So what you are saying is that everyone is a hipster, and no other classes of people exist.
No, what I mean is that they like do things that are 'abnormal' but so many people do the abnormal thing, that it becomes normal, IE wearing silly jumpers.

Ubuntu Edge failed

Too expensive

Not worth risk

Kickstarter for Ubantu phone go boom
We're not talking about hardware. They did have a rather distastrous indiegogo funding campaign (I think they asked for $32m and got pledged about $10m) but Job was asking about alternative OS solutions.

Whether the OS only will take off, who knows...its basically just a reskinned android OS, same drivers, same driver problems...less apps.
It's not a reskinned android OS at all; it's Ubuntu on a phone. You can install any Ubuntu app on it (of which there are thousands). It will take a while for phone-app developers to catch on (assuming they want to) but that's the same with any emerging platform.

The clever bit with the Ubuntu solution will be that you can dock the phone with a monitor, kb and mouse and have a full Ubuntu Desktop OS powered entirely by the phone. You will also be able to run native android apps in said OS.

It is not really that simple though. There maybe thousands of desktop apps but that dose not mean that even 20 of then are scalable to a phone screen and touch optimised. It is a interesting idea and I hope it works but I do have doubts. An application that scales itself to a phone screen with big giant buttons but then changes back to a desktop version when docked would be very cool.

Yeah the Ubuntu apps will be more useful with the Desktop OS once docked but Canonical are putting a lot of effort into this so I bet they will work with the devs to make as many of the popular apps small-screen and touch friendly as possible. Using the same apps (as in the same exact install of an app) across phone/tablet and desktop would be massive for productivity and synchronisation and all that jazz.

Said pub is The Crusader though... It's one of the worst pubs, ever.

That's pretty poor really - inappropriate and un-professional - is he a functioning alcoholic?

He's a pretty cool guy tbf, it's the last seminar of term, and he said he's been asked to do a quiz, and thought it'd be more fitting to do it in a pub.

Not sure whether I should go yet. :p

It's only a tutorial module, where you go in and moan or ask for stuff, guess he's trying to break down barriers.

and I think the Uni would've picked up on it if he was.

They usually tolerate quite a lot from lecturers - there was a well known serial predator at the Mrs Uni - he'd been at it for years and the Uni just ignored it.

I had an alcoholic lecturer who brought a Samurai sword into a law lecture and ended up in prison for an un-related matter and he was head of the law faculty.

Rubbish. I used to have a fair few lectures in the pub. Better than a stuffy classroom.

They'd often go on a lot longer than usual and the conversations would be on-topic. Learned a lot more that way because it was a much more intellectually challenging and unorthodox envrironment.

It's just Canonicals attempt to be Microsoft. At least M$ have managed to get the same UI across all devices (liked or loathed), everyone else is just playing catch-up. Ubuntu for Phones looks like it's been well thought through but there is nothing in the UI that couldn't be stolen by the other platforms well before it will ever arrive in a usable form.

I would be right on the phone to the mail about lectures in pubs. I hope he has done a risk assessment!

I see - what were you studying? Psychology, sociology or media studies?

BSc (Hons) Environmental Management & Technology. 28 hours min lectures/week. About 40% civil engineering, 40% Envi. Sci., 20% other.

University (at least at the time) was about freeing minds and encouraging argument and dissenting opinion. It's not about fucking classroom-led authoritarian orthodoxy and rote-recall.

I'd much rather people wore stuff like that than say this:

No, fuck off, you're not a nerd. Until you've ditched your girlfriend for a WoW raid, you're not fit to wear this jumper. And if you have done that, you wouldn't wear this shit anyway.
