They took their licenses, they didn't take the cars. As far as I know les flics have the power to impose a massive fine (750 € for the first offense I think), take the driver's license or take the car as they were over 50km/h over the limit. There are *many* stories of people being left outside their locked cars by the roadside with no keys or licenses. The police are more lenient towards single wimmins and groups with children apparently but otherwise, you can be royally shafted if you're caught going over 50km/h over the limit. A *lot* of speeding offences over here (I saw 50% somewhere) are from smelly foreigners using France as a portal to get to Germany/Italy/Spain/wherever and the police have really been trying to clamp down on it.
A (little known) new bill was passed in May that lets them find your UK address from your number plate if you're caught on a speed camera, they can now send you a fine in England.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the police over here have seen (or heard of) the Top Gear folks blitzing through France in their previous challenges/races and were quietly delighted at the opportunity to fuck them over a bit.
Edit for linkage:
So if you're left by the side of the motorway with your car but no licence or keys, what are you supposed to do? Seems like a fairly stupid and unsafe thing for the cops to do.
As for the points on your UK licence, I was under the impression that had been the case for ages. One of the reasons I kept my UK licence for so long in Ireland was that it was one of the only EU countries that didn't have the systems in place to do cross-border points, although it worked the other way around (if I got caught speeding with an Irish licence in the UK I'd get the points).
