You legislate on welfare issues like this. Education won't trump religion in this way. They've had "education" in the west on Halal meat for as long as we've had animal welfare laws and they've had their religious exemption - and it's done fuck all.

The problem is that slaughtered meat is finding its way into mainstream supply chains on a regular basis without any labelling...that is a far bigger scandal than horsemeat and is allowed because they dont want to upset a huge cult.

No, it seems like it is just something that can already be done but is having 19 billion thrown at it.

For one thing it uses t'inter rather than traditional mobile infrastructure. You can send video/audio/text messages and it's usable from a desktop, a wifi-only tablet or whatever. So no, you can't do it with normal SMS/MMS. Email yes, but this is instant messaging, not email.

It's much bigger than I thought it was (apparently their one-day record is 27 billion messages processed) but $19bn is hella pricey.

For me whatsapp is great because it allows me to keep in close contact with mates from back home on a daily basis. I don't really feel out of the loop (as I did when I first moved across the pond) with my old friend group because we have a group of about 12 of us all chatting from Boston/ Toronto/ London/ Dublin/ Galway/ Sydney.
