Banning animal cruelty for purely religious purposes?

Yep.
And because something is banned or against the law it vanishes from the face of the earth? I think not. Imo this move will just piss a lot of people off and cause yet another us/them schism in society that we really could do without. I fee lthis could have been done a lot more subltly so I'm calling it 8/10 for ideology and 2/10 for implementation.

I couldn't disagree more.

As a society we've decided that animal cruelty is a bad thing. So many years ago we implemented laws to bring their welfare standards up. They weren't particularly popular at the time - most humans didn't really give a shit. We were also sensitive to those with the most entrenched views - those of a religious disposition - so they had an exemption from the laws.

Decades later almost all humans (certainly in well-educated Europe) are on board with animal cruelty being a bad thing. Society has a more nuanced understanding and the majority of people are on the animal welfare train, rather than not giving a shit.

Now is the time to remove the religious exemptions - as it has the support of the majority and the actual argument for religious exemption can be seen to be weak. The religious exemption has always been ethically incorrect - animal cruelty is animal cruelty - the fact that it's in the name of <insert your god here> is not a good reason to keep up cruel practice.

So, slowly, the religious exemptions that have enabled cruel and inhumane slaughtering practices by religious sects are being removed. This is after years of them enjoying protection from laws the rest of society have to abide by - simply because they think that some non-existent god wants things that way. They've had time to see this coming too - the debate has been raging for a long time. So it's no surprise to them.

This is a decades-long, religiously sensitive, ethically correct plan being implemented in the most sensitive fashion. The removal of legal protections for animal cruelty on a religious basis had to happen sometime.

Now is that time.

Now you see that's a better way of putting it then "ban because of religion" ;)

Shame that the next step most likely will be to remove meat eating.

That depends how far you want to take animal cruelty. Some people think killing a healthy animal even in the most humane of ways just so humans can eat is cruel. As is breeding animals in appealing conditions just so we can kill them nicely and eat them.

Yep, because tell me where that bacon you ate this morning was from, and how it was treated in it's life, oh, and that chicken last night, oh and the beef from the other week...

Banning animal cruelty for purely religious purposes?

Yep.

Scouse in a ignorance shocker :D

Halal is purely cultural, it's NOT religious, it's just adopted because of quite legitimate reasons, many thousands of moons ago, thousands of people were dying because they were eating meat that went off, so the local G decided to pass a law saying that you had to kill and eat it on the same day, and to make it easier, he said that Mohammed told him this.

Halal meat is 'usually' sourced from a better source from where we get our meat, and in return it's usually more expensive because of this. (There's a shed loads of Halal butchers in Leicester.)

At the same time though, I know numeral Muslims that eat any meat, Halal or not, because they're not ignorant of their religion.

Education not suppression.

Kosher, I'd imagine is a similar story, since it's also a hot area.

There is also a shed load of bad Halal places who use it as an excuse to be scumbags. I imagine they are getting compared to Hitler right about now if they are stamping out barbaric kosher nonsense too.

No it wouldn't be.

In the long run, Toht is probably right. Ignoring the rights and wrongs of Halal and Kosher, what happens once you throw a particular group under the bus, is that the zealots move on to the next target (you only have to look at the focus on alcohol now smoking has been legislated into a corner). The problem is that Halal butchery differs from regular butchery in degree not kind, so once you say, Halal=bad, you're on shaky ground when they come for your bacon sarnies. And of course they're pushing the environmental angle as well.

we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our bacon, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender
