My piano teacher has got me playing Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto tonight .

It's probably the most physically demanding and almost certainly the most technically challenging piano concerto on the concert repertoire. And she's got me playing it. Crikey!

One concert pianist who has been playing professionally for 30 years is only now about to attempt it !:cry:

How much per lesson? How often on lessons?

£30/hour. Which I think is very cheap considering her expertise & experience.
One lesson a week
She's fully booked. I was lucky to get her. She's a Russian concert pianist, and Russian tuition is the best in the world.

If you''re musical and want to learn piano, get a Russian teacher.

That's not bad at all that.

How long you been at it? How much practice a day? My problem was always that I never bothered putting the required practice in :(

Been playing 32 years. Started when I was in single digits, passed Grade 8 age 14, been playing ever since, but not had proper lessons for years. February 2013 will mark a year of lessons with the Russian. In my teens I was practising 4-6 hours a day. Nowadays all I get time for is 1.5 - 2 hours on weekdays. I try to set aside 4 hours each on Saturday & Sunday. I try to have 1-2 days off a week to rest the hands.

I'd love to have a wander round the MI6 building in Vauxhall.

Can you imagine the security there?
On one hand I like to think its all high-tech, sliding doors, sound-proof rooms, biometric fingerprint door entry systems, state of the art computers, rooms full of screens and buttons. But part of me thinks its cosmetic. Bomb-proof & barbed wire on the outside, but inside probably a tatty cobwebby paint-peeling boxes of files everywhere 60's style omnishambles of an office.

Somehow I don't think banging on the door shouting "Uh, pizza delivery for I.C. Weener?" will work :(. There's no other option. We're going to have to train as spies. 00-Lamp. Licence to Eat Pigs in Blankets. Not very catchy. Meh

you forget "chinese wall" offices, one way doors and other such hobgobbery. We have that at BigCompany, and tbh it's very annoying :-/

also, the entire MI6 building is probably empty, except for two seemingly sweet little old ladies drinking tea together with a man that looks a little like this:

That's the sort of commitment I could have given as a kid with the right encouragement but I simply can't do anything like that now.

Best I'm putting in is about twenty minutes to half an hour a day with my guitar and only been doing that for a few months.

I guess I'm destined to never play anything well :(

Edit: Please to be posting a video of your amazing hands in action, please oh Lampster!

20mins is better than nothing. Why don't you see about getting a 30 minute guitar lesson once a week? You'll be amazed how a good teacher can transform you. And if you have a real passion for the guitar, the lessons will give you achievable goals and will help motivate you. I reckon you could probably find a teacher on Google near you in minutes.

I'm with Lamp on this (though I can't play an instrument to save my life). I have a mate who's a fairly decent guitar player, and he maintains that he only ever got really decent once he had a teacher to push him.

My biggest regret is that I gave up violin. I wish I'd properly learnt it. Too late for me now! :(

I like the idea of lessons but if I'm honest I don't think I've got passion for anything anymore. Not real passion.

I'm kinda dead inside atm :(

a friend of mine worked in the security company that installed cameras + stuff in the elevators, apparently none of the elevator buttons have any numbers on it so you have to know which one to press to get to the floor you need o_O
