Android tablets are pretty terrible, am not anfan of Apple for most things but damn the ipads last forever, have one from 2010ish and it only now has stopped getting OS updates, a decade of support for old hardware isnt bad.

Samsung are awful, every time ive had to work with them its been a nightmare

I got the new Samsung S20 a few months back and found they had removed the headphone jack, swore a bit and bought an adapter off Amazon. Then noticed the (very decent) earphones that come with the phone are USB rather than phono!

All phone/tablet makers are pretty shady, Apple being especially proficient at it.

iPads are the way to go for tablets imo. In general I think Apple products are overpriced shite, bit never had an android tablet come close to an iPad.

iPads are a better user experience for general browsing and app use, but they're still locked down and don't play nice if you're in Windows ecosystem. I have an iPad Pro and basically use it for Zoom calls.

My kids both have cheap Android tabs (Lenovos from memory), because, a. they're cheap if they break them, and b. they're actually more useful; my son is mad into retro games and he can run emulators and ROMs of old console games on an android tab, but there's no way on an iPad, and once again, if he fucks anything up, cheap. The main problem with Android tabs is that Google don't really give a shit so Android updates aren't really accommodating tabs (most on sale are back at Android 8) and all the serious players have left the market, except Samsung.

Yep, agreed that how locked down they are is a massive pain, but user experience is just a million times better than android. I can take the locked down-ness on a tablet, as I only really use them for watching stuff, maybe playing the odd game, but android all the way for phones.

I've got a Samsung Tab S3 through work, and even though it's a couple of years old now it does the job pretty well. Not as many tablet specific apps as on Apple, but for emails and other work stuff on the move it's pretty good. Still runs fast despite our IT Department's best attempt to gimp it with Android Work Profiles. I;d probably replace it with a Chromebook now tbh, seeing as they seem to run Android apps as well.

Still unsurprisingly on an Xperia for both phones - they took the headphone socket away on my Xperia 1, but it's back on the Xperia 1 ii which is handy.

If retailers wanted to stop scalpers they could do it easily. We address-capped PS2 pre-orders 20 years ago ffs. The truth is they don't give a shit and they especially don't give a shit this year, when they need all the sales volume in this FY they can get. They don't actually make much margin on the consoles anyway, so its just a cashflow exercise for them, and they're not even that fussed about repeat business (where they used to make their actual money) because Sony are essentially going direct and cutting them out.

Lenovo can be pretty good with the Android updates. My last Android tablet was a Lenovo and it got 2 major version bumps after the point they said it would never get anything else.

However, Android updates being what they are is why my most recent slate is actually a Lenovo IdeaPad Duet. Proper browser... check, Android stack so you get all the apps... check, Linux stack... check, Stand and keyboard without paying £lulz extra... check and software updates until 2028... check.

I think you should use the deathbed test when looking at purchases. If you're on your deathbed, would you really look back at a watch and go "that brought me a lot of joy".

Why does anyone collect anything? It's just part of human nature. Sure they are just expensive toys and completely non-essential but that pretty much defines the entire luxury market. Sometimes you just want to own something nice or to commemorate a special occasion. It doesn't have to be a watch but they are the one piece of 'jewellery' its accepted by everyone to be okay for a man to wear.
