Prisoner votes - can anyone give a reasoned explanation of why we dont let them vote currently?

Is it just a punishment ? But then who suffers - the individual or our democracy?

I don't really see that they are a big enough section of society to really change much and hell - we let women vote :p

Prisoners vote in Finland(and other countries, like Israel i think(might be wrong)) and it works fine. You could basically let any voting system be in place until A: 100% vote and it matters that much and B: if people could affect more by voting(outside putting people in charge of stuff and -hope- they do as they say).

Because they are excluded from society as part of their punishment.

Not that most of them would vote anyway.

Although those on a short term should be allowed imo.

Define short? Non lifers perhaps?

Personally I dont see the harm of them being allowed to vote if they like - we are trying to rehabilitate them to be able to re-enter society after all?

Do you think these prisoners suddenly one day decide they need to vote...no they get approached by bottom feeder lawyers looking to fuck us all over for business.

The murderer apparently did - I don't think anyone could claim compo though as it's not a breach to ban prisoners as long as they get rid of the blanket ban. They are going to have to let some prisoners vote eventually.

The govt should just be sensible and start by letting everyone serving 6 months or less vote but apparently Cameron doesnt want to let prisoners vote on his watch because he thinks it will be politically unpopular - frankly I think most people dont really care and have bigger issues.

Bought one for my mum. £5 for a notepad but worth it if it puts a smile on her face!
