikita under a different name. How many hot-chick-with-gun films can one guy make? :)

Leon is by far his best film but even that is just an offshoot of Nikita as he liked Jean Reno's character so much.

Watch:
A Prophet
Mesrine (Parts 1 & 2)
La Haine
The Battle of Algiers
Micmacs
Alphaville
District B13
Days of Glory
Les visiteurs
Taxi

Nothing arty, all really watchable. La Haine and The Battle of Algiers should be in most people's top 100 list irrespective.

I remember watching The Chorus at school repetitively, but was good film :)

There's also a new french film about a black guy and a rich disabled dude, forgot what it's called though, that was good :)

I though that had to be bullshit and while failing to prove you wrong I found this.

It is worth noting that an additional 8812 bullets were employed in the handling of "dangerous, sick, or injured animals" (down 5% from 2010's 9336), but most of those situations involved "freeing animals from their suffering" following a traffic accident.

They hate animals.

Awesome but I doubt the drone operators give a shit tbh, its just a game to the redneck operating it.
Look up the suicide rates of drone operators and you will find that is not always the case. Unlike fighter or bomber pilots it seems more drone pilots can't live with their actions when they find out what pushing that button meant.

Shifting the blame of War to soldiers is pretty sad, especially when they have no choice..

They do.

do you think its as easy as just not signing up?

Yes. Yes I do - and because we lack conscription in this country THEY DID SIGN UP. VOLUNTARILY.

And they knew beforehand that that would mean killing people they were told to kill.

Mmm no, my point is if every soldier turned around tomorrow and quit and or there were a shortage of soldiers during a time of need (whatever the need) you'd get a little letter through the door saying you've been conscripted (assuming you were healthy and weren't part of an essential service/job). Although it hasn't been seen for a very long time in the UK the fact of the matter is it will never go away, it'll always be there lingering for a time of need.

To put it more simply: there will always be an army because of the drafting process, whether you like it or not. No one is asking you to agree with their actions but don't sit there going "They have a choice honest!" like some brain washed hippie.

Also, you're about a day late for this discussion, you should have someone fix your potential argument detector.
