(Edit: I've never liked putting "an" before words starting with "h". You wouldn't say "an history teacher" would you?)

It should depend on the sound Lamp.

"an" only exists as it's far easier to start a new word with a vowel if the previous word ended on a consanent. For example: "a elephant" is harder to say than "an elephant".

So, use an for h if the h sound is silent, but not otherwise: "a hospital" ; "an honour"
