Sounds like a great movieJust got back from seeing American Hustle, it was brilliant. They made a right boob with the title though, should definitely have been called 'Amy Adams and her brilliant cleavage for 138 minutes'.

Diddums. Don't do 140km/h in a 90 zone, then.“If you are going to break the speed limit, make sure you are not in France. You would be advised to pay attention to what happened next. Because the on-the-spot fine was everything we had in our wallets. We were left penniless. And they took away our driving licences. No court case. No arguing. Nothing.”

They took their licenses, they didn't take the cars. As far as I know les flics have the power to impose a massive fine (750 € for the first offense I think), take the driver's license or take the car as they were over 50km/h over the limit. There are *many* stories of people being left outside their locked cars by the roadside with no keys or licenses. The police are more lenient towards single wimmins and groups with children apparently but otherwise, you can be royally shafted if you're caught going over 50km/h over the limit. A *lot* of speeding offences over here (I saw 50% somewhere) are from smelly foreigners using France as a portal to get to Germany/Italy/Spain/wherever and the police have really been trying to clamp down on it.The only problem with that is that the French cops didn't obey their own rules. The took the cars because it was being filmed, a normal punter wouldn't be left by the side of the road.
Confiscation of vehicles
In some cases, instead of, or in addition to, a fine or prison sentence, the vehicle can be confiscated. The main offences for which it can be applied are:
In such a case, the vehicle becomes the property of the French government.
- exceeding the speed limit by over 40 km/h
- repeated offence of driving under the influence of alcohol (0.40 mg per litre of breath)
- hit and run
- refusal to stop when requested
- driving without licence
- driving a vehicle with a licence of a category which does not cover that vehicle
- driving without insurance
